Unthinkable
Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy | Jamie Raskin
19 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 14 to read
In this searing memoir, Congressman Jamie Raskin tells the story of the forty-five days at the start of 2021 that permanently changed his lifeand his familysas he confronted the painful loss of his son to suicide, lived through the violent insurrection in our nations Capitol, and led the impeachment effort to hold President Trump accountable for inciting the political violence. On December 31, 2020, Tommy Raskin, the only son of Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin, tragically took his own life after a long struggle with depression. Seven days later on January 6, Congressman Raskin returned to Congress to help certify the 2020 Presidential election results, when violent insurrectionists led by right wing extremist groups stormed the U.S. Capitol hoping to hand four more years of power to President Donald Trump. As our reeling nation mourned the deaths of numerous people and lamented the injuries of more than 140 police officers hurt in the attack, Congressman Raskin, a Constitutional law professor, was called upon to put aside his overwhelming griefboth personal and professionaland lead the impeachment effort against President Trump for inciting the violence. Together this nine-member team of House impeachment managers riveted a nation still in anguish, putting on an unprecedented Senate trial that produced the most bipartisan Presidential impeachment vote in American history. Now for the first time, Congressman Raskin discusses this unimaginable convergence of personal and public trauma, detailing how the painful loss of his son and the power of Tommys convictions fueled the Congressmans work in the aftermath of modern democracys darkest day. Going inside Congress on January 6, he recounts the horror of that day, a day that he and other Democrats had spent months preparing for under the correct assumption that they would encounter an attempted electoral coupnot against a President but for one. And yet, on January 6, he faced the one thing he had failed to anticipate: mass political violence designed to block Bidens election. With an inside account of leading the team prosecuting President Trump in the Senate, Congressman Raskin shares never before told stories of just how close we came to losing our democracy that fateful day and lays out the methodical prosecution that convinced Democrats and Republicans alike of Trumps responsibility for inciting insurrectionary violence against our government. Through it all, he reckons with the loss of his brilliant, remarkable son, a Harvard Law student whose values and memory continually inspired the Congressman to confront the dark impulses unleashed by Donald Trump. At turns, a moving story of a father coping with his pain and a revealing examination of holding President Trump accountable for the violence he fomented, this book is a vital reminder of the ongoing struggle for the soul of American democracy and the perseverance that our Constitution demands from us all.

My last NONFICTION read of January was also my favorite for #2024ReadingBrackets. Jamie Raskin writes beautifully about his sorrow over the death of his son by suicide and Trump‘s attempted coup against our country —both of which happened within the same week. He tells the story of how these two disparate events collided and merged in his personal and professional life. Highly recommend.

Wonderful narrative by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) as he recounts the week between 12/31/20 (when he lost his son to suicide) and 1/6/21 (when Trump incited his supporters to attempt an insurrection to stop Biden‘s election win from being certified). As Raskin details his subsequent role as impeachment manager, he (like Orwell) discusses the role of truth and facts within societies and how they can be manipulated by a demagogue.

Powerful and difficult to read at times, this #chunkster intertwines the author‘s loss of his son to suicide with the painful truth of the events on January 6th. Representative Raskin‘s unflinching and personal story is heartbreaking; moving to learn of his special relationship with his son, how he battled depression and how the love for his son encouraged his search for truth and justice when home grown terrorists attacked our Capital.

In terms of nonfiction, I‘m calling this a #topread2022 and it‘s also the book that took place closest to me.

I live about twenty miles from the Capitol and maybe ten miles from the edge of Rep. Raskin‘s district. About half the books I read took place in the US.

On the other end of the spectrum, I read a couple books that featured action on extraterrestrial colonies, but the farthest away on Earth took place in New Zealand.🔽

The January 6th Committee held its final session today, with video footage of Speaker Pelosi calmly leading under pressure, and ending with the unanimous vote to subpoena the disgraced, twice-impeached former POTUS.

Of all those who‘ve stood up against the authoritarianism and treasonous actions of Trump, Jamie Raskin has impressed me most. He‘s been a rock and all after losing his son Tommy to suicide. I have much respect for him.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Agreed. His part of the hearings always feels more emotional to me. 2y

It‘s not uncommon to find yourself walking a path you never wanted. Every parent dreads the idea of a child dying. And we don‘t want to see political upheaval and violence in our countries. Yet, Congressman Ruskin experienced both in the last days of 2020 and on Jan 6, 2021. His well-done story of his experience is intense and heart breaking on multiple levels. 4.5/5 stars

Absolutely required reading. I‘ve read a ton of books about 2020 and the election and this one provided fresh and illuminating insight into much of the details - and made it clear how close this country came to disaster. Raskin writes with eloquent fury, and his memories and meditations about his beloved son Tommy, who took his own life a week before the insurrection, are beautiful and deeply moving. Highly, highly recommended.

In short, I wholeheartedly recommend this, especially as an audiobook.
It‘s his account of the loss of his son to suicide; the Insurrection; and his work as Lead Impeachment Manager - 3 events that happened in quick succession.

Raskin has restored a portion of my faith in humanity, and I need that so. He is an American treasure, and a blessing to us all.

AmyG I agree with @Amiable. How he dealt with all of this and his son‘s suicide....I can‘t imagine. We are very lucky to have him on the Jan 6 committee and in Congress. 3y
