The Gathering: A Novel | C. J. Tudor
28 posts | 29 read | 28 to read
A detective investigating a grisly crime in rural Alaska finds herself caught up in the dark secrets and superstitions of a small town in this riveting novel from the acclaimed author of The Chalk Man. Deadhart, Alaska. Population: 673. Living. In a small Alaskan town, a boy is found with his throat ripped out and all the blood drained from his body. The inhabitants of Deadhart havent seen a killing like this in twenty-five years. But they know whos responsible: a member of the Colony, an ostracized community of vampyrs living in an old mine settlement deep in the woods. Detective Barbara Atkins, a specialist in vampyr killings, is called in to officially determine if this is a Colony killing and authorize a cull. Old suspicions die hard in a down like Deadhart, but Barbara isnt so sure. Determined to find the truth, she enlists the help of a former Deadhart sheriff, Jenson Tucker, whose investigation into the previous murder almost cost him his life. Since then, Tucker has become a recluse. But he knows the Colony better than anyone. As the pair delve into the town's history, they uncover secrets darker than they could have imagined. And then another body is found. While the snow thickens and the nights grow longer, a killer stalks Deadhart, and two disparate communities circle one another for blood. Time is running out for Atkins and Tucker to find the truth: Are they hunting a bloodthirsty monster . . . or a twisted psychopath? And which is more dangerous?

In Deadheart AK a teen is killed by a vampyr shortly after the Colony returns, having been run out of the area 25 years ago when another boy was killed. The townspeople don't think it's coincidence & they're looking for revenge. But vampyrs are endangered and have been protected since the 80s.Our MC is a detective w the Forensic Vampyr Anthropology Department & has been sent to investigate & determine if a Cull should be authorized. The world-

bookandbedandtea biilding was interesting. Humans and vampyrs coexist uneasily, with vampyrs being denied education and the right to have jobs. This discrimination has led to tension on both sides & vampyrs have been hunted for sport & abused in horrible ways. The murder mystery and the multiple layers of personal, political, religious, and economic dealings between the two populations were good. I think this might be the first in a planned series. 2mo

The Gathering by C.J. Tudor is a horror and suspense-filled murder mystery with unusually high stakes.

C.J. Tudor has been one of my favorite authors since I first read The Chalk Man. Though I love them all, this book is officially my favorite of her works so far!

I picked up this one, my second book by this author. I read her debut called The Chalk Man, thought it was pretty good. This one, a USA where Vampyre‘s have been living among us but pushed to the outskirts of society and ostracized. An agent is sent to investigate a supposed killing by a Vampyr on a human, which is forbidden and if warranted could require the whole colony to be culled. Obviously, things aren‘t what they seem to be in Alaska. 4⭐️

Finished this one the other day. Set in Alaska with vampires. There is a death in the small Alaska town and basically the vampire FBI comes in to investigate.

Everyone knows about vampires but they can‘t work or go to school. They only have protected rights, so the humans can‘t attack them.

Small town mystery with vampires!

I got so absorbed in the world and small town drama that the actual revelation of the killer felt like I was being robbed, though there were enough clues that I knew who it was going to be. I hope there‘s a sequel.

Apparently this was the 6th book in a series?! I quite liked this Vampyr murder mystery, all the twists kept me guessing

MrT ??? She‘s written 6 unrelated novels and 1 short story collection. There aren‘t linked in any way that I can figure out and I‘ve read them all. 4mo
mcctrish @MrT well I obviously read the blurb wrong 🤣🤣 I do think there could be a sequel to this one but that could be just how it ended 4mo

I really enjoyed this!! A world where vampires exist but they‘re not your stereotypical vampires. The book does a good job of establishing the rules & facts about them. I enjoyed Barbara as the detective in this story. There was mystery & suspense until the end. The only other book I‘ve read by the author is The Chalk Man which I also really enjoyed! This made for a great listen! I‘ll be eager to get to more of their books!

Quite good, a lot of fun to read! I love vampire stories so I was thrilled about this one from Tudor. I loved the police procedural aspect. I loved the characters both good and bad. I loved all of the secrecy and twists. I especially loved the snowy, cold, remote atmosphere of this fictional Alaskan town. I do wish Tudor had leaned in to the vampire aspect a bit more but it‘s still a very solid story with fun vampire lore. I need more from Tudor!

Reggie Yayy so glad you enjoyed it. I loved Barbara and her whole I‘m doing it right and by the book attitude. 5mo

A riveting vampire police procedural until the last quarter when it all kind of fell apart for me. A soft pick. Pictured: current mood.

Sunday morning, sitting with my pup, my favorite time to read ☕️

I saw this recently on @Reggie‘s feed and couldn‘t wait to grab it and read it myself. I loved Tudor‘s The Drift so I can‘t wait to really dig into this one. Just started it, only a few chapters in.

I feel like vampire books were trendy for a while but they sort of fell off of publishing lists. Hoping they‘ll come back!! I loooove a good vampire tale.

I love C.J. Tudor and found this to be an original addition to vampire lore. In a world where vampires are a known thing a detective has to investigate the death of a boy and decide whether it was caused by one and therefore warrants the murder of the local group of vampires. It was dark and twisted and I enjoyed the audiobook a lot. I‘ll read anything this author writes! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I loved this book. Since 1983, there are laws that prohibit humans from killing vampyres. In this world vampyres are a marginalized group living in colonies next to human cities but can never go to school or work a job. In a remote Alaskan town a boy is found dead and everyone is just itching for an excuse to cull a colony. Enter very even keeled, government agent Barbara. This is dark, everyone in the town has secrets. The twists! There is 👇🏼

Reggie an in between side story told in italics and at every turn I rolled my eyes and thought, pfffff I know what‘s going on. And at every turn I was wrong! lol so good. Pick!!! (edited) 6mo

Reggie @Rissreads I know. I watch these shorts that talk about what scares scientists. One is where people overpopulate the world. Well then this one scientist was like I don‘t think that will happen. He did this experiment where he introduced these mice into an environment of abundance. They grew their population but then formed groups and had outsiders that they fed off of and fought each other. The population topped out at 2300 when there was enough 6mo

Tudor‘s latest is a bit of a departure, mingling a traditional #SerialKillerThriller with a #vampire story but it really works—& leaves a set-up for a sequel! Barbara Atkins works for the FBI devoted to vampyr killings & is sent to the remote ex-mining town of Deadhart, AK where history seems to be repeating itself after a teenager seems to be the victim of a vampyr. The isolated community holds secrets, & despite slow pacing, finishes strong!

Breanne1 I immediately thought of the X-files 😂 7mo
TorieStorieS @Breanne1 Hahaha! That‘s what the character limitations causes!! This is more like a fantasy alternate universe where the vampyrs are discriminated against than an X Files sort of thriller! 7mo

Book 34📚 4⭐️

1 of 6 of my most anticipated thrillers for this year and what a way to start!✨

In a world where vampyrs are real and have laws with the human world. What happens when they are accused of murdering a teen? Do you cull the whole colony?

Ooo I hope there is a sequel to this one cause that epilogue is too good!

Oh my dear god. This is such a bizarre novel. C. J. Tudor has written another scary as hell thriller and I love it. Vampyrs live among us. They live in Colonies and all is definitely not well. A horrible history exists between them and humans and it is an uneasy coexistence, to say the least. Does the end of this book hint at a sequel? I dearly hope so. Barbara Atkins is a force to be reckoned with. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

In a modern world of protecting vampyre colonies since 1983, it‘s best a human avoid drinking a vampyre‘s blood if bitten. But vampyres have rules too…stick with animal blood, don‘t kill other vampyres, don‘t turn a child, be prepared to live for centuries and die for decades. You‘ll put your entire colony at risk should you murder a human and a human anthropologist of vampyres (the MC) authorizes the culling of your entire community. 👇

marleed Also religious fundamentalists have opinions because of course they do. …I‘m forever entertained reading vampire rules rewritten when the modern day is touched by magical realism. This epilogue is a great setup for the MC (picture a 51-yo Francis McDormand) taking her detective forensic vampyre anthropology skills to the next location where vampyres and humans might need her fair-minded approach to the next situation. 7mo

I‘ve read C. J Tudor‘s thrillers and I loved them and this book was no exception. This was a thriller mixed with vampires and I couldn‘t get enough. Once I started reading this book I just flew through it.

I definitely look forward to more books from this author and I also need to read some of her previous novels.

Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of this novel.

The best book I‘ve read this year. Set in a world where vampires live in colonies adjacent to humans in an uneasy truce. This is a murder mystery, with both human and vampire suspects. Barbara, the detective, must walk a fine line as tensions cause both groups to be on the edge of war. This was a fun read, and very interesting. I was never bored.

I received a copy from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.
