The Z Murders
The Z Murders: A British Library Crime Classic | J. Farjeon
9 posts | 7 read | 1 to read
"Jefferson Farjeon is quite unsurpassed for creepy skill in mysterious adventures."- Dorothy L. SayersRichard Temperley arrives at Euston station early on a fogbound London morning. He takes refuge in a nearby hotel, along with a disagreeable fellow passenger, who had snored his way through the train journey. But within minutes the other man has snored for the last time - he has been shot dead while sleeping in an armchair. Temperley has a brief encounter with a beautiful young woman, but she flees the scene. When the police arrive, Detective Inspector James discovers a token at the crime scene: "a small piece of enamelled metal. Its colour was crimson, and it was in the shape of the letter Z."Temperley sets off in pursuit of the mysterious woman from the hotel, and finds himself embroiled in a cross-country chase - by train and taxi - on the tail of a sinister serial killer. This classic novel by the author of the best-selling Mystery in White is a gripping thriller by a neglected master of the genre.

Mehso-so

Finally done with this murder mystery. This author was a part of the golden age of mysteries that included the likes of Nero Wolfe, Dorothy Sayers and Agatha Christie, so naturally I was eager to pick this one up.
It wasn‘t bad and I mean it in a good way. It was a good murder mystery but it lacked clues and was rather “talky”. I would, however, like to read his other works and see how they go.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Love that these imprints allow me to discover these old mysteries - the story is a bit preposterous but it is a fun read.

Farjeon's romances read so weirdly now with their all but helpless female protagonists (except in Thirteen Guests), but otherwise this is solidly entertaining. It's an early serial killer novel with a rather creepy antagonist.

J. Jefferson Farjeon was a lesser known but still accomplished writer during the Golden Era of mysteries. The Z Murders follows the typical plot of many mysteries from that era - a dashing, clever man meets a mysterious damsel in distress & attempts to outwit the police & criminals while on a madcap chase. A disfigured villain with no arms, plenty of disguises, quaint & trustworthy villagers & a likable hero make a pleasant mystery.
