October Country | Ray Bradbury
post image

My selection for book 9 of #ClassicSummer2024 came onto my radar as I was making my way through Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Approximately halfway through the first season I noticed an adaptation of a Bradbury story. One that I was not familiar with. The basic premise of Shopping For Death is that extreme heat can cause increased aggression, even homicidal tendencies. Shopping For Death would be retitled as Touched w/ Fire in the tagged book.

Cathythoughts Stacking 👍🏻❤️ 8mo
vivastory @Cathythoughts I love Bradbury's stories. Last year I made my way through his gigantic volume of 100 stories throughout the year. I dipped into it randomly throughout the yr & finished on New Year's. It was wonderful 💙 8mo
RohitSawant I first heard about it in a King interview where he mentioned “The Emissary” and it‘s become one of my often reread collections since. 8mo
vivastory @RohitSawant It's really hard to nail down King's influences. He's such an avid reader & you can see different writers peek out from time to time, sometimes even multiple authors in the same book. But Bradbury has always def been a big influence. 8mo
RohitSawant @vivastory So true about there being a cluster of influences even in a single story. And Bradbury is definitely a big one, yeah. I remember a vid where King mentions him alongside Matheson as key influences. Paraphrasing here, but he talked about how unlike Poe or Lovecraft, who explored the weird tale in a traditional Gothic setting, Matheson especially localized the horror, bringing it to everyday places, which really struck a chord with him. 8mo

Ripley Under Ground | Patricia Highsmith
post image

Set six years after The Talented Mr. Ripley, book two in Highsmith's Ripley series is a tense book as Ripley is now married & involved in an art forgery scheme that is threatening to fall apart. Highsmith is great reading anytime of year, but her Ripley books are especially great summertime reading. This is one of the rare books where I liked the sequel more than the first.
#ClassicSummer2024 Book 8

Cathythoughts Imagine Ripley is married in this one. That sounds interesting 😳 8mo
vivastory @Cathythoughts I think you'd like it! I've been meaning to finish the series. I don't know if you are much of a movie watcher but yesterday I saw a trailer for an upcoming movie with Anne Hathaway & Jessica Chastain & I definitely got Patricia Highsmith vibes It's called Mother's Instinct. Have you seen this trailer @barbarabb @leahbergen (edited) 8mo
Cathythoughts I love movies. I‘ll be watching out for this one. Thankyou Scott 👍🏻❤️ (edited) 8mo

vivastory @Cathythoughts That sounds like so much fun! Any recent favorites? I noticed that my local independent theatre is showing Amadeus next week. I'm thinking of going. 8mo
Cathythoughts Very good. I think I‘ll watch Amadeus 👍🏻 , I think on Apple. The last good movie we saw was , Dance First , based on the life of Samuel Beckett , it‘s very good 👍🏻 8mo
vivastory @Cathythoughts Dance First wasn't on my radar, but I'm definitely intrigued. Will check it out! 8mo
LeahBergen Thanks, Scott! I‘m off to look it up. 8mo

Jumpei Nik visits a village to collect insects. He finds himself trapped at the bottom of a sand dune along with a woman & a small house. Jumpei has to clean the house at night due to the heat. The local villagers send down the bare essentials to keep them alive, but refuse to help them escape. Abe's novel is often interpreted as an existential story & Abe has frequently been labeled Japan's Kafka.

The Passion According to G.H. | Clarice Lispector
post image

A woman, G.H., in a Rio de Janeiro apartment goes into her maid's room after she has quit. She finds only a strange drawing on the wall & a cockroach in a cabinet. What follows is a monologue that is in turns mesmerizing, baffling, luminous, unsettling & mystical. An unforgettable experience.

merelybookish Still haven't read anything by Lispector, although I mean to! 8mo
sarahbarnes What @merelybookish said! I‘ve been wanting to read something by her for a long time. 8mo
BarbaraBB I‘m in awe. I found this a difficult book to read. 8mo

vivastory @merelybookish @sarahbarnes This is a short read, but at times perplexing. I've read a few of Lispector's works & it's my favorite. I also really liked Hour of the Star 8mo
vivastory @BarbaraBB I didn't get all of it, I plan on revisiting it at some point. Def an experience! 8mo
BarbaraBB I enjoyed Hour of the Star too! 8mo

I have read several Wells books & loved all of them. My favorite however has always been Island of Dr. Moreau. The descriptions of the heat on the island has always stuck with me. It has been a few years since I have read Wells. I think I'm def. due to read some.

dabbe I've read quite a few but never this one. #stacked! 🤩🤗😀 8mo
vivastory @dabbe I'll be curious to see what you think! I remember it being a fairly short read, but it has really stuck with me years later 8mo
dabbe @vivastory I'll let you know! I've only read THE TIME MACHINE and THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, so I definitely need to read more of him. 8mo

The Go-Between | L.P. Hartley
post image

This is such a delightful book. I read this one with my NYRB Classic group & the summer atmosphere of the book will stay with you long after you finish. I am not a huge fan of summer weather in general, but Hartley managed to capture the gentler side of summertime even though the narrative is not a happy one. It has an iconic opener:
“The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.”

Cuilin One of my all time favorites ❤️ 8mo
dabbe @Cuilin #minetoo! ❤️ It reminds me of ATONEMENT as well. Or should I say ATONEMENT reminds me of this book since this one came first. (edited) 8mo
dabbe That first line is astounding. 🤩 8mo

Leftcoastzen So lovely,that book. 8mo
vivastory @Cuilin @dabbe I was pleasantly surprised by it. It was quite a bit different from what I was expecting! 8mo
vivastory @Leftcoastzen Agreed! I was looking at the Valancourt site recently & was surprised to see that Hartley wrote a dystopia that they reissued a couple of years ago 8mo
Leftcoastzen 🤔 hhmmm , interesting! 8mo
Cuilin @vivastory he manages to get a child‘s voice perfectly. I also read, though it wasn‘t as good 8mo
Cuilin @dabbe love Atonement I think it‘s rare that an author gets a child‘s voice, right. 8mo
vivastory @Cuilin Thanks for your input on Eustace etc. I was actually looking at it yesterday & wondering if I should add it to my TBR 8mo
Cuilin @vivastory I enjoyed it. Eustace himself is quite endearing. 8mo

Dune | Frank Herbert
post image

A modern sci-fi classic with two recent phenomenal adaptations. Largely set on the desert planet Arrakis, The Stillsuits worn by the inhabitants of Arrakis inevitably make me think of summer temperatures, made only more unbearable the past few years due to record breaking summers due to climate change.

I have the sneaking suspicion that a lot of French people feel about Sagan's novella the way a lot of American readers now feel about On the Road: either a rite of passage, not worthwhile &/or cliché. I do recall enjoying this one & being surprised by some of the darker elements in what I thought would have been a really charming read. A good beach read that will stick with you for a bit.
#ClassicSummer2024 Book 2

Ruthiella Definitely darker than I expected as well. 8mo

The Stranger | Albert Camus
post image

Lately I have seen several articles/video recommendations of 10 summer books, so I thought I would make a list of classic books that have a summer environment, or make me think of summer. Starting with the quintessential Camus, I have read this one twice now & the oppressive atmosphere stuck with me after both readings The sparse prose is evocative in depicting Meursault's indifference,
