It really is as good as Iremember it. Along with Jules Vern or HG Wells, Frank Herbert was one of the OG authors who mashed up sci-fi and fantasy. There is so much packed into this one book: commentary on politics, commentary on society, religion, feminism, toxic masculinity (before that was even a thing), revenge, love. I feel like the grandfather at the beginning of “The Princess Bride” explaining to his grandson why this book is so exciting.

I had fairly high expectations for a such a well-regarded sci-fi book. While I appreciated the potential of the world-building, I disliked pretty much all the characters and the plot. Also, why did most people have thematic or space-y names and the main characters were called Paul and Jessica? Paul gave off major "not like the other girls" vibes. None of his victories seemed earned. The religious context was incoherent. Not recommended.

I haven‘t read much fiction in a long, long time. I enjoyed the movies but wanted to get deeper into the lore, into the world building, so I picked up the first book in the Dune Chronicles. The cover art is beautiful.

Also I had a baby, so I haven‘t had much time to do really anything this year.

I first read Dune in high school. I remember that I enjoyed the strong female characters, the world building, and the sand worms;however, I was bored with the political and religious elements. Reading it over 40 years later, I am struck by how relevant the political and religious elements are today. I plan to read at least the next two or three in the series.

MaGoose I've never read this book. I guess I need to correct that at some point. 6mo

Not sure if posting bookish memes is a faux pas on Litsy, but this was too good not to share

Ruthiella Litsy is all about bookish memes. But I don‘t get it? And I have read Dune. Please to explain… 7mo
Pruzy @Ruthiella There‘s a recent meme trend about girl and boy math, which tends to satirize what each tends to either spend their money or what statistics they tend to fudge (e.g. height). The joke here is that this fudged/subjectively justified “math” will if taken to its extreme lead to plans of galactic domination like the Bene Gesserits‘ plans 7mo
Ruthiella Got it! 😂 Thanks! I'll bet the Bene Gesserits started as a book club, completely harmless… 7mo

Dune all over the place!

Re-read before going to see Dune 2. Split reading the physical copy and listening to the audio to be sure I was done before the movie. Soo much better than the first read, I was able to catch ua lot more detail and the audio helped with some of the more challenging pronunciation.

The movie was great, but as always the book was better. And EVEN better the 2nd time around.
I‘m hooked all over again!

I only just found out Frank‘s son did a novel that fills the gap between Dune and Dune Messiah. Also, I booked tickets for the 2nd Villeneuve movie. Those are all the excuses I needed to re-read this masterpiece. This book is so imaginative & evocative. I love Lynch/Villeneuve‘s films but honestly, there is a beauty & depth to this novel that just can‘t exist outside of the page. The phrase is mis/over-used now, but this is proper “world-building”

RamsFan1963 I have Paul of Dune by Brian Herbert & Kevin J. Anderson. I haven't gotten around to reading it, some of their Dune prequels weren't very good (although I did like the first prequel trilogy House Atreides, House Harkonnen and House Corrino). 8mo
The_Book_Ninja Yes, I‘ve seen the hate for the Herbert Jr/ Anderson books. Guess I‘ll have to find out for myself… 8mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja I'd have to weigh in on the "Hate" side. I read The Butlerian Jihad, and it was a greater abomination than Alia of the Knife ? Now, as pulp space opera, I guess it was ok, but as part of Herbert Senior's legacy, it was a ? from me. Difficult not to play in your dad's 10,000 year sandbox, though. 8mo

So I promised my son I‘d read his beloved Dune before the 2nd movie came out in March. It‘s slow going for me, I‘m not a big sci-fi reader. Now that I‘ve finished my library book, I need to turn my attention back to it. I went out and bought my copy. I don‘t mind this movie cover at all but can always, always do without these “Dune Part 2” non-removable stickers on them. ☹️

I spent the afternoon helping my son and his partner pick up this little guy from a rescue centre, bringing him home to his forever seitch.
His previous name was based on his fur colour, and while not the very worst it could have been, was inappropriate enough to require a re-naming. So, welcome Leto to #CatsOfLitsy 🐈‍⬛😻

Bookwomble My son's a Dune fan due to childhood indoctrination, Leto (Duke, rather than God-Emperor) apparently being the least objectionable name his partner was prepared to accept 😄 1y

Bookwomble @merelybookish He's appreciated and loved 😊 They'd picked out another cat initially, who was temporarily fostered, but by the time the animal sanctuary had done the paperwork, the fosterer had bonded and asked to keep them, which my son's partner was really upset by. Leto was from a different, more efficient, sanctuary and is already settling in, so this was the cat they were meant to have! 1y

⭐️⭐️

It took me several months to get through this monster of a book, and despite it being a classic, I struggled to get through it. The world-building and plot was difficult to grasp, and a lot of the book was simply boring. There were certain moments that kept me entertained, but most of my reading consisted of trying to understand the abundance of confusing terminology and what was actually happening in the book.

Amiable Props to you for getting through it. I tried reading it at the urging of my husband and son (both of whom love this book). I made it 100 pages before I finally said, “Nope.” 😖 1y

I‘ve been wanting to read Dune for a while now. I watched the new movie (never seen any of the old) and it gave me the courage to read this. I understood the world and story a bit. Normally, I would never watch a movie before the book but it helped here.

I really enjoyed Dune. A true classic that I have finally crossed off my TBR. The world building is incredible. I very much enjoyed Paul's story and his growth into Muad-Dib. There are many more memorable characters and scenes. And sandworms! The first 100 pages might be slow, but they are very important to the rest of the book. I The appendices are very helpful.
I am looking forward to seeing the new movies and reading the rest of the series.
