More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark | Alvin Schwartz
Do you like to be scared? Ellen had just fallen asleep when she heard a strange voice. "Ellen," it whispered, "I am coming up the stairs." Ellen was frightened and called her parents, but they didn't hear her, and they didn't come. . . . Welcome to the frightening world of Scary Stories, a collection of folklorist Alvin Schwartzs most alarming tales of horror, dark revenge, and supernatural events of all time, with spine-tingling illustrations by renowned artist Brett Helquist.

3. Yes! I usually try to wait until Sept 1st for the indoor decor. The outdoor decorations don't go out until October 1st because of my HOA.
4. The Scary stories to tell in the dark series
5. My Nightmare before Christmas Scentsy warmers.
6. I don't have any yet but I keep looking at horror themed bookmarks on Etsy. There is just so many I can't decide.

We read this one last night by the bonfire with some friends and their kiddos. It was so much fun to watch all the kids get spooked just a little by these stories.

I liked this more than the initial installment now that my expectations are more realistic and not based on how much I loved these books as a kid. It also helped that I listened to the audiobook version for a number of the stories, as the narrator gives quite a wonderfully over-the-top performance!

26 points total for theme/1 hr.

#scarathlon2020 #TeamHarkness #Screamathon

Addison_Reads Because this book has multiple stories in it you're allowed to count each story for points. I'm tagging our fearless leader just to make sure I'm correct about that. @StayCurious 4y
StayCurious @Addison_Reads @JoeMo yup each story counts! Maybe you have a higher points total than you thought! 4y

#105 of my year. First time reading this one lol the first one is and will forever be a classic and my absolute favorite. Listening to Another Me (with Dylan Matthews) Acoustic Seven Lions, Excision, Wooli

Caffeinated_Reader Ok so my favorite stories from this one was The Cat In The Shopping Bag and Thumpity-Thump I think I would have been most freaked out by those as a kid, in a good way lol I thoroughly enjoyed these tales. 4y

Here‘s a closeup of some of the kindle books I have that I‘m hoping are truly scary (goes with my last post). Are any of these must read for horror fans?

vivastory Hex & Malorie are excellent 4y

This was just fun to listen to. The narrator gives his all and makes these scary stories so entertaining. I loved these as a kid and enjoyed it now!

This is a collection of 3 Scary Stories books, one of which ticks off another #ReadYourSign prompt!

Despite the creepy stories and even creepier illustrations, my cat Petunia was not amused!

But I was!

My only complaint is that there were not more or longer stories! However the ones included were so fun!

If a man is buried in the wrong suit, is there an easier way to place him in the right suit than changing the whole suit? Can chairs move by themselves? Do baseball players play baseball after they die? And more!

mollyrotondo Love this collection! Brings me back to my childhood 5y

Book 4 and 5 finished up for #screamathon 👻 @4thhouseontheleft

I read these when I was in the 3rd grade and I've loved them since then. I decided it was time for a re-read. They are so much fun to read aloud with kids, and even adults. The illustrations are still some of the creepiest things I've ever seen.

Excellent Halloween fun!

alisiakae I plan on re-reading these at some point too! 5y

Blast from the past. I picked these up this weekend and I can't wait to read them. I was in elementary school that last time I read these.

Clwojick I have ALWAYS wanted to read these, but I haven‘t came across them at the thrift store yet. I‘ll have to make my way over there some day soon and see if they have more Halloween books out now. 5y
Sweetkokoro I just read these to my daughter about two months ago and while she didn‘t think the stories themselves were scary, the art is what really scared her. It was fun re-reading them with her though. 5y

Just as good as I remember!! My favorites were "Somebody Fell From Aloft", "The Man in the Middle" which always scared the bejesus out of me, and "The Church" for a little giggle. I blame these books for turning me into a horror addict and totally plan on looking up the resources in the bibliography now. ?☠

Looking for some good horror books for the summer! Preferably adult (middle school teacher here; need a break from kid books!) and not super long (like Stephen King) so I can read more than one on summer break. Any suggestions?

Ok, so i may have done a rather large Thriftbooks haul. I will most likely be getting books delivered everyday this week and these are the first three! 🙃

umbrellagirl I‘ve been after the top two! I still have the Scary Stories from when I was a kid. Enjoy! 6y
bookish_wookish I had them on my wish list for a while before the came in! Scary Stories was definitely a throwback buy for me! @umbrellagirl 6y

#1MoreScaryStory An even scarier story involved the schoolyard bully, drawing balls on all the cat-bats. 😹 South Park was just newly popular in '98. Sebastian once targeted me for a WWE wrestling punching bag, leading to my mother calling the police.. I can forgive the guy by now.. His attacks on me and others did get him expelled.

So these stories are actually a collections of folklore and legends from all over the place. It is possible that you have heard these stories told more than once from more than one source. Have you ever heard any of these stories outside of the Scary Stories series? If so which ones?

BookwormAHN I saw a version of Maybe You Will Remember on the old TV show Fact or Fiction and supposedly it was fact. 6y
BeansPage @BookwormAHN really??? That would be interesting to know. 😳 6y
BookwormAHN Also Alligators reminded me loosely of The Blackwater Saga by Michael McDowell. 6y

inthegreensandblues I realize now that these books were my introduction to a lot of urban legends that I would hear over and over again. Like the babysitter story, the hook, and the stories of roadside ghosts, like in The Wreck. 6y
inthegreensandblues @BookwormAHN @TheReadingMermaid I have heard a more in depth version of Maybe You Will Remember sometime recently and can't recall where. Maybe it was an episode of Lore or another podcast? That is a really psychologically scary story! 6y
BeansPage @inthegreensandblues I think it could have been Lore actually. I think I remember the episode you're talking about. And yes that story is a mental mind f*ck for sure. 6y
Dan_SpiderCrafts I noticed some cartoon retellings, like the 90s show Freaky Stories. Several including The Hook, and Sam's New Pet renamed as Dog From Mexico. 6y

🕷🕷 Not nearly as good as the other one. Both the stories and the pictures were less frightening and less memorable. I feel like they used up their good stories in the first book. At least this book was less interactive.
