I told myself I would never read these books, but here I am. The story was simple and to the point. While there is nothing wrong with Christian values, this book feels like it wants you to blindly follow and trust in those values, without questioning, and that's where the problem stems from.

Doppoetry The antagonists aren't antagonists because they are motivated by anything specific. You are meant to just trust that they are bad because “trust me, bro.“ I found the portrayal of the “white witch“ to be pretty misogynistic. I can see people arguing over the opposite, where he had given a woman power over a man and some children, but it has left a bad taste in my mouth. 3w

“When things once start going right they often go on getting better and better.” What a perfect quote from the first book of a truly amazing series. This is a book for all ages as long as their imagination is vast and they long for wonderful adventures. Digory‘s story shows that who one puts their trust in and who they choose to respect or fear will determine which path in life they will take. #narnia #52challenge

#wondrouswednesday Thanks @Eggs & @TheSpineView for the tag!

1) Jodi Taylor—I ❤️ how her books take a most hilarious jaunt through history. I think she‘d be a ton of fun
2) Litsy mainly, but also BookBub‘s notifications of discount books, and Amazon kindle unlimited and free Audible prime books
3) Not an unpredictable twist but I was shocked to learn how the tagged book set up The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. It was a wonderful surprise!

I‘ve started these complete works in audio (33 hours worth) and just finished the first book, The Magician‘s Nephew. I‘d only seen a few of the movies, so it was a complete delight to learn how Narnia came about, and the witch, and the wardrobe! Kenneth Branaugh read the first book and may I say, he did all the different animal voices spectacularly!! I‘m loving it so much so far!! #chunksterchallenge2022 @Amiable

The first time I read The Magician‘s Nephew, I read it in chronological order, which means it was the first of the Narniad that I read. I liked learning about Narnia's beginning, but I thought the story was a little slow and boring. This second time around, I read The Magician‘s Nephew in published order, the sixth of seven books. I enjoyed the story more this time around because I had the other books still in my recent memory as I read it.

What do you suggest??

I decided to read these in publication order as I did as a child. Along the way I decided that may be it is best to read them in chronological order instead. I‘m debating with the exception of this book. I‘m wondering if it doesn‘t have more impact on me after having read all but The Last Battle. So maybe I‘d recommend reading them in chronological order except for this one - to be read right before The Last Battle.

Kenneth Branagh is a delight! The story may have been just OK, and again, heavy on the Christian undertones, but his narration was great! He gave the characters a wide variety of voices and really acted out the scenes. As a bit of a prequel to the series, this one still managed to feel fresh and moved at a good pace. The Magician was a shady fella but his nephew Digory seemed like a kid with a decent head on his shoulders.

When I first read The Chronicles, The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe was a clear favorite but I loved the series as a whole. Some of the books I remember clearly and others not so much. On this #reread, I think I have been enjoying the whole series just as much and some books more than before. This is one of those. This time, I noticed and considered more of the depth of the story.

#NarniaReadalong #audiobook

Daisey @CaffeineAndCandy Hey, look at that, I actually finally finished one about with the schedule. I‘m thoroughly enjoying this readalong even if I started way late and tend to just listen to each book almost straight through. Thanks so much for the push to reread them! 3y
Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers I definitely felt there were some similarities to aspects of the creation in The Silmarillion. This was great to reread while all of that is still pretty fresh in my mind. #FellowshipOfTolkien (edited) 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey Singing the world into creation, the song changing to create different parts of it….some pretty important trees and tree and fruit symbology, although the trees and fruit do reflect some Christian mythology too, like eating the one fruit, it reminded me of a few other important trees too. 3y

Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes, the singing of the creation was the thing that most caught my attention as well as pairs of trees. I also realize dwarves are metal workers in many stories, but their immediate job of creating the crowns struck me as well. 3y

A bit darker and a bit more critical of humanity as Lewis goes back to the beginning and tries to explain how humans ended up in Narnia‘s outer lands despite the fact that the original children were rare and had to come from our world, and how did the White Witch end up there, was she from there originally? I found his answers as interesting as some of the new plot holes he accidentally opened up, but I enjoyed it nevertheless.

#NarniaReadAlong

Riveted_Reader_Melissa My #FellowshipOfTolkien group might also find this one interesting. I found some of the creation myth he created oddly reminiscent of The Silmarillion. 🤔 3y
Daisey I‘ve been enjoying my reread through audio, and I‘m definitely looking forward to this one. I remember thinking the creation aspect very interesting but don‘t remember the details. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey I really want to talk about it, but I‘ll wait until after you read it….I want to see if you see it too, or if it‘s just me. After knowing they were both in the Inklings and spending the last year or two deep diving into Tolkien‘s creation myth, it sort of stood out to me. 3y

JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey Is it possible to read this book without reading the others? I have never read Narnia, but l'd live to take part in the conversation 😊 3y

This was a good book and I‘m glad I started with it for the Narnia Chronicles despite my understanding that it was written after the other books. Here is my favorite written word of the book - a warning, of our future in a tyrannical run society...seems about right. Let‘s hope society has the will to change for the better and that the wicked people out there are stopped sooner rather than later which can come at great cost to society.
