A centuries-long peace is shattered in a matriarchal society when a decade passes without a single girl being born in this sweeping epic fantasy thats perfect for fans of Robin Hobb and Circe. Five hundred years of peace between queendoms shatters when girls inexplicably stop being born. As the Drought of Girls stretches across a generation, it sets off a cascade of political and personal consequences across all five queendoms of the known world, throwing long-standing alliances into disarray as each queendom begins to turn on each otherand new threats to each nation rise from within. Uniting the stories of women from across the queendoms, this propulsive, gripping epic fantasy follows a warrior queen who must rise from childbirth bed to fight for her life and her throne, a healer in hiding desperate to protect the secret of her daughters explosive power, a queen whose desperation to retain control leads her to risk using the darkest magic, a near-immortal sorcerer demigod powerful enough to remake the world for her own endsand the generation of lastborn girls, the ones born just before the Drought, who must bear the hopes and traditions of their nations if the queendoms are to survive.

Happy new year!!

I'm coming out of the reading slump I've been in since September and I'm excited for my reading plans in 2024. But a quick 2023 wrap-up first: I did pretty good on #BookSpin, only missing 4. #roll100 on the other hand, I only read 3 all year... Oh well! Looking forward to both challenges this year

@TheAromaofBooks @PuddleJumper

Ruthiella Happy New Year to you! 🥳 11mo
llwheeler @Ruthiella thank you, same to you! 11mo

Cover A+, set up C-, story of this matriarchal world where 5 queens rule with women being the protectors and men are subpar. This jumped ahead so fast in places that I had trouble remembering who was doing what. Ending for me was just too predictable. Thinking that I like much more dialogue once I know the setup of a new world. Not excited to read the 2nd, 🥴. I think this has a great story but the delivery is off for me.

julesG So it might not just have been me and my adversity to epic fantasy. 🤔 1y

It's me. I don't have the patience for an epic fantasy novel.

I liked the matriarchal world, but see above.

I bailed, but that would mean the book is marked down which would be a disservice to a the book.

#SeriesLove2023 @TheSpineView @Andrew65

TrishB Whereas I think this sounds great! 2y
julesG @TrishB Give it a try. 2y
lynneamch True that epic fantasy may not be everyone's jam, and sometimes it's just not the right time for the investment. But, this matriarchal world drew me in and made me a fan. Loved it and 2y
TheSpineView Bummer but great job on finishing 2y
Kboltz I was going to bail but thought maybe it would redeem itself…nope. 1y

The first in an epic fantasy series, and I‘m not sure how many books are planned. The world is matriarchal, and there are 5 queendoms who have been at peace for 500 years. Then baby girls stop being born. No one is sure why, but discord is sown.

There are a lot of characters, and that made it hard for me to be too invested in any of them. But I enjoyed the story and will definitely continue with the next book when it‘s released in the spring.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I just got the next book on NetGalley. Normally I wait to read until the release date is closer. But, in this case, I started reading already. Scorpica was so awesome! 2y

My favorite panel of the day was with GR Macallister and Rebecca Roanhorse. I haven‘t read either of these books yet, but I‘m looking forward to them.

Hooked_on_books I didn‘t know GM had written a fantasy book! Her Litsy posts are lovely—she definitely makes an effort to elevate other female authors, and I love that. 2y

Fascinating matriarchal world with magicians, warriors, queens, temples & the Daybreak #Palace that "gleamed golden, its sandstone curves and columns hewn from the smooth mountainside, its spires and arches soaring. Its front gate loomed in shadow." An awesome start to a new series about five Queendoms… the ladies are ruling the world, and it‘s a messy, complicated, magical, thrilling place, thrown into chaos when girls suddenly stop being born. Lots of interesting characters and drama, great writing and world building, and I‘m very much looking forward to the next book. @theladygreer never disappoints, but this is something special.

Serendipity! How could I NOT order the "Long Live the Queen" specialty drink to sip while reading about the Five Queendoms in Scorpica? "A strong blend of Queen of Berries fruit tisane and elderberries, sweetened with antioxidant-rich local honey and Vitamin C." Love the creative staff at the Copper Kettle Teabar and this author @theladygreer

Imagine a 500-yr. matriarchy but women stop having female babies. Women are the crux of this society and not having another generation destabilizes everything. Scorpica is world-building, fabulous intrigue and plotting, and characters I‘m dying to read about for another decade or more. Divine epic fantasy!!

Book 1 of the Five Queendoms series
An amazing story of a world run by women. Political intrigue times 5, queens trying to keep power and lead their people, while still working together as well.

lynneamch So good. Lucky to read an advance copy. Official pub date 2/22/22 and for those who watch Freinds & Fiction, she'll be on the aftershow on 2/23/22. 3y
