Olympic Dream: The Story of Samia Yusuf Omar
Olympic Dream: The Story of Samia Yusuf Omar | Reinhard Kleist
6 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
The image of Samia Yusuf Omar running for last place at the 2008 Beijing Olympics will forever be imprinted in the minds of all who saw it: The lean Somalian, wearing knee-length leggings and a baggy T-shirt, came in seconds behind her competitors. What the cheering crowd couldn t know then was what it took to get there. "An Olympic Dream "follows Omar s second attempt to represent her country at the Olympics, this time in London. Reinhard Kleist pictures the athlete training in one of the most dangerous cities in the world; her passage through Sudan and into Libya; and her fateful attempt to reach Europe. By telling the story of one remarkable woman, Kleist gives voice to the thousands of migrants who risk their lives daily for a better future."

Good morning from under my new heated fuzzy blanket mom got me for Xmas 😭😭😭😭 reading all the manga and catching up on some graphic novels today. What graphic novels or comics are you reading right now? ❄️

Cinfhen Love heated blankets 💟 6y
gradcat The only graphic novel I‘ve ever read is the tagged one. Isn‘t that pathetic?! 6y
queerbookreader @gradcat Not at all!! That's a great one to read! 6y

Turns out I can do one round of #LitsyAtoZ title track choosing from just the books in our bedroom -- all I couldn't find was a book starting with X and with Q (though I did find an Anna Quindlen novel). #abecedarianTBR

MallenNC I also have Lab Girl and Hidden Figures on my AtoZ list. I'm excited for this challenge because I think I will finally make some TBR progress! 8y
Peddler410 I need to revisit my list! 8y
Sisenegger I love the challenge, but thought about switching it up a little and doing AtoZ locations instead of titles. 8y
BookishMarginalia @Sisenegger That sounds interesting... and challenging! Keep us posted on your progress! 8y
Librariana I love it!! Isn't it awesome to see them like this all laid out? 😊 I still need an X book, but for the letter Q, I did buy 8y
kspenmoll Need to work on this- maybe as I go along although "best laid plans" can always change! 8y
Sisenegger @BookishMarginalia Is it okay with you if I still use the hashtag? 8y
Daisydo I need a u and x. :) 8y
BookishMarginalia @Sisenegger Of course! I'm looking forward to seeing what you read! 8y
DianeC I need a z and an x 8y
Readerann I recommend 'X' by Sue Grafton. 8y
SaraBeagle Same here! I had everything but the X. It'll be nice to knock the other 25 off my TBR shelf. 8y
DianeC Read x by sue grafton already. Love that whole series 8y

I picked this book to read about a refugee story. With all hose tragedies of refugees trying to cross the Mediterranean it is easy to forget that each one of them has their own unique story.

Graphic novel. Great story well told. A very interesting tale I knew very little about.

This seems particularly appropriate (and heartbreaking) right now. Of course it had to come home with me! #Olympics #refugees
