The Best of Me
The Best of Me | David Sedaris
A lavish gift edition of David Sedaris's best stories, spanning his spectacular bestselling career. Hand-picked by David himself, these are stories that will make you laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time, from "the funniest man alive" (Time Out New York). What could be a more tempting holiday gift than a compendium of David Sedaris's best stories, selected by the author himself? From a spectacular career spanning almost three decades, these stories have become modern classics and are now for the first time collected in one volume. The collection will also feature an introduction by the author and a never-before-collected story.

The stories written later in his life felt wiser, maybe because he‘d had more time to reflect on it all, especially the ones about his family. I don‘t have much more to say about this guy. Probably my absolute favorite now. His family reminds me too much of my own to not enjoy his work. So funny and touching

It took a little while - this starts with some early writing which had dated somewhat - but I now understand completely why Sedaris is so loved. I played some favourites (You Can‘t Kill the Rooster, Laugh Kookaburra, Six to Eight Black Men, Standing By) for Polly and Luke on our journey to Timbertop and they too enjoyed it. Recommend for a road trip with teens (but language warning and maybe skip the taxi driver!)

Sedaris may not have worked in front of audiences in 2020, but he did manage to publish this excellent compilation of essays and short stories. I‘m the only person in the universe who hasn‘t read him before. But now I have the whole Sedaris catalog to anticipate! Thanks to my IRL book group for picking this one.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I just love David Sedaris. I‘ve read/listened to most of what he‘s published, and so recognized several of the essay in here, but was just as enthralled as the first time I heard them. I don‘t enjoy his fiction/fables as much as the essays but they‘re still so cleverly written. And I really love the essays, especially the ones about his family, and he ended with some great ones. Looking forward to Carnival Snackery!

When David reflects on his childhood and family there is nothing funnier or more heartfelt. I highly recommend this audio as David‘s narration was perfection. So many laughs and a few tears, too.

David Sedaris knocks it out of the park once again.

The majority of this book I LOVED.

The essays I didn't like, I really didn't like.

But, as always, the good far outweighs the bad.

And you really should be listening to David read his books. What a treat 😊

I‘ve read everything Sedaris has ever written, so none of this was new to me. I wholeheartedly endorse his picks for this Best of Me collection. It‘s a really perfect selection - favorites like 6 to 8 Black Men and Me Talk Pretty One Day alongside the amazing stories of his family, both happy and sad. You see his growth as a writer and his penchant for dark humor. The audiobook version is a must have for the diehard Sedaris fan.

Not all of Sedaris‘ essays have aged well. A few of the essays are 5 stars—the painfully honest ones about his family and himself. A few were 1 stars, the ones where he is a tone deaf southern white man making jokes about race. Just not funny. I don‘t think humor has to be “politically correct”—I‘m a big fan of Sarah Silverman and Sachs Baron Cohen—but it does need to be self-aware.

SamAnne At the end is an interview with Sedaris which is good. But he is asked about how he felt some of his essays had aged over the years and if that played into which ones he chose for this compilation. Yes, he said there were essays he didn‘t put in for that fact. But then he thought a couple of these did pass the grade? And he makes some comment that what is considered “okay” to make jokes about goes in trends. Disappointing answer. 4y

It‘s interesting to see the essays and stories David chose to include in this retrospective collection. The majority are from his adult life, not the childhood stories from his early books. An excellent selection of previously published pieces, some hilarious, some touching, all of them read with the author‘s perfect comedic timing. I especially enjoyed the stories about his family: he makes it clear how much he enjoys the company of his remaining siblings. His last interaction with his sister Tiffany is heartbreaking. Even though I had encountered most of the stories before, it‘s like listening to good songs again. #LGBT #audiobook

I‘m ridiculously happy I learned about The Story Graph and switched. It has really bothered my that goodreads is Amazon owned. I love libro.fm and find their customer service to be excellent. And I love shopping in Indie bookstores.

Prairiegirl_reading Same! I haven‘t fully switched over to the storygraph because they haven‘t added the progress part (which I really want) so using both at the moment but I really like it and I will switch over completely once that part is added. 4y
OutAndAbout I‘ve been looking at Storygraph but I don‘t understand the pricing. Did you pay for it or are you intending to stay on the free version? 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I finally exported my Goodreads library to StoryGraph and can say with confidence that once it‘s out of beta, I will be switching over completely. I listened to this on Audible and it was wonderful, just as all of Mr Sedaris‘s books are when he reads them. The thing I particularly love about this book is that it is a collection of what he considers his best work. Some of them where favorites of mine and others surprised me that he considered them among his best. The Audible version ends with an hour long interview conducted by Paul Constant. Absolutely recommend for fans of Mr. Sedaris.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sedaris hand-selected this collection, so it‘s his opinion of “best.” I agree with many, but would‘ve likely nixed the fiction. His short stories are decent, but he is such a master of the personal essay. That said, this was just what I needed right now! There‘s an insightful interview at the end of the audiobook (brilliantly narrated as usual). Naturally, I needed a physical copy, too. It‘s beautiful!

I love listening to Sedaris read his stories. He‘s such a good storyteller and humorist. While avid fans like me have likely read most of the stories within, I still enjoyed it. The chronology also puts on display how he has matured as a writer, with increasing depth over time, with touches of sorrow and melancholy added in that give him more of a three dimensionality than you find in earlier work. Thanks to Libro.fm for the free listening copy!
