Seven Kinds of People You Find in Bookshops
Seven Kinds of People You Find in Bookshops | Shaun Bythell
23 posts | 17 read | 37 to read
A wickedly witty field guide to bookstore customers from the Person Who Doesn't Know What They Want (But Thinks It Might Have a Blue Cover) to the harried Parents Secretly After Free Childcare. It does take all kinds. If you visit bookshops more often than the grocery store, you'll recognize the types. There's the Expert (with subspecies from the Bore to the Helpful Person), the Young Family (ranging from the Exhausted to the Aspirational), Occultists (from Conspiracy Theorist to Craft Woman). Then there's the Loiterer (including the Erotica Browser and the Self-Published Author), the Bearded Pensioner (including the Lyrca Clad), the The Not-So-Silent Traveller (the Whistler, Sniffer, Hummer, Farter, and Tutter), and the Family Historian (generally Americans who come to Shaun's shop in Wigtown, Scotland). Two bonus sections include Staff and, finally, Perfect Customer -- all from Shaun Bythell (author of Confessions of a Bookseller), the funniest sell-and-tell observer in the house of books. This is the perfect read for anyone who ever felt a bookstore was home. You've been spotted! Or have you?

Seemed to me a little mean spirited and patronizing, but there were some good insights and interesting conclusions.
I am still very interested in The Diary of a Bookseller and Confessions of a Bookseller :)

I really enjoyed this and it‘s a quick read. I‘m not sure which type of bookshop person I am though

Very short, mildly humorous caricatures, better suited to a series of magazine articles or blog posts than a book.

All I can say is this book was a complete disappointment. Its only saving grace is that the author apologizes for all the nasty things he says about people. I can take a joke, but this was just bad writing, in my opinion.

I hate saying negative things about books, but this one just just bring on my nerves. It's a very small book, so I will the entire thing, but something about the author rubs me the wrong way. The book is just filled with him making observations and even making fun of his bookstore patrons. I was looking for a funny read, but not at the expense of some innocent people who are just being themselves. Shame. #humor #notfunny

The tagged is about book store customers and the Quiet Please book@is about the wild and peculiar things observed in a library - both are hilarious 😆

This was a fun quick read. We have either probably met the people described here or have some in among our family and friends. Would recommend as a first non-fiction read, or as a break between books.

⭐: 4.75

I liked this short and amusing book. Shaun is still grumpy but does reveal a softer side in places. I hope I fall under the « normal people » classification ?

Shaun describes the Poldark books as getting an unexpected revival « following a BBC production of the series made famous by the actor Aidan Turner removing his shirt several times during each episode. » ????

rubyslippersreads I actually own a beautiful vintage Jeffrey Farnol book that belonged to my mom. 3y
rabbitprincess @rubyslippersreads This book was the first time I‘d heard of him! How lovely to have a vintage edition that belonged to your mom 😊 3y

My work book club is meeting on Monday to discuss this very slim book. I found it riotously funny but I am a notorious cranky ass. Place your bets now for how many times my colleagues make reference to this during our discussion.

LeahBergen Ha! I love his cranky humour but he seems to rub some people the wrong way. 3y
Bookzombie Can I start with this one or should I read this one first? 3y
MicheleinPhilly @LeahBergen Maybe it‘s a grumpy Scorpio thing. 3y
MicheleinPhilly @Bookzombie I haven‘t read any others by him but I think you can read them in any order. 3y
Bookzombie @MicheleinPhilly Okay, thanks! 3y

I rarely pick pan as my rating but this one really didn't do it for me. I found it long winded, a bit boring and unkind. Not sure if the author was trying to be funny and I didn't get it.

Eva_B I‘ve read his book ‘Diary of a Bookseller‘ which I quite enjoyed. He does have a very dry and sarcastic sense of humour. He comes across as quite grumpy too! 😊 3y
Victoria_Clyne @Eva2 I definitely picked up the grumpy side. 3y

Fun, quick, short and sweet. I may or may not have found myself relating to some of the bookshop patrons described inside. Very much a comfort read. I felt like I was sitting inside a bookstore in Scotland with the author (who is mildly grumpy I‘d say) watching the people he describes walking in and out the door. Haven‘t read the author‘s previous works but I‘ll be adding them to my list now. #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

Not feeling the greatest at the moment. Haven‘t been anywhere to catch anything so I think the stress is finally catching up with me. So I am going to snuggle up in blankets with my dogs and try to get some reading in. This seems like a good distraction for the time being.

charl08 Hope the relaxing does the trick! 4y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

I‘ve been reading the tagged book this afternoon and heartily enjoying myself (even though I think I see a bit of myself in some of these types 😆).

I love this author‘s cranky, snarky humour; he‘s the owner of the biggest bookshop in Wigtown (Scotland‘s book town, which I WILL visit one day!).

TrishB I shall get there one day too! 4y
Andrea313 I can't wait to read this! I was planning for a trip to Wigtown in 2022...but I guess we'll see! Stacking this in preparation for whenever the trip comes. ❤️ 4y
MsMelissa Those are lovely! 4y

Ruthiella I too will make it to Wigtown some day! Also Haye on Wye! 😀 4y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira I have the tag one on my December reading list. I hope I can get to it 🤞🏻It will be my first read by that author 🙂 4y
Hooked_on_books I loved Diary of a Bookseller! Such great snark. I‘ve been to Wigtown—it‘s great! I recommend going during their book festival. If you book far enough in advance (we did not), you can actually stay at one of the shops and be a proprietor for a day! 4y
erzascarletbookgasm I just saw this the other day! It sounds interesting! In the end, I got another book instead, because I have not read his other two books. 4y
erzascarletbookgasm And Wigtown of course is on my #bucketlist ! 4y
Cathythoughts Great covers ❤️ 4y
janeycanuck My sister and I did the Bookshop AirBnB in Wigtown. It was so much fun. Shaun‘s store is amazing! (edited) 4y
Amiable On my bucket list as well! 4y
LeahBergen @TrishB I‘ll meet ya there. 😉 4y
LeahBergen @Andrea313 Here‘s hoping that you still make it! 🤞🏻 4y
LeahBergen @Book_Fiend_Melissa I do like these covers! 4y
LeahBergen @Ruthiella I‘ve made it to Hay on Wye (and need to go back 😆). 4y
LeahBergen @Josee.a.lu.lit.et.lira The first one is a really fun read. 😊 4y
LeahBergen @Hooked_on_books Lucky you! I so want to do that! ❤️ 4y
LeahBergen @erzascarletbookgasm We‘ll all have to meet there. 😆 4y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Aren‘t they? 😘 4y
LeahBergen @janeycanuck Oh, did you?? Lucky you! 😍😍 4y
LeahBergen @Amiable Let‘s all go! 😆 4y
Amiable @LeahBergen Road trip! I‘ll pack the snacks. 😀 4y
saresmoore I don‘t mean to be pushy, but are you doing a book tree this year? I may or may not have signed on to Litsy just to check. 😆 4y
LeahBergen @saresmoore 😂😂 Yes, I think I‘m just going to do a small one this year as we won‘t be entertaining at all. You‘re very kind to ask! 😂😂 4y
catebutler I‘m reading Diary right now, and I have cried with laughter at some of the entries. He is so funny, albeit brutal!! 🤣 4y
