In #russia in 2012 five members of Pussy Riot went into a church & sang a punk song in protest of the church telling its members to vote for Putin. Three members were arrested & charged with “felony hooliganism motivated by religious hatred,” and this book was written/compiled while they were in prison. Very scary.

Damn these women are inspiring! This is a mix of letters from prison, poetry and court transcripts. These are the sort of people I look up to in a big way and embody the true spirit of punk.
Here‘s a great interview from on of them https://bust.com/feminism/19271-from-russia-with-love-nadya-interview.html on resisting trump.
I used this for #readharder2019 book written in prison prompt.

gradcat Even my mother loves these women!! Great post 👍❤️ 6y
Weaponxgirl @gradcat thanks! How could anyone not love these women?! I realised that for someone who is always reading books by and about women that for women‘s history month I was slacking so this was a great way to read some women‘s history. 6y
Weaponxgirl Oh it‘s also a #womenintranslation, I‘m behind on my goal of reading one book a month. 6y

Reecaspieces They are admirable and strong! No doubt about it. 6y
gradcat Yes! There you go—two birds with one stone! 6y
BibliOphelia 🖤 Pussy Riot! I was in Moscow when they were arrested, and have followed them closely since. They are such an inspiration! 6y
Weaponxgirl @Reecaspieces 🖤 hell yes 6y
Weaponxgirl @BibliOphelia wow! I bet that added a extra layer of emotion to following what happened to them. 6y
BibliOphelia It definitely made me feel closer to the whole thing. It was just prior to the “election” and there were tons of protests (and crackdowns 😔) everywhere so we had to be very mindful of where and when we went out. At least the incredibly frigid weather helped us feel ok about being stuck in! 6y

I got my wisdom teeth extracted yesterday so I'm spending today vicariously marching by looking out for the protest posters I made for my friends on the news and social media. Rooting for all my #NastyWomen and Men representing out on the streets today! 😘 #WomensMarch #WhyIMarch #WomensMarchOnWashington #lettering #signpainting

First podium: Amnesty International Imprisoned Writers Series focussing on governmental surveillance with pieces by Pussy Riot, Edward Snowden and Robert Galbraithe read by some of #edbookfest authors

[DELETED] 3323341091 have you read Comradely Greetings? it is a collection of letters exchanged between nadya tolokonnikova & slavoj zizek during her imprisonment. it is a fascinating read.
