To save the world and our future, Sigma Force must embark on a dangerous odyssey into an ancient past whose horrors are all too present in this page-turning thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author James Rollins that combines cutting-edge science, historical mystery, mythology, and pulse-pounding action. For eons, the city of Troy--whose legendary fall was detailed in Homer's Iliad--was believed to be myth, until archaeologists in the nineteenth century uncovered its ancient walls buried beneath the sands. If Troy was real, how much of Homer's twin tales of gods and monsters, curses and miracles--The Iliad and The Odyssey--could also be true and awaiting discovery? In the frozen tundra of Greenland, a group of modern-day climatologists and archaeologists stumble on a shocking find: a medieval ship buried a half mile below the ice. The ship's hold contains a collection of even older artifacts--tools of war--dating back to the Bronze Age. Inside the captain's cabin is a magnificent treasure that is as priceless as it is miraculous: a clockwork gold atlas encircled by an intricate silver astrolabe. The mechanism is signed with the name of its creator, Ismail al-Jazari, a famous Muslim inventor considered to be the Da Vinci of the Arab world--a brilliant scientist who inspired Leonardo's own work. Once activated, the moving globe traces the path of Odysseus' famous ship as it sailed away from Troy. But the route detours as the map opens to reveal an underground river leading to a hidden realm underneath the Mediterranean Sea. The map indicates that this subterranean world is called Tartarus, the Greek name for Hell. In mythology, Tartarus was where the wicked were punished and the monstrous Titans of old, imprisoned. When word of Tartarus spreads--and of the cache of miraculous weapons said to be hidden there--tensions explode in this volatile region where Turks battle Kurds, terrorists wage war, and civilians suffer untold horrors. The phantasmagoric horrors found in Homer's tales are all too real--and could be unleashed upon the world. Whoever possesses them can use their awesome power to control the future of humanity. Now, Sigma Force must go where humans fear to tread. To prevent a tyrant from igniting a global war, they must cross the very gates of Hell.

The Last Odyssey was the usual far-fetched, high-octane action as the team rattle around the Mediterranean in search of a lost Bronze Age civilisation. Is the story utterly ridiculous? Yes. Did I get swept up in it anyway? Also, yes 😂 #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

Kowalski stared challengingly at the commander. “Looks like Mother Nature just demoted you."

Kowalski just gets better with every book. ? Glad this book is getting me out of a reading slump. ?

You can always count on James Rollins for a rollicking good “save the world” adventure, but he has outdone himself with The Last Odyssey. Imagine that all those horrible monsters from Greek mythology were real AND they‘ve been biding their time in an underground world, awaiting release. Then add deceitful senators & priests, smart scientists & brawny heroes and you‘ve got a winner. #12BooksOfChristmas Day 2

This is the first James Rollins novel I‘ve read and it was amazing! I couldn‘t put it down! Every chapter leaves you wondering, wanting to know more. I love history and mythology, so having that intertwined into an action packed thriller was perfect for me. Definitely a pick. I‘ll also be reading more of the Sigma Force novels for sure!

Another great Rollins book in his Sigma Force series. Following Odysseus‘s steps, the gang tries to find the entrance to hell before the bad guys do, who hope to start an apocalypse. The beginning of the book about an ancient ship trapped in Arctic ice was heart-pounding. However, I felt like the bad guys never really had an idea of what they were looking for, or else they‘d have been better prepared. So not his best, but thrilling nonetheless. ⬇️

About midnight last night I finished this one, which completed all three of my goals for the #nutsinmay readathon! Review to come

Andrew65 Wow! All goals completed within three days! 👏👏🍾🥂🙌 5y

My #nutsinmay readathon goal is to finish this ebook (58% to go), Their Eyes Were Watching God audiobook (about 2 hours to go), and The Last Kingdom (17 pages left). I‘m a slow reader and have a lot planned this weekend so I think these are potentially do-able. I‘ll be thrilled if I hit any of them because I‘ve got to get started on my #authoramonth challenge! @Andrew65

Andrew65 Some great book choices, I love Janes Rollins. Good luck 😊👍 I need to get started on #AuthoraMonth too. 5y

Rollins is back on top of his game with this book. It‘s all action (see quote) to prevent an apocalyptic disaster that has its roots in the Golden Age of Islam (my primary focus of history when I was in college), ancient and mysterious science, and more.

Even the prologue is about DaVinci and that annoying upstart, Michaelangelo!

This is why I love James Rollins so much.

Does anyone besides me get all giddy when they see the word “afoot”? To me it portends of action and excitement ahead. Buckle your seatbelt because this next chapter is going to be good! Anyone else?

I also swear in all of the high-adrenaline Rollins books I‘ve read, this is the first time he‘s used “afoot.” I may be wrong but that‘s a word you don‘t forget easily.

Catherine_Willoughby For me its "foreboding" - always gets my full attention lol 5y

Baako was one of my favorite characters ever in a Rollins book from what was, I think, Rollins‘ best book in the Sigma Force series. It sure sounded like we might get to meet Baako again and here he is mentioned in chapter 2. I, too, loved that big hairy ape.

MaleficentBookDragon That was also my favorite Sigma book. 4y

So excited to finally read this one. And I‘m going to make it meet a #readingeurope2020 challenge. Just not sure which country. Chapter 1 is in #Greenland.

GingerAntics The chapters are all in different countries? Oh my. I just looked, this one is back up to 14.99, but if it‘s good, I‘ll deal with it. 5y
Texreader @GingerAntics Chapters just state where events are taking place, his books often span the world. Chapter 1 was one of the best openings yet for his books. Chapter 2 is in #Iceland. (edited) 5y
GingerAntics Hm, maybe the one of his I already have (Crucible I think) should be my next book. 5y
See All 13 Comments
Texreader @GingerAntics Sorry to say I didn‘t think Crucible was one of his better Sigma Force books. I love when he delves into historical mysteries to solve some modern-day problem. It touched on witchcraft but the book was really about AI. It was good but not nearly as good as some of his other books. I wouldn‘t recommend it as a starting point to the series. 5y
GingerAntics Damn 5y
Texreader @GingerAntics Ok here‘s the deal. When you settle I‘ll start a lending library and send you his books in order. That‘ll help you keep track of the character development too. What do you think? (Unless you‘re leaving the country, that‘s a bit out of my price range.) (edited) 5y
GingerAntics I can send them back whenever I get done? lol 5y
GingerAntics lol no, we‘re just going to Minnesota. I can‘t figure out where to start with that series. They‘re not numbered. Which one should I start with? 5y
Texreader @GingerAntics Deep Fathom or Sandstorm. I read the first five or so books out of order and it was ok. But after that I was glad to read them in order. Minnesota! I guess you‘ll escape this heat! I was hoping to meet you at some point but that‘s a bit of a long drive! 5y
Texreader I looked up Rollins on Wikipedia and it has the list in order. Just let me know which one, where, and when, and I‘ll mail it to you (when I go back out into the real world that is). @GingerAntics (edited) 5y
GingerAntics Yeah, that‘s like an 18 hours drive. I wouldn‘t recommend it. We lived in Minnesota until I was 13 when we moved here. Now we‘re moving back. I‘ve got friends here so I‘ll probably come back to visit, so we can probably arrange something. 5y
Texreader @GingerAntics Yes we can bookrate them back and forth. 5y
GingerAntics Oh the Black Order is Book three. That one looks really good. There‘s a bookrate? Yeah, for now I think it‘s us and our own books for the time being. lol 5y

Daily Deal! I‘ve been waiting for paperback for this book from my favorite author so decided to get this one ahead of time.

GingerAntics Looks like Black Order is also $4.99 right now. 5y
Texreader @GingerAntics Did you get it? I found I have an extra book of his I‘d be happy to send you but it‘s from a different series. Not sure you want to start yet another series? 5y
GingerAntics Not yet. I may have to get it any the regular price. No new physical books right now. We‘re getting ready to move in 9 days and a huge part of the battle is the books. 5y

Texreader @GingerAntics oh yea! Good luck! If it‘s any consolation, when the husband moved to America he had to bring his library of 1000 books (to combine with my 1000 books). He had to box them and put them on a ship. We‘ve moved only a few times since but you can imagine the size of our library since that was more than 30 years ago! 5y
GingerAntics 😳 don‘t move...just don‘t move ever again. 5y
Texreader @GingerAntics 🤣🤣🤣 One more move, to the house we bought at the lake that we hope to retire to. 5y

1. Many. But the tagged book is the latest in this series and I‘m behind! And it‘s my favorite author!

2. Reading Dante and Shakespeare in middle school; reading Dostoyevsky‘s Crime and Punishment in high school. I knew I was a real “reader” when I dared take on these way difficult reads at a young age

3. Han Solo

Texreader @PatriciaU Did it feel like he was wrapping up the series? The title has had me worried for a while 5y
PatriciaU The ending leaves some loose threads, and one big one. There is a lot of Gray and Seichan adapting to parenthood here, but it doesn‘t get in the way. 5y
