Bread is baked, stew is simmering, and the cats are fed. It‘s finally time to read.
This is an excellent book about those left behind in London and in Malta. The title of the book is tongue in cheek since the brave were never jus on the front line
Happy Saturday! I'm finally getting around to reading this one. 🙌
It took a while to get into and to keep going, and the ending was a little lackluster as well. Besides that, it was still a pretty decent story. I enjoyed the characters even if there wasn't much character growth. I'd recommend if you want a light read.
I really enjoyed this WWII historical fiction novel following the lives of four friends. I wasn‘t aware of the racial issues in London during that time. I also gained some insight into the issue of class. A very good read from a different perspective (at least for me) than other books of the genre. The audiobook narration was by Luke Thompson and was excellent.
Just started this one. Literally only 5-6 pages in and I already adore it!
How have I never read this book before?! It is beautiful and poetic, heart-wrenching and hopeful. It‘s definitely not your “usual” WWII book. It‘s very character-driven, following four friends through the war and their experiences. This book will not leave my thoughts anytime soon. #Libby #ebook #Kindle

Day 81

I seem to have never met a WWII book I didn‘t love and this was no exception. I loved this. The writing was literary and decadent. The dialogue was witty and wry. It‘s depressing as heck, don‘t get me wrong, but somehow I was ok with that here. The ending was not everything I‘d hoped it would be but it was in keeping with the story and for that reason I can‘t be mad at it.
1. I worked in a sexually transmitted diseases clinic.
2. My first grandchild was born this morning.

Day 13: I‘m following the idea to post a book from my tbr list from @StaceyKondla and @Cortg
No description or reason for wanting to read it is necessary if you want to join along. #tbrpile
“But what good is it to teach a child to count, if you don‘t show him that he counts for something?”

My April wrap up. Definitely haven‘t had as much time to read as I‘d like.
Donut mission accomplished! Enjoying with my coffee & book. And yes, those donuts are square. I‘m not a big donut fan, but these are delicious! 🍩📚☕️
The book starts off slow, and I had trouble getting into it. As it progressed, I really enjoyed reading about the war‘s effect on 2 completely diff characters. We see Mary, a young socialite, struggle to contribute something during the war despite her family remaining virtually unaffected. In contrast, Alistair is living the harrowing experience of a soldier in the midst of the war. I also thought the ending of their story was quite realistic.
I was looking for my next book & my husband insisted on this one, so here we go!
“London lit her up from the inside” Same girl! 🏴

For the most part, I enjoyed what I read this month but ‘Everyone Brave is Forgiven‘ was probably my favorite. It was a book club selection that I would not have picked up otherwise (I was feeling kind of burned out on WWII historical fiction and didn‘t think this one would add much) but surprise, surprise — I loved it!
I think I picked this up at the wrong time? It didn‘t wow me like I expected it would and didn‘t seem to add much to the genre of WWII fiction. #tbrread #wintergames #merryreaders
One thing I‘ve learned from history is that in war as in love, forgiveness is the masterpiece of emotional intelligence. Without it, how can we move forward?
#forgiveness is the cornerstone of this novel 😔

Liking this audiobook very much from RBDigital, borrowed from the library. Narrator is Luke Thompson. #anglophilesoflitsy #WWII #historicalfiction #theblitz
A WWII historical fiction set in England. There was a gripping drowning scene, but it is much like other books in the genre.
I just love historical fiction and especially World War II, and this book didn't disappoint. First I felt like it was a bit too fast-paced with those big leaps ahead in time, but this actually helped to show a more encompassing view on the characters' fates. This is no corny love story but rather the tale of two people struggling to love again after so much loss, with the shattered pieces of their hearts.(But boy, was it also so damn witty!)

In this one, we follow the lives of 4 friends #CarryingTheBanner in WWII London.
I usually enjoy these types of books, but I struggled to get into this one. I recall a lot of skimming by the end 😬
Finding this hard to put down. Rather, turn off. 😄 The reader is excellent. I haven‘t read much about the Blitz. So interesting. And horrid.
This story follows four friends through the first years of the war. Two spoiled rich girls who volunteer because war is exciting, and two men; one who chooses to fight and one who doesn‘t want to. Simmering under the surface is class, race and racism, education, friendships, jealousy and guilt. This book was much more than the sum of its parts, with unexpected humour and wit, and I really enjoyed it.
A novel about three people and their experiences in London during WWII. The story is engrossing and heartbreaking and at one point when I was reading it on the train during my commute to work I literally gasped out loud and yelled, “Nooo!!” I think my favorite thing is the way the author has drawn the characters – they really came to life for me. Which makes sense since the author based the characters on his own grandparents.
My #justabookswap package arrived! (And just in time for the weekend!)
Thank so much @wen4blu ! These look awesome and I can‘t wait to read them!
Also thank you @TheBookKeepers for putting together this swap!
A little holiday book haul, all for £. I was very good and restricted myself only to books on my wish list. I‘m feeling very happy about the tagged book as it‘s been on my list for a while and I found a virtually new copy in our campsite‘s little library (don‘t worry I left one behind in exchange!)
I‘ve read all of his other books and savoured each one because of his beautiful writing. There is a tenderness to the way he develops his characters with his moving prose, they are deep and complex, much like the setting. The only negative was the pace which moved between slow & steady. This was probably deliberate to let the story unfold, to immerse the reader in WWII, and to develop the characters. Stay with it, you‘ll be glad you did.
I‘ve been living out of a hotel room this week up in Amarillo, Texas, spending evenings working, watching HGTV and the travel channel, and rotating reading between my book, Kindle book, and audiobook.
I am all of 12 pages into this one and the writing is brilliant!! I can tell I will struggle to put this one down.
I had a hard time getting into this as I felt it was slow to start however after the initial hump it was thoroughly entertaining. A detailed and thoughtful presentation of how war effects people on different ways. It was said, uplifting and a delicious lily enjoyable read.
Sometimes I just want to read something purely for entertainment value, and this fit the bill pretty well. It tells a good story that‘s sad and uplifting, with a little bit of humor now and then.
Post 2 of 3: My mom was truly the one to foster my love of reading. We always had great book at home. One of my fondest childhood memories is of her reading me Anne of Green Gables. We both still love it. We did a weekend in PEI in 2015 and saw the play again after 30 years. When she saw my #bookhaul she called dibs on these 8. They'll go to school after mom has read them. Maybe she'll agree to come to my classroom to book talk a couple of them.

A fantastic book. The jaunty-English voice took awhile to get used to, but a suburb story throughout.
