The Carnivorous Carnival
The Carnivorous Carnival | Lemony Snicket
There is nothing to be found in the pages of A Series of Unfortunate Events but misery and despair. You still have time to choose another international best-seller to read. But if you must know what unpleasantries befall the charming and clever Baudelaire children read on . . . The Carnivorous Carnival contains such a distressing story that consuming any of its contents would be far more stomach-turning than even the most imbalanced meal. To avoid causing discomfort, it would be best if I didnt mention any of the ingredients of this story, particularly a confusing map, an ambidextrous person, an unruly crowd, a wooden plank and Chabo the Wolf Baby. Your time might be better filled with something more palatable such as eating your vegetables or feeding them to someone else. With 5 million copies sold in the UK alone, one might consider Lemony Snickets A Series of Unfortunate Events to make him one of the most successful childrens authors of the past decade. We, however, consider these miserable so-called adventure stories and the Hollywood film starring Jim Carrey that accompanied the books for children as nothing more than a dreadful mistake.

The Baudelaires find themselves in the Hinterlands with just Olaf's troupe of villains for company and a carnival to hide within, disguised as freaks so they aren't recognized. They are close to uncovering more secrets about VFD but are beginning to question what they must do to find the answers.

“Adding cinnamon to hot chocolate is a terrific idea, Sunny,” Violet said, “but I‘m having trouble enjoying it.” “Ificat,” Sunny said, which meant “Me too.” “Count Olaf‘s latest scheme leaves a bad taste in my mouth,” Klaus said, “and I don‘t think cinnamon will help.”

AC went out again yesterday. But I‘m drinking hot chocolate like a disturbed person because Sunny said so 😂 #foodspiration

Honestly not as much fun as I thought it would be given the title, but it was still entertaining!

Exactly as you would assume, the children wind up on yet another dangerous path (involving lions and a fortune teller, oh my!) as Count Olaf still tries to get his hands on them!

Book 50 of the year, finished??, Audio

Got a little behind in my book records. Not sure when I finished this one.

I surprised myself by actually enjoying it. I figured the rest of the series would be a slog but I found this enjoyable. Probably because the kids are truly on their own and are not relying on ineptly dangerous adults anymore. Go do your thing Baudelaires!

My re-read of these kind of stalled. But what better time to pick it back up again than when trapped in the backseat on a road trip like a child.

Enjoying my reread of the series as I watch each Netflix episode, despite Daniel Handler being totally icky as a human.

Patrick Warburton as Lemony Snicket is resplendent. The Netflix series makes me nostalgic. This is one of the many series I started reading aloud to my daughter when she was small and she finished them on her own as she grew up. I love how these books don‘t treat children as adorable little idiots but as thinking growing people.

A shout-out to one heck of a cliff hanger...love A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix. We just finished Season 2 and all four of us agree it will be an interminably long wait for Season 3. So fun watching with the kids who are mesmerized by the show—gasps, groans and even a “curse you Count Olaf,” were heard tonight as we watched one unfortunate event after another. Now, we are relaxing with our books & all reading before bed. Super fun day.

Whew! I have finally finished books 5-9 of A Series of Unfortunate Events! As usual, the books were full of unbelievably stupid adults, but I still enjoyed reading them (although I am so ready for some more grown-up books). I love the writing style, the added characters, and the added mystery of the VFD. And rather than being continuously placed in unfit homes, the Baudelaires are now on the run.

Starting the last book I need to read before season 2 of the Netflix series! Incidentally, this is also the first book of the series that I ever read...proving that I've always been terrible at reading books in order and it's also the reason that 6th grade me never remembered which books I had already read in the series ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I‘ve been slowly picking away at these books, borrowing them from my son who has the entire series. This is Book 9 and is one of my favorites so far as I loved the carnival setting and the circus “freaks” especially ambidextrous Kevin. With a cliffhanger ending I may go on to read the next quicker than I usually would. I feel like we‘re getting closer to some more answers...maybe?

Things are really kicking off now! Count Olaf is no longer hiding, and instead the Baudelaires are. That cliffhanger really makes me want to read the next book quickly! I do feel like things are getting dragged out a little though. It would be nice to get a clue or two a little more often.

The children decide to take on Count Olaf by using his own tricks against him. They wear ridiculous disguises and come up with preposterous background stories and hide right under his nose for the majority of the novel. They hide and lie and scheme. They reach out, they encourage, and for the first time, they feel real hope for their future, even when it looks like everything and everyone is against them.

Finished this one a couple of weeks ago, but haven't gotten around to saying so until now. I love how Lemony Snicket can make me laugh just with the clever word play and antics of the narrator. Still dying to know who Beatrice is and wondering what the Baudelaire orphans will be getting themselves into in the next installment! (This pic is of my Luna doing what I wish I could have done today!) #littenkittens #catsoflitsy

So I've been reading A Series of Unfortunate Events. I haven't read them before and I'm pretty sure it's because my lil child self thought they were below me, or something. Which is deeply shameful, they're actually quite good. Only four to go. PS I'm reading the big 13-book+ ebook and my iPad can't handle the file size. I have to open a separate window and read it on my computer 😂
