"Nell Barber, an expelled PhD candidate in Biological Science, is exploring the fine line between poison and antidote. Her mentor, Dr. Joan Kallas, preoccupies her thoughts. Nell frequently finds herself standing in the doorway to Joan's office despite herself. Surrounded by an ex, a best friend, a boyfriend, and a husband, the two scientists are tangled together at the center of a web of illicit relationships, grudges, and obsessions. The six are each burdened by desire and ambition, and as they all cross each other's paths on the university campus, the tensions created set in motion a domino effect of affairs and heartbreak. Nell slowly fills her empty apartment with poisonous plants to study and begins to keep a series of notebooks, all dedicated to Joan. She logs her research and how she spends her days, but the notebooks ultimately become a painstaking map of love. In a dazzling and unforgettable voice, Rebecca Dinerstein Knight has written a spellbinding novel of emotional and intellectual intensity"--

I absolutely HATED the way this book was written or I guess the way the story is being told. It might be for other people, but not me. I read like 60-80 pages (I already took the bookmark out).

Okay I wasn‘t sure about this going in but by the end I abaolutly loved it. The writing was so poetic and so full of surprises. Plus Jenny Slate was the voice actor for the recording and it was SO GOOD

Yet another #recommendation from @ReadingEnvy in the sub genre “academic fiction”. There‘s also some romance.

Side note: walking and reading is a great way to get some activity in! #academia

ReadingEnvy Not just academic but science! :) 3y
Nute Academic, scientific fiction. I‘m here for that!🙂 Stacking! @ReadingEnvy 3y

My January reads! Ten books — one of which was over 1,000 pages, thank you Brandon Sanderson — and no audio as I‘m trying an audiobook-free year. I know, scary; but I was overusing them to check out of my life, so this is a self care thing!

Hex was a particularly delightful discovery! I loved the weird, funky writing and all the plants, poisons and witchy-ness. The relationships weren‘t my fav; I wanted more plants! ☠️

Suet624 Really smart of you to see that you were checking out. I have been noticing that in my life too. 4y
Linsy @Suet624 Thanks! It was a long time in coming. I tried to reign myself in last year, but I tend to be a bit all or nothing, unfortunately. I‘m already feeling more checked in! 4y

Cool concept, well written, well developed narrative voice, but it‘s just not for me. Obsessive devotion is a lot more interesting in theory than on the page. And while the grad school types and tropes rang true, nobody in academia talks to one another like they do in this book - no one on EARTH talks like these people do. I hope Nell finds success in love and botany but I‘m not going to stick around to see!

Absolutely loved the narrative voice and the unique, quirky, insightful writing. Excellent narration by Jenny Slate in the #audiobook. The protagonist Nell's obsession with her older professor Joan felt very real and very queer. I wanted a bit more story wise about the poisonous botanicals and less about the romantic entanglements, especially the two men who were unworthy of all the women. #QueerBooks #LGBTQBooks #LGBTQ

Great cover, ok story about obsession, both professional & personal, in the world of academia. Told with almost clinical detachment, interspersed with moments of real emotion, the story follows Nell, a failed PhD student, as she & others orbit around a charismatic professor. What could go wrong? Discussions about poisonous plants & antidotes were definitely the highlight of the book. Well-written but not particularly memorable, a borrow not buy.

Tonight‘s reading...

Cinfhen Gorgeous cover 🧡BTW: are you still in touch with @ElishaLovesBooks I haven‘t heard from her in awhile & was just hoping all is well 😊 4y
TracyReadsBooks @Cinfhen 😳 I‘m so sorry I just saw this! I am still in touch with Elisha. I chatted with her a couple of weeks ago and she was doing well. She was particularly excited about the libraries reopening so she could better feed her reading habit! She posts a little more frequently on Instagram if you are there. 4y
Cinfhen I‘m not on IG but I‘m glad to hear all is well 😁please, send her my regards 💕 4y

ElishaLovesBooks @Cinfhen Thanks for checking in!! We‘re all ok here- getting a little nervous about sending daughter #2 to Israel because of this crazy pandemic! How‘s the family? I hope everyone is well ♥️ 4y
Cinfhen Hi @ElishaLovesBooks 👋🏽Honestly, I think it‘s safer here and if all the girls are going to arrive on the same group flight and quarantine together it should be fine. But I totally get the hesitation. It‘s definitely crazy times. Thank G-D we‘re all well but I miss my kiddos in the states and I‘m bummed that I can‘t travel 😥It‘s hard being so stationary. You have my email if you need anything on my end. 4y
Cinfhen Thanks Tracy, for passing along the message 💕 how was the book???? (edited) 4y
ElishaLovesBooks @Cinfhen She‘s going to Tiferet-I‘ve been super impressed with them so far-the plan is for them to all quarantine together! The not traveling is so hard-I can‘t visit my parents and it really sucks. And we‘re also anxiously awaiting what the school year will look like around here. Thank G-d for books and the library! Sorry @TracyReadsBooks for hijacking this post! 😘 4y

Is 4% in too early to say you love a book? Also, I didn't realize Jenny Slate narrated the #audiobook! I find her voice very sexy so what a nice surprise.

May Round up Part 1: Hex was the biggest surprise for me, I loved it, but overall, all of these were decent. I didn‘t love Necroscope, and was super disappointed in Dead Astronauts.

This is a bit insane but I loved the narrator & her way of seeing the world. The writing is surprising and funny. In the same year of Real Life, it was fun to read another novel featuring a science grad student fumbling through the world in the circle surrounding their existence, only here the narrator is speaking most of the time to her dissertation advisor, and all of this takes place after a labmate has died of a poison absorbed in the lab.⤵️

ReadingEnvy I didn't realize until near the end that I have this author's previous novel sitting unread on my shelf. Well that just got bumped up the list. 5y

Bailedbailed

I hate bailing on books, but I seem to have trouble with the whole female millennial protagonist who just doesn‘t give a fuck theme. I want to like it! I see the humor! But I find it exhausting. This one didn‘t work for me. Tbh - also bailed on My Year of Rest and Relaxation and Motherhood (Sheila Heti) for the same reason.

fleeting Oh no, I've been eagerly waiting for this one! 5y
PNWBookseller85 @fleeting you should still try it! I really think this is a very subjective thing - I just didn‘t like the style. 5y
IrisMessenger I have a copy, I was going to try it out! Maybe I‘ll connect with the don‘t give a fuck attitude. But yeah, I‘ve avoided My Rest an Relaxation because it hit a little too close to home...... 5y
PNWBookseller85 @MediaKing I‘m curious to know what you think if you give it a try! 5y

I gave this my best shot. The use of language is poetic and beautiful, but I just don‘t want to spend any more time in the mind of this mentally ill obsessive. The plot is just not that interesting. I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
