From the author of The Art Historian Art restorer Gabriel Allon is trying to put his secret service past behind him. But when his friend Benjamin Stern is murdered in Munich, he's called into action once more. Police in Germany are certain that Stern, a professor well known for his work on the Holocaust, was killed by right-wing extremists. But Allon is far from convinced. Not least because all trace of the new book Stern was researching has now mysteriously disappeared . . . Meanwhile, in Rome, the new Pope paces around his garden, thinking about the perilous plan he's about to set in motion. If successful, he will revolutionize the Church. If not, he could very well destroy it . . . In the dramatic weeks to come, the journeys of these two men will intersect. Long-buried secrets and unthinkable deeds will come to light, and both their lives will be changed for ever . . .

#springskies #involvesart This is the 2nd Gabriel Allon book I have read.It is a fast paced, complex thriller, that is impeccably researched.Allon is an art restorer & and reluctant Mossad agent/assassin,who is painstakingly restoring a Bellini painting in a Catholic Church in Venice. There is a plot to assassinate the current Pope from within the Vatican because of his plans to heal the breach between Catholics & the Jews. 🔽

kspenmoll Allon is trusted with this recent Pope‘s protection as he is doing the unprecedented for the Church: opening sealed archives so the world can have evidence of Pope Pius‘s silent role during the Holocaust. In doing so he hopes this act will be a step towards reconciliation with the Jews. 7mo
Librarybelle I really liked the first in the series. I want to get back to these some day… 7mo
kspenmoll @Librarybelle I am listening to them which I‘ve enjoyed. I hope to now go in order from this book on. Allon is a compelling character - he is a healer & destroyer. He seems to struggle w that. 7mo

#marvelousmarch #serieslove2024
Read some wonderful books but by far the intense, heartbreaking, generational “survivor” story, The Postcard, is a stand out on its own- 5 ++++ Stars. The other 4 books are part of a series, or as in Murder in Westminster, the first in a planned for series.

Andrew65 Some great books here, well done 👏👏👏 7mo
TheSpineView Some excellent books. Great job 7mo
Cathythoughts Very nice 👏🏻♥️ 7mo

The tagged book was very much about what the pope knew. And here we go:

Records From Once-Secret Archive Offer New Clues Into Vatican Response To Holocaust
The Vatican has long maintained that Pope Pius XII did everything he could to save Jewish lives, but newly unearthed papers have renewed accusations of complicit silence against him.

Read in NPR: https://apple.news/ANpQ-zbyFSo2Id0JjtDw3Uw

GingerAntics He was totally complicit. It‘s disgusting. I don‘t understand how any Christian can profess faith in a Jewish man as god and be anti Semitic or be complicit in anti Semitic activities. It just disgusts me. 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics You might enjoy this tagged book. It is right on point 4y
GingerAntics I‘m going to have to find a copy. I‘ve read articles and things that he knew and did nothing about it, but the story was much different in catholic school, I can tell you that. I‘ve always found it odd that he chose the name Pious, but he wasn‘t Pious one bit. 4y

GingerAntics Do I need to read this series in order? 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics I hadn‘t read anything else by this author although I certainly would again. He‘s great. I bought the audiobook which was very well done. 4y
GingerAntics That makes me feel better. 4y

An artwork restorer is called back to his “real job”: to hunt down the killer of his Jewish friend, who was writing a book to expose the Catholic church‘s conduct during WWII. With the help of allies of both religions, he must evade killers who want the church‘s secret to stay secret. Non-stop action with brilliant twists, this is an excellent thriller. Kudos to the narrator, who deftly handled various accents. #readingeurope2020 #VaticanCity

Quite good news for me today while listening to this audiobook, I learned it will work for my #readingeurope2020 challenge for #VaticanCity. I already had a book picked out, but that‘s ok, this one is so good so far!

Audio gardening to the tagged book tonight. This is before and after. Just need a couple more hours to finish cleaning up this bed. These plants take a beating through winter and spring storms. It‘s very therapeutic cleaning them up. Book is a #blameitonlitsy thanks to @Kammbia1 I‘m a little over an hour into it and it‘s really good.

Caterina It's therapeutic just looking at your before and after pics! How satisfying! 5y

I liked the first two Allon books, but I loved this one. Can‘t wait to continue with the series. Allon‘s friend has been writing a book revealing secrets about the Vatican and its role in WW2 and the church is willing to take extreme measures to maintain its secrecy. Found the the fictional Pope Paul VII to be such a full character. The historical facts in the afterward made it even more powerful.

Cinfhen My favorite series!!!!! 5y

My favourite in the series so far 👍🏻 Brilliant thriller. I also love that you geographically end up in so many places in these books. Have to check how many more I‘ve still got on the piles - I think maybe 3!

rockpools You've reminded me to *finally* reserve the first one - I've been meaning to try these forever. 7y
TrishB @RachelO they‘re good, quick paced thrillers with a great MC 👍🏻 7y

Kammbia1 I got recommended this series yesterday. And I thought this novel was the most intriguing to try out. 5y
TrishB @Kammbia1 you don‘t want to start at the beginning? There‘s a lot of personal back stories in them (and I always have to start at the beginning!). 5y
Kammbia1 @trishb The premise of the first two books did not grab me as the premise for The Confessor. I want to start with this one first to see if I like it. 5y
TrishB @Kammbia1 I can‘t read series out of order! 5y

One reason I‘m glad I was late to arrive on the Gabriel Allon train, there are many left to read. This one was fast paced and sophisticated, the ever changing foreign locations deepen the intrigue.Though a work of fiction ,it makes one think about the Vatican and its reaction or lack of it ,to the Holocaust.Nicely played , Daniel Silva.

Kammbia1 This series was recommended to me yesterday. I looked up his books and thought this novel would be the best one to try out. 5y
Leftcoastzen @Kammbia1 I‘ve gone either way , meaning, sometimes I start with the one by that author that sounds most interesting to me , just to see if I like it .But if you are a person who prefers a series in order, the first one is (edited) 5y

Another great Gabriel Allon book! Not as enthralling for me as the others I read so far- maybe because the subject of the Catholic Church was a little less relatable for me - but still had me gasping out loud on the train every day!

Love this series featuring Gabriel Allon. He's an Israeli agent and also an art restorer. Plots are great and character development fabulous...flaws and all. This is one in the series.
