An excellent idea & the concept. The diagrams/drawings are fantastic - even a few pages that unfold for a much larger images.

I so very much wanted to enjoy this - even borrowed from hubby‘s shelves. The explanations are so oversimplified that it makes reading difficult, imo. I really disliked & fail to understand the name changes (i.e. bathroom to water room🤦🏻‍♀️)

I've spent a lot of my life worried that people will think I don't know enough. Sometimes, that worry has made me use big words when I don't need to.

The idea is so clever; I wanted to love this book, but it's physically too big and the font is too small and the flow of information makes things difficult. Also, sometimes I came away understanding something l e s s than when I started.

May have spent a slightly large amount at the bookstore yesterday... Very late birthday gift for my daughter who turned 5 in January and somewhat belated anniversary/early birthday gift for my husband.

Stuff and things explained using only the 1000 most used words in the English language. It's a mess, but a fun mess. And I finally found out how dishwashers work, so that's a plus.

Having spent the past two weeks submerged in trying to find my ancestors, I have basically not read anything at all. Last night I found out a relative of mine immigrated to the US in 1890 and the bafflement has turned me to the Thing Explainer. Let's see if this can explain everything. 😂

I'm checking out this book that my best friend gave my eldest little reader for his birthday, while I hang out with my youngest little reader. I've been a fan of xkcd for 10 or 11 years, so I'm delighted by this book and I can't wait to read it with my kids. Munroe uses only the thousand most common words to provide simple explanations for how things work. #raisingreaders #scienceisfun

#TBRtemptation post 1! All of my fellow librarians were ecstatic when this big, cool number showed up in Receiving, so I am too ?! This book is done in the Up Goer Five style--it explains basic and complicated things through drawings and only the 1,000 ("ten hundred") most common words. It's a great coffee table book for folks to ooh and ahh over! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

Okay, I love squirrels. And I love that there are random squirrels throughout this book. This squirrel is on the page explaining "Boxes That Make Clothes Smell Better."

Pick for sure! My kids were given this at Christmas by a friend and it is pretty fantastical. All kids (8th grade, 5th, and 4th) learned something from it.

This is why I can never move...plus 3 shelves elsewhere and about 14 crates in the basement. And yes, I've culled.
