In the tradition of WONDER and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD this award-winning New York Times bestseller is an intensely moving, lyrically-written novel.COUNTING BY 7S tells the story of Willow Chance, a twelve-year-old genius who is obsessed with diagnosing medical conditions and finds comfort in counting by 7s. It has never been easy for her to connect with anyone other than her adoptive parents, but that hasn't kept her from leading a quietly happy life . . . until now. Suddenly Willow's world is tragically changed when her parents both die in a car crash, leaving her alone in a baffling world. Her journey to find a fascinatingly diverse and fully believable surrogate family is a joy and a revelation to read.

This is about 12 year old Willow Chance: genius, adoptee, orphan. A weird and wonderful kid dealing with grief.

My 7th graders read this with another teacher and told me it was a great book, so I borrowed it from her to read now that school‘s out. I‘m thoroughly enjoying it, even with the heartbreaking moments.

A very sweet book. Definitely recommended if you‘re looking for a book where the main character is adopted. Also has some reference to the foster care system, which you don‘t see often in a book. The main character is also BIPOC. Other characters are Vietnamese and there is reference to their culture and language as well. Was confused why my local book store had it in the middle grade section, many nuances would be lost on that age group.

Willow Chance is an inspiration and uniter of lost souls. I loved every second of this novel. It was lyrical and perfect in its simplicity. She tackles a main character on the spectrum respectfully and with grace. Highly recommend this quick read.

After the sudden loss of her parents, Willow life is turned upside down. But with a few good friends, hopefully one day she will find roots.

Its been awhile since a book has made me cry but this one did.

This book is about many things. It‘s about lifestyle changes. It‘s about the families we make for ourselves. It‘s about what we all do to get through tough times and how we do it. And it‘s about the unexpected changes that take place in your life, and as Pattie says nothing is certain. Everything is temporary in it‘s own way. But that‘s what makes it what it is. It‘s a great book and I fully recommend it.

Review: Counting by 7's by Holly Goldberg Sloan, 2013, is a realistic fiction chapter book about a young girl navigating life after losing both of her parents in a horrible accident.
Blurb: I would read this book to a classroom/recommend it if I knew that one of my students had lost a loved one or were struggling with a situation at home the resembled the one in the story.

When I started I was very reluctant and found it not very good.
Then...it started and it seemed like a small snowball you push off a hill. It grew and grew and grew. By the end...my heart is very full and I know that I'll be counting TO 7, for the rest of my life.

This book just nuzzles up under your skin. It is clear that Sloan has dealt with loss in her poignant explanations of the experience. She is able to intricately weave this big experience with humor, love, and a lightness that is heartwarming. I already started recommending it to all of my seventh grade students. Well done.

Mehso-so

I read this for my book club in High School I must admit while I was reading I wasn't like THIS BOOK IS SO AMAZING UGH! Nope that wasn't me at all I just thought this be was okay and all, the font is so huge which you could read a lot faster, and also the chapters are very small you just want to know what's going to happen.I didn't connect with the characters at all, I just didn't care about their lives.Overall it was meh. My Rating- ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

A beautiful story about a gifted young girl who loses both her parents in a car crash. The few random people in Willow's life come together to help her.

Despite the heavy subject matter, there was much humor in this story. Lots of quotable quotes that I'll be sharing.

I think I would have liked this a lot when I was a kid. Reading it as an adult, I did like it, but it didn‘t blow me away. It was cute. I loved the introduction to Willow during the flashback section at the beginning, but it lost me a bit after that. I knew some suspension of disbelief would be required, but I found some things just bugged my adult brain a little too much. 😅

I really enjoy the contrast in the cover page. There are many blue fish which I believe represents the majority of people. Then there is a red fish in the middle which I think represents Willow with her unique situation.

This story is a good example of a girl who is faced with tragedy but learns how to push through her grief. She is a unique character with very unique traits. I think this story does a great job of relating to a different type of child or exposes children to understand different ways of life.
