The Narrative of Sojourner Truth
The Narrative of Sojourner Truth | Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth, one of the most revered figures in American history, explains her road to liberation, spiritual enlightenment and the development of her feminist values. Its a critical view of her enduring commitment to freedom and equality. In The Narrative of Sojourner Truth, the author delivers an honest look at her eventful life. Starting in New York, where she born to enslaved parents, Sojourner eventually escaped with her daughter in tow. Later, she became the first black woman to sue a white slaveowner for custody of her own child. She won the case, setting a precedent that many African Americans would follow. This narrative also includes her work as a preacher, where she focused on spreading the word of God. Truth became a charismatic orator, seeking liberation and gender equality. The Narrative of Sojourner Truth is a harrowing yet inspiring tale of an American hero. It explores how a formerly enslaved woman defied the odds to become a powerful beacon of hope. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Narrative of Sojourner Truth is both modern and readable.

This spunky, resilient woman faced a lot of horrific circumstances and did some extraordinary things. Well worth the read, though it should be noted that the work is not actually autobiographical.

#BookNDinner! I received a nice gift card for some of the shoveling I did ☺️, so I went out tonight now that the snow is cleared away enough. Accompaniment this cold and wet evening was: salmon, lobster tail, shrimp, mashed potatoes, Caesar salad, biscuits, and unsweetened iced tea. MMMmmm 😋! Happy reads & happy eats! 😎👌🏻

Sojourner‘s story is an important one and she was a remarkable woman. The narrative has some religious tangents that were tedious as they took away from her actual story, but it‘s still well worth a read.

Born into slavery in New York, Sojourner Truth was an abolitionist, women‘s rights activist and author. She continued her work for the rest of her life, earning an audience with President Abraham Lincoln and becoming one of the world‘s best-known human rights crusaders. This is her autobiography. She never learned to read or write. The book was dictated to Oliver Gilbert in 1850. An amazing woman!

This is getting a soso from me because I got very tired very quickly of reading so much of Gilberts opinion. I wanted to learn about Sojourner Truth not what Gilbert felt abot everything. This works as an introduction but I‘ll look elsewhere for a thorough look at Truth‘s life.

#readblackwomen #celebrateblackwomen Narrative of Sojourner Truth. Keep in mind that Truth narrated this story to Olive Gilbert. I‘m considering it to be a mix between a biography and an autobiography.

This was well written. I had no idea what I was beginning to read when I began. These classics can be difficult reading at times. Read with Serial Reader. I think it would be best read if it wasn‘t read in daily installments.

I challenged myself to read at least 10 classics from Serial Reader in 2018-here's#3. I simply love the short segments that arrive at noon everyday so I can escape into a good read instead of grading papers over lunch break❤️📚🤓

Gezemice This is on my list! I tried serial reader but the short segments don‘t fit my style. I read in bigger chunks, so I either skip ahead and read a bunch or feel pestered by notifications to read when I don‘t feel like it. 7y
Sills @Gezemice Honestly if it wasn't for a very short teacher break at school It wouldn't be my style either. Not sure what I'll do during the summer months😳 7y

AHHHHHHHHHHHH
Sojourner Truth nearly went to Fruitlands
She would have faced off with Bronson Alcott so badly, and found a kindred spirit in Abba May.

Sojourner Truth was an American abolitionist, traveling preacher, former slave, and fighter for women‘s rights. This text is an account of her earlier years, as told to a colleague. At the point when it was written it appears that Truth was unable to read and write.

At times the narrative was a little dry, but the historical importance of the text allows us to overlook this. Sojourner was a strong woman who faithfully resisted.

Velvetfur Oohh that book sounds powerful, and that's a wonderful statue 👍 7y
kspenmoll @Dolly Been meaning to visit Florence ever since my neighbor told me about the walking tour/statue. I only live about 50 minutes away depending on traffic. Maybe this spring! 7y
Libby1 @jfalkens - no, I‘m not! I found the image on Google. Do you live near it? I used to live in Illinois but I‘m in Northern Ireland now. 😃 7y
Libby1 @Dolly and @kspenmoll - I hope you are able to see the statue in MA. I do like it, too, @Velvetfur , and am glad it exists - in multiple places! 7y
jfalkens @Libby1 I'm about 45 mins north of Battle Creek or 20 mins north of Kalamazoo and 45 mins south of Grand Rapids 😊 7y

jfalkens @Libby1 I bet Ireland is beautiful! And probably not as cold as here 7y
Libby1 You‘re right on both accounts, @jfalkens ! It can be a bit bleak and grey for weeks on end, but that usually doesn‘t bother me. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 7y
jfalkens @Libby1 better than the bitter cold and snow we are getting now. 7y

Learning about Sojourner Truth's journey through pre-Civil War America, slavery, and devout, if unconventional, faith was a treat. I also think it's important to know what atrocities humans are capable of. The storytelling leaves something to be desired, as it isn't written from Sojourner's perspective and has numerous asides.

I really wish this had been more of a biography than it is. I appreciate the look into her life, but as it is written by another person who likes to interject the story with asides it seems to distract from Sojourner's story.

I have to be honest with this one, I found it very hard to connect to the writing style and story. That being said, the life she led was an interesting one and an important narrative, nonetheless.

Gonna be honest: I preferred Frederick Douglass's narrative to this. I probably shouldn't have read them back to back. This was actually written by another person, who relayed the events of Truth's life, and I did not like the narrator's interjections nor their writing style. I'd love to learn more about Sojourner's life, but I think a biography might be the way to go for me.

tournevis I really liked this bio, but then again, I'm an academic historian so those kinds of old-style narratives don't bother me much. Truth is a heroine is every sense of the word. 8y
8little_paws @tournevis I don't mind the old style of language, it's more Olive Gilbert's interjections. I don't think she's reliable and interjects her own thoughts too much. I wish this had come straight from Sojourner. 8y
tournevis We all do wish it, but Gilbert's is the closest we can get. 8y
8little_paws @tournevis I did myself a disservice reading this immediately after the excellent Frederick Douglass narrative. I really liked his writing and felt connected to his story in a way that Gilbert wouldn't let me. 8y

#blameitonlitsy definitely Serial Reader. Never heard of it before! I loved reading the Narrative of Frederick Douglass on it, but to be honest this narrative of Sojourner Truth I'm not enjoying as much. Interesting woman for sure, but the writing style doesn't attract my attention.

@RealLifeReading
this is my nonfic shelf on Goodreads 📚 and I'm currently reading 'Lab Girl'..
The last one read, The Narrative of Sojourner Truth', is a ⭐⭐⭐ stars book for me: I thought it was an actual memoir of her life, but it's not.. And I didn't like Gilbert's constant interjections at all!

8little_paws I think I'm with you on that. I'm reading it now on serial reader. I preferred the Frederick Douglass book I read on there. 8y
