The Space Between Worlds
The Space Between Worlds: A Novel | Micaiah Johnson
143 posts | 100 read | 1 reading | 78 to read
A multiverse-hopping outsider discovers a secret that threatens her home world and her fragile place in it--a stunning sci-fi debut that's both a cross-dimensional adventure and a powerful examination of identity, privilege, and belonging. CARA IS DEAD ON THREE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-FOUR WORLDS. The multiverse business is booming, but there's just one catch: no one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying--from diseases, from turf wars, from vendettas they couldn't outrun. But on this earth, Cara's survived. And she's reaping the benefits, thanks to the well-heeled Wiley City scientists who ID'd her as an outlier and plucked her from the dirt. Now she's got a new job collecting offworld data, a path to citizenship, and a near-perfect Wiley City accent. Now she can pretend she's always lived in the city she grew up staring at from the outside, even if she feels like a fraud on either side of its walls. But when one of her eight remaining doppelgangers dies under mysterious circumstances, Cara is plunged into a new world with an old secret. What she discovers will connect her past and future in ways she never could have imagined--and reveal her own role in a plot that endangers not just her world, but the entire multiverse.

Unpopular opinion but I just didn‘t like this. I would get interested and then it lost me and it just kept going like that for me. I was bored for most of it and didn‘t like the characters. The story honestly felt familiar to me and I just didn‘t love it.

Book 1 of 4 for #20in4 and book 4 of 10 for #10BeforeTheEnd

I really enjoyed this ride! The character and world building were incredible. The idea of going to doppelganger planets and seeing how the people changed is such an interesting concept. There were a couple of things that I didn't really understand - most notably I didn't really understand the mechanics around the jump but I am sure that is a me problem.

Glad I got to this one finally!

This uses the concept of the multiverse in a really interesting way, to explore how small differences in circumstances and personal choice change people. The characters in this books are vivid, flawed and engaging. The plot has some solid twists and turns. The themes deal with complex ethical questions. Maybe not for those who like hard science in their SF, but for those of us dying for some good adult SF, it's a strong pick.

Saw this recommend on booktube with the very nice Del Ray cover on the right. Went to check the sample and was confronted with the hideous H&S UK cover on the left. I was viscerally repulsed. Wondering if it's just me or do other ppl find it hideous. Feel really sorry for the author.

I really enjoyed this. Definitely twisty but not too gimmicky sci fi. I loved Cara as a narrator and her journey was fun to watch. I liked that she was a survivor but the interesting part for me was watching her definition of survival change.

Nicole Lewis is quickly becoming one of my favorite audionarrators.

HAPPY #BOOKSPIN DAY TO ALL WHO CELEBRATE!!!

I'm pretty excited about these two because they are not chonky bois and I've been really looking forward to the tagged for ages but never got around to putting it in my to read rotation yet. I've been slotting in new titles from my list based on page count but I may have to be extra careful about what I put in slot 2 since it seems very popular this year!

Thanks you to @TheAromaofBooks for hosting.

It‘s always surprising—pleasantly so—to read a story in a familiar subgenre that feels like something you‘ve never read before. Multiverse stories all (or almost all) have in common an exploration of identity, of what makes us is. And this one does that, of course, but it stands out for the distinctive voice of its protagonist, and the way she moves not just between worlds, but within the world she inhabits.

There‘s the marginalization of PoCs in a multiverse world with countless earths and doppelgängers. There‘s faith gone awry and bisexuality not multiversally acceptable. There‘s characters dead on one earth but alive with slightly altered motives on other earths. And Cara traverses these earths in her goal to become a citizen of a cooler city from whence she came. I‘m won‘t remember any details this time next week.

⭐️⭐️ This book has a promising start. I love doppelgänger stories and multi-verses. But about 1/2 way through, the story completely dies. All of a sudden I was confused, didn't understand what I was reading or who the characters were. Complete lack of execution. I would feel dread when I picked it up to read. I tried to backtrack, thinking I missed something, but no, it just lost its way. #botm

Uneven and ultimately disappointing. An intriguing premise that failed in execution. My two main issues: (1) there‘s no real plot. The MC just stumbled around reacting for a large chunk of the book. No driver, no motivation, nothing. (2) there‘s no science in this “Science Fiction” book. Not even one mention of physics, just that multiverse travel was “figured out” by this genius guy. 🙄 I skimmed the last 1/3 just to finish it.

tokorowilliamwallace I didn't realize there was a BOTM reading challenge....

Where do I find it on the website/my account? Is it just documenting and marking what you have read of what you have ordered on there?
3y
Beachesnbooks @tokorowilliamwallace Yes, it keeps track of all the books you pick and then you can mark them as read & rate them! If you have the BOTM app it's under the "bookshelf" tab! 3y
tokorowilliamwallace @Beachesnbooks, yes I realized it knows what's on your bookshelf, because it asks me all the time to go ahead and rate what I've ordered. But what's the reading challenge part of it? Is there something else you have to do? 3y
Beachesnbooks @tokorowilliamwallace The reading challenge is just how many BOTM books you read in a given year, how many are debuts, and different genres. If you read the set number of books in each of those categories, you win a prize (this year was socks). The app tracks those automatically when you mark books as read. 3y

Traveling between parallel worlds is possible, but only if the version of you from that universe is already dead. Because rich white men tend to live until old age many poor PoC youths are brought in to gather data from these counterpart earths. This is what happened to Cara, who happens to be a poor bisexual black woman who is VERY good at her job.

Johnson's writing is flawless. This book hits hard and fast and is so completely worth it.

With the beautifully detailed world building and the great characters I felt in the beginning that I was going to love this one. Sadly, it became a little monotonous after the halfway point and I found myself not as interested in the trajectory of the story.

I'd try something else by this author though in the future because there was great potential with the writing.

So this was labeled sci-fi. Nope. Not really.

The summary was intriguing!!

The sci-fi elements were few & far between & only explored superficially.

It‘s a drama, subtle racial segregation, political posturing, class warfare, sapphic love story that felt very YA.

Characters were a bit flat & the romance felt forced.

I was disappointed that this was not categorized correctly. It wasn‘t what I expected so stars were lost.

I feel like sci-fi plots are meant to be dramatic in some way. And unfortunately this novel was a letdown. The author gave a half hearted ending. The worlds were interesting. The live interest I was rooting for. But in the end the book falls flat.

I can‘t tell you enough how much I loved this! I wish I read it earlier and I want to read it again! We follow Cara, a traverser. She lives in a world where interdementional travel has been discovered and implemented; the one catch being you cannot visit a world where you still live so only a select few are able. Action packed and thought provoking and filled with all the various types of love you can think of.

Maybe i‘ve become too impatient as a reader but i‘m past the first chapter and feeling very meh. The author is throwing a lot of exposition my way for world and character building sake, but since it isn‘t integrated into the scenes i‘m reading it doesn‘t stick.

4/5⭐
This was unlike anything I've read before. So complex, but so easy to follow. An intriguing scifi that is character driven while also being thrilling and suspenseful. The writing is beautiful. The world(s) is gritty and dark. Just when I thought I knew which direction this story was heading in, it would change course.

Multiple Universe travel.
Two very different worlds.
One very flawed traverser causing havoc.

TheSpineView I know a lot of people loved this book. I love character driven stories but I never connected to the MC and ended up bailing at over half way. 4y
brittanyreads @TheSpineView I get that. At times I didn't want to pick the book up because I didn't care about her story and choices she was making. Her reasoning and attitude left me scratching my head a lot. I finished mainly because it was botm. 4y
