It Chooses You
It Chooses You | Miranda July
12 posts | 12 read | 16 to read
In the summer of 2009, Miranda July was struggling to finish writing the screenplay for her much-anticipated second film. During her increasingly long lunch breaks, she began to obsessively read the PennySaver, the iconic classifieds booklet that reached everywhere and seemed to come from nowhere. Who was the person selling the Large leather Jacket, $10? It seemed important to find outor at least it was a great distraction from the screenplay. Accompanied by photographer Brigitte Sire, July crisscrossed Los Angeles to meet a random selection of PennySaver sellers, glimpsing thirteen surprisingly moving and profoundly specific realities, along the way shaping her film, and herself, in unexpected ways. Elegantly blending narrative, interviews, and photographs with Julys off-kilter honesty and deadpan humor, this is a story of procrastination and inspiration, isolation and connection, and grabbing hold of the invisible world.

Holy bengal leopard babies, this may be my favorite book I've read this year. Miranda July always succeeds in making me feel uncomfortable, wistful, embarrassed, & understood. Her observations of quirky humans (like David Sedaris) can feel judgmental, but her curated candor projects honesty and compassion. She edits herself with such self -deprecation and made me laugh at both her wit and relatable reactions. Gah, tears. Great photos! #mommyreads

I am a slow reader, so I am trying to be reasonable with my TBR for my options for #MakeMeReadIt. Thanks to @TheReadingMermaid for organizing this fun event. Voting is throughout July for August reading. Just in case here are the titles:
1. English Breakfast Murder
2. Hollywood Homicide
3. Bewitched, Bothered and Biscotti
4. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society

readordierachel @Donna_sBookMinute I'm drawing a blank. The more I look at it, the more I feel like I should demote it to a book shack. :) 8y

Book haul from a tiny sale at the local art museum this weekend. Found a few from my "to read" list!

All I ever really want to know is how other people are making it through life—where do they put their body, hour by hour, and how do they cope inside of it.

I love Miranda July, I'm not exactly sure why but this is the book I go back to again and again, especially when I need to feel connected to the world. It makes me happy, sad, laugh, and happy again.

Miranda July is quirky & funny & sweet and a little bit snarky. She is always dead smart and witty. Some of these stories made me laugh, some brought me close to tears, and a few made me a bit indignant. I loved the concept and I really loved the thread she used to weave it all together.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I read The First Bad Man, so which one of hers should I read next? Suggestions? I like her! 9y
SusanInTiburon Wow, that sounds fun! 9y
CherylDeFranceschi So far, every word of this book is perfect!! It could not be sweeter it funnier or quirkier... 9y
courtney I really liked some of the stories and thought it was such a fun premise. Other times I was disappointed by how judgmental she was of some people who let her into their home to talk 9y
CherylDeFranceschi @courtney I feel like any of the snark she shows is really directed at herself and is more self-deprecating than judgmental. But that could just be me. 9y
courtney @CherylDeFranceschi she is definitely queen of self-deprecation! I just remember at one point she compared a woman's home to a FEMA-like encampment and always made it a point to describe how poor people were. Some essays were really gorgeous, others just seemed to elevate her privilege 9y
