Legendborn (Legendborn 1)
Legendborn (Legendborn 1) | Tracy Deonn
Filled with mystery and an intriguingly rich magic system, Tracy Deonn's YA contemporary fantasy reinvents the King Arthur legend and "braids together Southern folk traditions and Black Girl Magic into a searing modern tale of grief, power, and self-discovery" (Dhonielle Clayton, New York Times bestselling author of The Belles). After her mother dies in an accident, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews wants nothing to do with her family memories or childhood home. A residential program for bright high schoolers at UNC-Chapel Hill seems like the perfect escape--until Bree witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus. A flying demon feeding on human energies. A secret society of so called "Legendborn" students that hunt the creatures down. And a mysterious teenage mage who calls himself a "Merlin" and who attempts--and fails--to wipe Bree's memory of everything she saw. The mage's failure unlocks Bree's own unique magic and a buried memory with a hidden connection: the night her mother died, another Merlin was at the hospital. Now that Bree knows there's more to her mother's death than what's on the police report, she'll do whatever it takes to find out the truth, even if that means infiltrating the Legendborn as one of their initiates. She recruits Nick, a self-exiled Legendborn with his own grudge against the group, and their reluctant partnership pulls them deeper into the society's secrets--and closer to each other. But when the Legendborn reveal themselves as the descendants of King Arthur's knights and explain that a magical war is coming, Bree has to decide how far she'll go for the truth and whether she should use her magic to take the society down--or join the fight.

I was a little disappointed by this one. I was really looking forward to it, but felt like the relationships were a little contrived. Also, I was a little bored by the male leads. Not sure if I‘m going to finish the series. Should I?

A little late, but I did finish the last #LMPBC book! I really liked this book and plan to continue the series. Based on Arthurian legend, Bree goes to college early and enrolls in a secret society to discover the secrets of her mother‘s death.

Great pick! And I‘m so glad it was picked, otherwise I wouldn‘t have read it! It was a great round of books we had and I‘m glad it was so great for the last one!

wanderinglynn This has been on my shelf for a while. I really need to read it. 5mo
Meshell1313 Yay!!! I enjoyed them all also but Bone Shard was my fav! Did you read the rest of that series yet? 5mo

I won‘t give too much away since this is our #LMPBC #GroupM book, but I enjoyed this story of Bree finding her magic and figuring out who is really is and exploring her ancestral roots. The King Arthur storyline surprised me so much- I didn‘t think it was necessary but I guess there‘s something there about the Western cannon, colonialism and racism. Will def pick up book 2 after that crazy ending! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

Will mail to @Catsandbooks next week!

I'm at the halfway mark through Legendborn, and it's a great book so far. The pacing is consistent(thank goodness), the characters are well written, and I think there may be some romance blossoming in the chapters to come! I'm having a great time :)

I am somewhere between so so and a pick. I really liked the last bit. But I struggled getting into this. Things I really liked - the slow burn that turns into a love triangle. The dueling views of magic, in general I enjoyed the characters.
I felt lost often with the relationship w/ Patricia one minute she is helping the next Bree is refusing to see her, I never understand why. The balance between school and Alice & Secrets was a bit off.

I thought this YA urban fantasy was very well done! It tackled grief and trauma, as well as the legacy of slavery in the south, and its lasting effects today - all while telling a super fun reimagining of Arthurian legends. I'll definitely pick up the sequel!

The lyrics to this song totally sum up my feelings and excitement after finishing this book! I‘ve always loved the Arthur legend and to have a story weave that with African American culture in a brilliant thrilling way! It was just very refreshing. Bree, Nick and Sel were all fantastic characters. I‘m now dying having to wait for book2!

My #newyearwhodis list from @HOTPock3tt ! I‘ve already read some of these (One Last Stop almost made it onto my own list), and I‘m excited to read some of the others! Legendborn has been on my TBR for a while so I‘m definitely starting with that one—it sounds right up my alley! Plus I see that @AbigailJaneBlog , provider of last year‘s fantastic NYWD list, loved it too! 😄

AbigailJaneBlog YES IT WAS SO GOOD! I'm actually sending it out as part of one of my holiday swaps 🔥🔥🔥 3y
TheKidUpstairs One Last Stop is on so many lists! @monalyisha put it on her list too, and it's available at my library so I'm excited to read it! The hardest part is waiting until January to start! 3y

I absolutely loved this book. I read it slower because I went on vacation last week, and my days were so busy with activities, but whenever I could I grabbed the book and tried to read even a snippet at a time. It became addictive. So much so that I don‘t know how I‘ll be able to wait for the publication of its sequel.

Also I love Sel.

Women with swords, monsters and magical powers- what more could you want? Representation in main characters? Badass black history? You got it! We see Bree interact with a lot of people whom were very close to her. I was particularly fond of Bree's therapist and her relationship. Deonn was able to add a lot of background information to their therapy sessions to inform both the reader and Bree about the magical world, and it really worked.

Legendborn is the first book in a new series. Read it for the January special mission book for the Avengers Reading Challenge.
***
Really good book about female empowerment and discusses race and gender. Bree is a girl grieving and struggling to move beyond it. It‘s a book about struggles and trials and finding ultimately who you are.
The ending had me 😱😱😱, second book should be interesting, can‘t wait.

So, TL:DR, really fascinating story. If like me, you tend to find fantasy kind of long winded, um, the audio is almost 19 hours here, and there's no author's note or anything in there. If like me you're bored of only one kind of people having magic in any one story, this story addresses that. Also, while main questions are answered, um, one character's fate is I'm guessing the plot of book 2.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Legendborn is grief and empowerment. It deals with racism and gender. It‘s a beautiful story of grieving and finding yourself through trials. I really enjoyed Bree as a character. She‘s strong and feisty. I enjoyed the romance. The world building was well done and very interesting. I really look forward to the sequel.

This book blew my socks off. I absolutely loved the twists and turns. The beginning is a bit slow, but the overall picked up in the second half. I really felt connected to Bri and her struggles. I laughed, cried, screamed and gasped during this book. I loved it so much.

This is a fantasy with a King Arthur spin that deals with racism, gender identity, magic, folklore, mythology, emotional wellness, and intergenerational trauma. If you think that is ambitious for one book, I would agree. While it has a good storyline, it was difficult to feel any one storyline really was completely addressed, leaving me wanting at times. However, the eager representation for inclusion is clear and makes it readworthy.

BookBelle84 I'm 25% into this one and struggling with whether I'll finish it 4y
Book_yogi @BookBelle84 I have a hard time ever DNF a book because I always think it might get better. In my opinion, I was disappointed. I am surprised I have seen so many great reviews. I don't think you will be missing too much if you stop. 4y

Blending Southern Black Girl Magic & Aurthurian legends, this YA urban fantasy is hugely entertaining, sure to be a hit, & likely to push YA urban fantasy in new directions. The book is out in September so no spoilers but... it has ALL the ingredients—secret societies, battle between good & evil, really well-developed & intriguing magic system, a fantastic main character, great secondary characters & more. Very good. Highly recommended.
