A world centered around an infinite library. It‘s an ode to how books have the power to shape a world.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4.5/5)

Let me start off by saying that “The Book That Wouldn‘t Burn” starts off slow, and I honestly found it hard to stay interested until the last third of the book (and this book is big). However, once I got to the first plot twist, my mind was simply blown. The world-building, plot, and interconnections still has me reeling, and the implications of the ending creates no doubt that I will be reading the sequel in this trilogy.

I just read the first two books in this series. Both are picks. They have complex, layered and unique world-building. MC's are very engaging. There is a romance subplot but no spice. I have always considered Lawrence a very good writer, but he is definitely stepping up a level here. I'm too old for coming of age stories to be 100% in my lane. I think it will be a 5 star book for a lot of fantasy fans but it's a 4 for me.

Imaginative, very nicely written, with some jaw-dropping plot twists. World-building is terrific and the characters are deeply drawn and those you can come to really care about. I did find things confusing at first, which dropped my rating of the book a little.

I look forward to the rest of the series, but will have to re-read this one when I get all the books.

I listened to the audiobook read by Jessica Wittaker who did a great job.

All the time I've been reading this it has reminded me of my first time reading the original Abhorsen trilogy for no good reason.
Now a non human character has shown up, that is reminiscent of my favourite character in Lirael and Abhorsen.
Vaguest of vague to avoid spoilers.

TrishB I need to get to this one! In the new year 😁 12mo
Balibee146 @TrishB I think you will really enjoy this one. Book 2 out in April if I remember right 👍 12mo

I didn‘t read any 5 star books this month but my favorite this month was this one. It‘s going to be hard for anything to beat Forth Wing for me, but we‘ll see what Oct brings! 🍂🍁🎃

My #TBRtarot pick for Sept was a slow start. All the reviews said to stick with it and I‘m glad I did because about 1/2 way through I finally got hooked and couldn‘t put it down. But man could that have used some editing. Still, it was a very unique story with magical libraries and played around with time a lot. And WOW that twist at the end. I did not see that coming. Now I can‘t wait for the second book but hope I get hooked quicker! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

CBee Love when a book turns out that way 😊 1y

I sure had a rocky start with that one. Or rather a rocky first part of the book. I really thought that I might not be a fantasy reader anymore. I had no connection to the overpowered characters and the story didn't get me. But I liked the world building, so I continued. And then I got blown away. The book took me in more and more, and it really, really got me. I love the message of the book and what it stands for. What a surprise!

Twainy Yes! I had a few slow starts in the past month but I enjoyed this overall. 1y

This ended up being a low pick for me.

It's an epic story with an interesting premise, the characters were a fun mix with varied personalities and backgrounds, but at times following the back and forth in the timeline was frustrating. And to be fair, it could have been a tad bit shorter.

Overall though if you're wanting a new fantasy read to get lost in for a little while that also happens to have a badass library in it, give this one a try.

TrishB It‘s on my pile- I really enjoy this author. 1y

This is a good one—a great story (although the author occasionally uses more words than he needs to in telling it) a fascinating world, & some mind-blowing twists. At the center of it all is an impossibly large, ancient library with secret chambers, lost chambers, countless books & even more books. Two people who should never meet do & in so doing, start to unravel the mystery at the heart of the library. I‘ll definitely continue the series.

Starting the morning with this one because everything about it screams “Read me. Read me now!” Because honestly, how is one supposed to resist the title AND the cover? I want a library with stairs like that!

This book was just what I needed at the end of a four day power outage. Instead of fretting about all the food going bad, I was able to escape into Lawrences‘s time bending world where the concept of enemy is literally in the eye of the beholder. Everyone is battling over the Library and the knowledge contained therein, but as Livira comes to understand “… an ocean of knowledge is apt to drown you long before it educates you.” (p.251)

I feel this is going to be way better on a reread! While I enjoyed and recommend the audiobook I oddly feel I‘d be more attached to the treeware version. I look forward to it when book two comes out. Hopefully TBB will be offering book two also because the hardcover of book one is stunning. Great book, read it! :)

Bk6 of my recent #BookHaul (this one I actually went to a bookstore for)is this intriguing new fantasy from the author of the Red Sister trilogy. Evar has lived his whole life trapped in a huge library, older than empires & larger than cities. Livira lives out in the Dust where no one goes & nightmares hunt. No one knows who they are, that‘s about to change.

peanutnine Amazing cover 🤩🤩 2y

Gorgeous cover!

Book about books and a library with non-academia background.

The prose was good, the pacing off, the world-building lacking.
