Manfried the Man
Manfried the Man: A Graphic Novel | Caitlin Major
12 posts | 16 read | 18 to read
In a world where humanoid cat people keep cute little humans as pets, average cat-guy Steve Catson relies on his lazy, testy, slovenly pet man Manfried to get him through heartaches, tribulations, and challenges of being single, underemployed, and lonely. It's like a Garfield comic strip in reverse! In the world of Manfried the Man, the roles of cats and humans are reversed: humanoid cats are in charge, while tiny, dim-witted, lovable little people are kept as pets. Manfried, a stray man taken in by slacker Steve Catson, becomes the Garfield to his John Arbuckle: lazy, selfish, and sometimes maddening in his weird human behavior. But ultimately the pair depend on each other to get through life's troubles. In this book-length story, Steve find himself stuck with a dead-end job and nonexistent love-life, while all his friends are moving on, getting better jobs, getting married and having kittens. When Manfried runs away from home, Steve suddenly loses the one constant in his life, and has to muster all his meager resources to find his best friend and bring him home safe. By story's end both Steve and Manfried realize they're capable of so much more than they thought.

Bailedbailed

Bailing after the first chapter. It would have probably been cute as a web comic, but trying to stretch it into a full narrative story is just meh. Also, the scale and proportions seem inconsistent. And it is weird that the cats have human limbs and only sometimes wear clothes. I dunno, I'm not feeling this one.

Mehso-so

A graphic novel that imagines a world where large cats keep tiny humans as pets.

A world where giant cats keep tiny men as pets. This slice-of-life extended gag wouldn‘t have worked as well without the appealing main characters: Steve, a slob who gets teased by other cats for his obsession with men, and his adorable/annoying pet, Manfried. It wouldn‘t work at all if there were any human women pets, because the nudity would start looking pornographic in that case. An adorable #comics collection that began on the web.

Weaponxgirl This looks amazing 6y
Lindy @Weaponxgirl It‘s pretty funny. 😁 6y
Weaponxgirl I‘ve been seeing how much it is so probably my first buy on my next payday 6y

Lindy @Weaponxgirl Do you have access to a public library? It‘s the perfect place for cash-strapped readers. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Lindy I couldn‘t see it there and tbh this is one I know I want to share with my friends in a shoving it in their faces way. I do normally try them as one of my first ports of call 6y
Lindy @Weaponxgirl I understand the shove-it-their-faces impulse. I‘m forever proselytizing books. 😉 6y

A common scenario, if cat and human roles were reversed. I love how the only sound that the human pets make is “hey.”

This series of cartoons with giant cats keeping men as pets is pretty funny. I‘m accidentally on my second time through because I was preparing to review it and one page led to another. #catsofLitsy

suzisteffen This is hilarious and too real. 6y
Lindy @suzisteffen Yep. It rings true through-out. 6y

As a cat owner a lot of the story reminded me of the things I've gone through with my cat. Because of that I thought the plot wasn't super original but it was cute.

Love it when you find a signed copy of something on your TBR. Cats? Yes please!

I did not care for this graphic novel. The premise was cute, cats have pet men. But the joke got old fast. Then it was just a sort of boring story about a man who acts like a cat and a cat who acts like a man.

Every panel tells the story of this perfect role swap between cat and man, and it‘s a total laugh. The story, the illustrations... It‘s all brilliant!

So, if you read only one graphic novel this year, read this book!
