I devoured this book. Quite literally couldn't stop reading it. A trans boy living in a dystopian society terrorize by an evangelical eco-fascist cult called The Angels is being turned into an instrument of destruction-- but when he runs away he realizes he gets to choose whose destruction be becomes. The body horror in this book fits so horrifyingly perfectly. I feel like I could gush about Hell Followed With Us for ages.
Rainy day reading withmy girl 📚
5/5 ⭐
Even in a post apocalyptic world, people need to be accepted and loved not in spite, but because of who they are.
"I wanted to show queer kids that they can walk through hell and come out alive. Maybe not in one piece, maybe forever changed, but alive and worthy of love all the same."
I can't wait to read more from Andrew Joseph White, he's quickly become one of my favorite authors.
I was drawn in by the cover, but this debut novel is a stunning and angry rhetoric on anti-trans legislation, and religious trauma. It‘s not for the faint of heart but as the back cover quote from NYT states: it is a long, sustained scream. This book will stay with me.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Pride read #2
I think this did a lot to heal my religious trauma. It was so easy to empathize with Benji, having grown up in the church. A good read for those that can handle body horror and love autistic and LGBTQIA2S+ representation. :)
Spent the day cleaning! I‘m also getting rid of a bunch of books since I‘m moving from VA to Alaska in October 😁😁😁
Somehow my husband is always worse at not buying books than I am 😆 he was excited to show me his new acquisition and the New York Times quote on the back, and I was delighted to see that his new shelf decor piece is a book I‘ve been wanting to read! #LGBTQ #BookishPartner #BookHaul?
This is, unequivocally, the best book I've ever read! The prose is constructed into an exquisite nightmare, stomach churning gore, & then into beautiful tenderness. Benji, a queer trans-boy, escapes the clutches of his oppressors with a bioweapon that was meant for the heretics in this near-dystopian world ravaged by religious terrorists & martyrs, but the ALC, a community of queer teenagers, will fight to the bitter end for the right to grow up.
#TransRightsReadathon book 3! Religious trauma, trans rage, & teen romance await in this tender & gruesome horror novel. In a disturbing near-future, with the help of a band of young queer survivors, transboy Benji escapes the eco-Christo-fascist cult that raised him (& brought about the apocalypse), but not before being injected with a bioweapon that will transform him—but hey, if they make you into a monster, you might as well unleash yourself.
“His throat bobs.”
It‘s one of the most unusual books I‘ve ever read. It‘s an insane story about an insane subject that‘s known as evangelical Christianity.
@Marmie7 Thanks for picking this book. Besides the last 1/5th slowing down I thought it was great. @Michael_Gee sorry it‘s late but it‘ll be in the mail to you Monday. @shortsarahrose thanks again for the bookmark. He‘s been with me through all the this year‘s reads so far. Every time I start a new book I ask myself where‘s Steve. @Centique Pew won‘t stop talking to me. In this dystopian future where this religious cult has killed billions of 👇🏼
This dystopic story is about Benji, a trans youth who finds himself in the center of Evangelical rule at the end of the world. Able to escape with the help of a loved one, Benji learns what it means to be true to yourself when so many people believe you are something else.
I do feel like I need to include a trigger warning. This book is intense at times and has a lot of difficulty topics.

This dystopian horror packs quite a punch. There's a lot within this gruesome story that points out social injustices in our culture in regards to evangelical Christians and the LGBTQ+ community. A group of religious fanatics set out to create a monster in order to gain control, but what happens when that monster develops a mind of his own? What happens when the hunted becomes the hunter? ⬇⬇⬇
I‘ve said it before but it bears repeating… Having friends is great, having a love of reading is great, but having friends who share your love of reading is the best! 😊 Thank you so much @Branwen for this generous early Christmas present! I‘m so grateful for all these great books and the Mighty Thor figure, but I‘m especially grateful to have a wonderful friend like you in my life! 😀
“I‘ve taken what they‘ve given me and turned it into a mockery of them. I will turn it into what destroys them.
If they wanted me to be a monster one step closer to God, that‘s fine. In what world was their God ever a benevolent one?”
I don‘t know what I expected from this book but I really liked it! All the characters and representation is amazing. This book is Armageddon meets religious trauma, absolutely would recommend
Love!!!! A trans boy infected with a bio weapon by a fundamentalist cult to start Armageddon?! It was very good!
I have to work tomorrow, but that's not stopping me from staying up waaaaay too late to keep reading! 💕📚💕 So far, this book deserves all the hype it's been getting. Queer young people trying to save what's left of the world after a crazy religious cult brought it to ruin. Scary stuff...but indeed awesome!
Do NOT read this book if you‘re squeamish. It‘s very, very gory.
I really liked it though! This was such a good, unique read, and though I‘m not sure if I‘ll ever read it again, it‘s earned its place on my shelf. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
I wasn't planning on starting this next, but a coworker just told me how AMAZING it is which made me bump it up on my tbr list! 😁
I‘m a bit obsessed with this cover! But the book is also awesome!
