Audio. It was good, but hard to follow. Lots of characters, and all over the place in time/chronology with all the different characters made it really hard to follow. I don‘t even know if the hostage situation was finished or how it finished! There were a couple of interesting twists that I hadn‘t expected. I could have done without the abortion descriptions. Good parts: I learned a few things, an interesting author‘s note at the end.

The topic in this book is very important & I give kudos to Picoult for tackling it & doing an impressive amount of research for both sides. 3.5 stars. I didn‘t see where telling the story backwards added much to the story & think it could‘ve been more intriguing if it had been told chronologically. The Author‘s Note was very informative.

Thank you, Misty! Got the package you sent me today. I've been meaning to try out a Jodi Picoult novel for some time now and this one looks interesting. I also love the little book of dream-based quotes. I'll pull it out for a boost when things feel difficult. I hope you and your family are having a joyous holiday season. #happyholidays #litsylove #bookmail

‘But we can‘t make policies based on religion when religion means different things to different people......You can decide the ethical value that has for you, based on your own relationship with God but the POLICIES around basic human rights with regard to reproduction shouldn‘t be up for interpretation‘

Santie The subject of the book was thought-provoking, as all moral dilemmas are. The representation of pro-choice vs pro-life was well balanced and both sides are presented adequately. The book however, was told backwards and in flashback fashion and that made the reading laborious and the plot hard to follow. There are a significant number of characters and that made it hard to keep up with the story. (edited) 4y
Santie The pro-choice argument was mostly based on traumatic incidents that the women went through. To highlight the complexity of coming to this decision. Which I didn‘t like completely because it sorts of suggests that trauma or hardship is a prerequisite to being pro choice. That to me sort of dilutes the pro-choice stance. Will people still be understanding if a woman decides to get an abortion but is happy, married, and financially secure? 4y
Santie If we are to truly be pro-choice, then there should be lack of judgment when a women makes that decision, no matter the circumstances. 4y
Santie The pro-lifers argue that life begins at conception and that a foetus is a person who should have full rights. The problem with this is that in most cases, giving the foetus rights takes them away from the mother. Is the mother not human, then? They believe that the unborn deserve a voice and that‘s their mission: to give a voice to the voiceless. But can they truly know what that voice would say? (edited) 4y
Santie Also, most pro life activist said things like ‘what if the baby you are aborting could have been the next Obama?‘ BUT what if it could have been the next Hitler? 4y

This book was a very heavy read, also trigger warnings for abortion and rape before you go into this book. I did enjoy this book, it kept my interest and it did make me feel deeply. The one thing I did not like about this book was that it went backwards. Other than that, a very deep read, and had some amazing passages. Also had a lot of good points on both sides of abortion. I love an author that can stay objective. 4/5 stars

I was floored with how many controversial issues and perspectives were part of the plot in this book! Very human stories, both heartbreaking and up lifting at the same time. This is a great read for people on both sides of the issues of abortion, gun control, and raising children.

Book 110 I listenend to A Spark of Light, Picoult's commendable, "light"-shining on abortion law, human rights, and violence perpetrated by some in the pro-life community. Confusing as an audiobook, the entire story is set on one day, out of chronological order. Though the characters didn't lack depth, they didn't inspire engagement, either.

This was my first time reading a Jodi Picoult novel. Although the book had a great plot, I only gave it 3 stars because it was told in a way that made it extremely hard to focus on it. Besides the fact that there were numerous characters that you had to keep up with, the story was also told backwards which made it extremely confusing. I would read another Picoult book as long as it was written without the backward story line.

rather_be_reading that was her first that i remember her doing that. Dont give up on Picoult! 4y

This took me a while to get into. The backward story line had me confused until I found the rhythm and could follow it more easily. The story is a powerful one of choice, faith and controversy which tugs at the reader‘s heartstrings for a number of reasons. There is never a valid reason to rampage anywhere, let alone through an abortion clinic which is full of women making difficult decisions, and the author tackled the subject respectfully.

I usually enjoy Jodi Picoult‘s novels, mostly because of her ability to confront a variety of controversial subject matter. But this one, about a shooter at an abortion clinic, was just a miss for me. This audiobook really dragged, maybe because of the reverse timeline, or maybe for other reasons that I can‘t put my finger on. Regardless, definitely not my favorite of hers.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks This is my least favorite... 4y

This book wasn‘t a favorite but I definitely applaud the author for taking on a subject as political and religious as abortion for the center stage of the story. Very well researched and good story. I wasn‘t a fan of the backward story telling and found myself not interested in the middle parts of the book but just getting through so I could read the end. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This thought provoking story is based at the only women‘s health clinic in Mississippi where fifteen year old Wren has been brought to the clinic to get the birth control pill when a gunman breaks in and takes the staff and the patients hostage. The story allows us to hear everyone‘s back story at the clinic that day including Wren‘s father Hugh a police negotiator who finds himself negotiating with the gunman to save his daughters life.

I totally enjoyed the book. I like the way the points of view of such controversial topic are given. People judge and never dare to think of what people may feel once they make a choice and how that affects emotionally.

I didn't like the writing style of this book, Jodi Picoult didn't write chronologically and it forced me to work harder at keeping the stories straight. It was interesting. The story itself is powerful and extremely relevant to the climate of today.

Reggie I agree, I gave it a pick because I liked it, but think the story would have benefited from being told forwards not backwards. 5y

Sometimes you just need to have a good cry and feel like you‘ve been pulled through a wringer. Picoult does it again. She created characters that were relatable in a circumstance that hits all of the buttons. It wasn‘t my favourite of hers, but still a good read. She is just such a great storyteller who is fearless when it comes to tackling hard subjects. 🌟🌟🌟1/2

Picoult tackles a tough subject, but covers both sides well. I think it‘s great how we see the viewpoints of a diverse cast of characters and got to see how their beliefs and choices led them all to the same place, even if for very different reasons. As she says in her note, the lives of women are a thousand shades of gray. Sensitive subject covered well.
