A quick YA page turner written in verse takes us into the private life of a young teenage girl. In the span of one summer, she questions her LDS upbringing, discovers her body, lust, and love. All this while trying to survive her abusive father and discovering family love and encouragement from an aunt for the first time. TW/CW: suicide, abuse, purity culture, pregnancy loss. Shown: the fundamentalist churches I grew up in. I am now atheist.

From the book I‘m currently reading. I don‘t come from an LDS family, but I still come from a fundamentalist one. And I can completely relate to this feeling.

My body is my own. It belongs to no one; neither do I. I am not property. What my body can do does not equal capital for anyone.

Decided to try Ellen Hopkins again and I was hooked by this story. Starting the sequel tomorrow called “Smoke”. A novel-in-verse about a Latter Day Saints‘ teen‘s life with numerous siblings, an ineffective mom and an alcoholic abusive dad.

Apparently I am now on an Ellen Hopkins kick. Just finished Burned. It was a good book, but not my favorite by her. This one was a little predictable. Still a good read though!

This young adult novel in verse started off a little slow to me but then it picked up and I couldn‘t put it down the last 150 pages. I‘m looking forward to reading the sequel to find out what happens to Pattyn.

Ellen Hopkin's Burned presents Pattyn Von Stratton's physical and emotional hardships with her alcoholic Mormon father, while enduring the psychological restraints as a young woman living in her community. After Pattyn's father finds her in a compromising position with a guy, and he sends her to stay with her aunt, where she experiences true love and sex, and rediscovering yourself, regardless of gender and religion.

Live your life right, Pattyn. Love with all your heart. Don't hurt others, and help those in need. That's all you need to know. And don't worry about Heaven. If it exists, you'll be welcome.

I was never big on cowboy flicks, but watching Ethan command that big horse was far the sexiest I had ever seen.

We believed the people we voted into power truly represented our interests. Some still believe that, despite all evidence to the contrary.

And in a moment of clarity, I understood that while killing for meat can be tolerated, killing for passion might very well be easier.

Would I find forever love? Did I really want to, when forever was a word with meaning?

Real love finds you once, if you're lucky.

Has Dad's demons claimed her soul? Or was this, as well, a woman's role?

I found this book in my book collection, and since I just read Jason Reynold's A Long Way Down, I decided to start reading this one today.

Lost interest so fast. I don't think I have ever DNFed a book so quickly...

This was another solid choice from Ellen Hopkins. I‘m quite the fan so I cannot imagine ever leaving a negative review.

Unfortunately now I have reached the point where I compare her works of literature and was this her best? No.

But this was much, much better than some other pieces of fiction I have read!

Again, I love the format and style.

Love this author so much.

Just look at that writing style and prose -

“She looked as if she might disappear.”

Read between the lines.

Ellen Hopkins will always be my true #1, but aside from her my “favourite” authors can really fluctuate depending on what I‘m into at the moment. These are some of my current favourite female authors. #MyTop5 @4thhouseontheleft

LOVE LOVE LOVE this book!!!

This book was pretty good. i thought it was a little slow after she moved to her aunts house, but then it got better, with twists and turns. honestly i would recommend this book but it‘s not one of her best books.

This is an amazing story of religion, love, loss, and just life in general. I absolutely love Ellen Hopkins, I have never gotten tired of reading and rereading her books. This is the third time I‘ve read this book, and I‘m sure I‘ll read it again in the future.

Re-Reading a book by one of my favorite authors.

Who doesn't love ellen hopkins?! This book was deep. With the abuse i can relate to. I felt like i couldnt put this book down and finished it in hours. It was amazing.

If I was held at gunpoint and had to choose my ONE favourite book from Ellen Hopkins, I would have to say Burned. Though I truly believe everyone should read them all, if I could only suggest one, it would be this.

I'm not a huge fan of writing in verse, so this one was a little iffy for me, but the story was enjoyable and I really felt bad for the main character. However, the ending was a little...off, so I couldn't enjoy it fully.

I love the verse writing. Very intrigued to read more Ellen Hopkins now.
