Miss Graham's Cold War Cookbook
Miss Graham's Cold War Cookbook: A Novel | Celia Rees
10 posts | 6 read | 16 to read
A striking historical novel about an ordinary young British woman sent to uncover a network of spies and war criminals in post-war Germany that will appeal to fans of The Huntress and Transcription. World War II has just ended, and Britain has established the Control Commission for Germany, which oversees their zone of occupation. The Control Commission hires British civilians to work in Germany, rebuild the shattered nation and prosecute war crimes. Somewhat aimless, bored with her job as a provincial schoolteacher, and unwilling to live with her stuffy genteel parents any longer, twentysomething Edith Graham applies for a job with the Commissionbut is instead recruited by the OSS. To them, Edith is perfect spy material...single, ordinary-looking, with a college degree in German. And theres another thingthe OSS knows that Ediths brother went to Oxford with one of their most hunted war criminals, Count Kurt von Stabenow, who Edith remembers all too well from before the war. Intrigued by the challenge, Edith heads to Germany armed with a convincing cover story: shes an unassuming schoolteacher sent to help resurrect German primary schools. To send information back to her OSS handlers in London, Edith has crafted the perfect alter ego, cookbook author Stella Snelling, who writes a popular magazine cookery column that embeds crucial intelligence within the recipes she collects. But occupied Germany is awash with other spies, collaborators, and opportunists, and as shes pulled into their world, Edith soon discovers that no one is what they seem to be. The closer she gets to uncovering von Stabenows whereaboutsand the network of German civilians who still support himthe greater the danger. With a unique, compelling premise, Miss Grahams Cold War Cookbook is a beautifully crafted and gripping novel about daring, betrayal, and female friendship.

Post WWII spies, ex Nazis and recipes? Yes, this book manages to blend all these into one great story. Enjoyed this book very much.

Of course I ended up putting together a list of the books I read during 2020 (3 stars and above) instead of catching up with all things blogging... Whoops? 😅🤣 Now I'm curious: how many of these have you read? 🤔 https://www.listchallenges.com/books-featured-during-2020-on-its-all-about-books

ICantImReading I‘ve read 26 of these! 🙂 3y
vlwelser I love these things for some reason. I made it to 32. 3y
yvo_about_books @ICantImReading yay that's excellent! 😁 3y
yvo_about_books @vlwelser I agree; these lists are highly addictive for some reason. 😆 You got a really high score! 3y

This was a good read! I would‘ve loved more about the post WWII era, but it was still good! I don‘t know why I was surprised that I got hungry reading it since there‘s “cookbook” literally in the title, but heads up, reading SOME of the recipes at the beginning of the chapters will make your mouth water 🤤 A solid 4 star read 👍🏻

Tamra Must check out! 4y

Late to the party, but thanks for the tag, @Texreader 😘

💐Tagged. A different but worthwhile read.
💐Absolutely outdoors until it gets too stinking hot. Especially once the frangipani starts blooming and the view from our patio is spectacular.
💐 Not doing any. I‘m terrible at reading challenges because I tend to go where my whimsy takes me. Haven‘t done a photo challenge in awhile. Need to do that again.

MoonWitch94 Thanks for playing 🐣💐😊🐇 4y

A really excellent, at times gut-wrenching novel. Set in Germany after WWII, so a bit different from the many wartime novels I‘ve read the past few years. It takes some interesting twists and turns. The plot is too complicated to give a short enough account, but it does involve recipes and menus. Well worth the time. Highly recommended.

Lynnsoprano @BookishMarginalia Thanks! I didn‘t even think about that. I just wanted a picture to tie to the cookbook title, but I have so many! This is just part of six cookbook shelves. I have no self control in that regard 😄 4y

I think this is going to tick a lot of my boxes. It‘s #nextup. I‘m trying to read things already on my Kindle, not add any more books. We‘ll see how long my resolve lasts 😂

susurran Covers and titles like this grab me immediately, I'm such a sucker for a Normal Person Becomes a Clever Spy yarn. Adding this to my TBR stack! 4y
Lynnsoprano @susurran I‘m the same. One chapter into this, and I‘m already hooked. 4y

Thank you to Bookmarks and @HarperPerennial for sending this tote and two arcs from the Spring Book Club Social! It was so fun online that I can imagine what it would have been like in person! The back of the tote has books refitted with the word olive! Just fun!

DGRachel I think I have that tote (or one very similar)! Harper did a thing where if you bought at least three of their most recent olive editions you got the tote for free. 😍 5y
