pickWhat a gem of a book. Fell in love with the Hayao Miyazaki movie as a kid and didn‘t know it was based on this book until recently. The author made the story based on a picture her daughter drew, so cute. There are different little stories in the book than the movie with her deliveries. Since I saw the movie first, it doesn‘t matter to me! If anything, it‘s like bonus stories now. I got to read about several more great Kiki delivery stories.
so-soI was a little surprised this wasn't more charming. It was fine, but that's all I can really say. Maybe something is lost in translation? Hayao Miyazaki definitely capitalized on the best parts and added some conflict and interest. I think the movie is better.
pickThis is just what I needed! A sweet palate cleanser. I‘d listen to this again. I‘ve found a witch genre I like … Harry Potter & Kiki! Not the same but also good witches.
Kiki leaves home at a young age with nothing but her mom‘s broom, a red radio & a sack lunch. She‘s sweet & kind & helpful.
She works through several problems & manages to keep a smile through her 1st year in a new city with her cat companion!

pickGood book, it blends fantasy with the real world so well, you end up thinking it‘s nonfiction (in my head, at least). I will get the film out bc my librarian said they are very different. This is such an adorable book. I‘m not sure who‘s page on Litsy I first saw it on, but thanks to this community, I‘ve found books I would have never found. Doing a little creative journaling bc I need it. For any of you Hobonichi people out there, Tombow 026 yellow gold is the bomb for this season! Oh, and who doesn‘t love washi tape?
pickI grew up watching Miyazaki's adaptation of this book, so it was a ton of fun listening to the original. What a cute story! I love all of the situations Kiki gets caught up in. This book also starts with a super charming forward from the author. I look forward to reading more of this cute middle grade series. #MovieAdaptation #Witch #MiddleGrade #Japan

The third book I'm reading for the #Asianreadathon is the story of half-witch Kiki and her black cat Jiji as they take on the traditional witch's challenge of living in a new town for a year. The story was inspired by a drawing by the author's daughter and turned into an animated film by Hayao Miyazaki. The prompt for this is read a book by an Asian author that has a universe you'd want to experience or a universe totally different from yours.

Anyway! I at least finished this delightful little book. I‘ve never seen the anime, so it was nice picturing everything the way Eiko Kadono described it. It‘s very whimsical with sweet messages throughout and I look forward to sharing it with my kids in the future.

There‘s definitely a range from the cute (Great Pumpkin, Kiki‘s Delivery Service) to the gruesome (Cujo).
pickThis is a sweet, wholesome #middlegrade novel about Kiki - a witch who is coming of age and finding her way. The narrative is relatively episodic, which I actually enjoyed. It meant I could pick it up and just read a chapter and feel satisfied until I had a chance to pick it up again. There is also the sassy black cat Jiji, who is Kiki‘s companion (just like my sassy cat April is mine!). Recommend for anyone who needs a lighthearted, magical tale.

This was a nice read for younger girls about a girl and her vocation as a witch. It was simple, but quirky; I think my 12-yr-old might like it, but I would say it‘s at more of an 8-10-yr-old reading level. The only thing that bugged me was the overemphasis on girls being “cute,” but that might be a Japanese culture thing. #amazonbookbox

pickPicked this book up as a birthday gift for one of my nieces. Of course, I had to read it first and found it to be an imaginative and fun story.
pickThis book proves that even if Studio Ghibli never made a movie based on this, I would have fallen for the adorable tale of KiKi coming into her witch self. It‘s adorable, whimsical and absolutely captivating from start to finish! I‘m so glad it‘s in English now and can be enjoyed in a whole new format!

Okay, final bonus #blackcat post. I dressed as Kiki (fun fact: that is my family nickname), with a black cat purse to represent Jiji, for Halloween a few years ago. I never put that much effort into my Halloween costumes, but this one actually turned out really good!
