A Girl of the Limberlost
A Girl of the Limberlost: Classic Literature | Gene Porter
19 posts | 39 read | 28 to read
The scene is laid in the same country as that of "Freckles", which appeared a few years before. A number of the characters in "Freckles" are introduced here, and Elnora, the chief character, has the same deep love for the woods that possessed the boy Freckles. She has also become the proud owner of all his books on birds, insects, etc., and has tried to preserve the wonderful room he had made on the edge of the swamp. Elnora is a strong character, and although she has many things to contend with, she accomplishes what she has set out to do-namely, win for herself the education she craved. Through the money she received from the Bird Woman for the specimens she gathered and carried to the city she is able to pay her way through the High School and eventually is able to accept the position of Lecturer on Natural History in the city schools.

I was asked for fav fictional characters: Ender Wiggin for his questioning mind, Elnora Comstock for curiosity, Atticus Finch for parenting skills, Jo March for her fiery spirit & disregard for social norms, Katie Nolan for strength, Armand Gamache for humility & wisdom, Marvin the Android for sarcasm, Kvothe for ingenuity, Aragorn for his quiet leadership, Herr Thiessen for his devotion to beauty, & Jane Eyre for her calm determination.

Though Elnora isn‘t #homeless, she might as well be, since her mother ignores her, obsessing about the missing husband she wishes were in Hell. #dragmetohell

Friends help Elnora attend school, buying her new clothes (probably including a #sweater), in this novel with a #forestgreencover

Day 5 of #20Series20Days #Top20Series I don‘t really think of this as a series, but GR calls it the Limberlost Series. Characters from Freckles appear in the tagged book. And Freckles Comes Home was written by the author‘s daughter. The tagged book is one of my very favorites, while I‘ve only read the Freckles books once each, so that probably tells you all you need to know. 😊

Andrew65 Not heard of this. 4y

Exercised a bit while listening to this. It was my mom‘s favorite book and I‘ve been meaning to read it for a long time. I have to go help with a candidate event in an hour, so I‘ll listen to audio in the car to and from. Can‘t believe it‘s already the 5th hour of #readathon!

#Cult5. The girl reader edition. 👧
Thanks to @vivastory, the only one I know has cult status is the Moomin book.
If I owned a copy, Weetzie Bat by Francesca Lia Block would be here too.
Thanks for the tag @AnneCecilie ☺️

This was the book that got me back into reading. I read it for the first time when I was a young teen. I love it so SO much. Nature! Music! Drama! Romance! Happy Ending! It felt so good to walk with this character.

#riotgrams / day 7 / #welllovedbooks / I'm fairly certain that both of these were once my grandmother's. I have a special place in my heart for A Girl of the Limberlost.

There are so many great badass heroines, I couldn't chose just one. Jane, Scout, Katniss, Elnora, Offred, and Turtle are all badass in their own way. #MostBadassHeroine #riotgrams

Here are all #Girlinthetitle books I have on Kindle. I didn't realize how many I had. So I took a screen pic and played with a bunch of the stickers here on Litsy. 😬 #ReadJanuary #genestrattonporterismymomsfavauthor so I should read her sooner.

LizGotauco I was obsessed with Girl of the Limberlost as a teen...despite a very big bug phobia ha! 8y
Chessa @LizGotauco My copy was my grandmother's! I read it as an adult, and some of it was kind of weird/icky from a contemporary standpoint (the mother/daughter thing was...fraught) but overall, I really liked it! And I loved imagining my grandma reading the same copy. ❤️ 8y
Chessa @SusanInTiburon @LauraBeth @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @LeahBergen Thanks! ❤️ It was so funny, when he was building it he kept changing his plans - and going over the changes in minute detail with me. Little did he know I had no freaking idea what he was talking about from the beginning, so there was a lot of smile-and-nod on my part. 😂😬 8y

It's #recommendsday and I've been thinking about rereading this one recently. This is a go to favorite from my childhood AND is in the public domain! Features: strong female characters, gorgeous nature writing, a little bit of heartbreak and a whole lot of figuring out what's important in life. Recommended for fans of: Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, or outdoorsy people. Fantastic family book ("wholesome") that I still love as an adult.

rubyslippersreads I love this book and was always jealous of Elnora's lunchbox. 😄🍎🍗🍰 8y

Thanks to @Avidreader25 I'm on the lookout for my copy of this book I loved so much in middle school. I'm hoping my mom still has it. If not, I'll be scouring my bookshelves this weekend.

AvidReader25 I hope you find it! 9y

SurlyBooks This was my mother's favorite childhood book. I do not know how it's possible that I never read it. Tossing it on my TBR stack now. 9y

An absolutely wonderful read. I thought this one would be boring, but the main character is a fiery, independent girl. She's a bit like Anne of Green Gables, but a little more of an outsider. A truly wonderful coming-of-age story.

capriciousreader I loved that book. 9y
LitHousewife That was one of my favorite books in middle school. Thanks for reminding me of it. I just might have to find time to reread it. 9y
AvidReader25 I didn't discover it until last year. I wish I'd read it earlier! 9y
LitHousewife I'm going to google the cover I remember from my collection. I wonder if my mom still has it? 9y
