From the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of The Imitation Game and bestselling author of The Last Days of Night: a jury on a murder trial is deadlocked when a young woman manages to turn the tide to acquit; now, a decade later, she must face the consequences when a fellow juror is killed and she is the prime suspect. It's the most sensational case of the decade. Fifteen-year-old Jessica Silver, heiress to a billion-dollar real estate fortune, vanishes on her way home from school. Her teacher Bobby Nock is the prime suspect after illicit text messages are discovered between them--and Jessica's blood is found in his car. The subsequent trial taps straight into America's most pressing preoccupations: race, class, sex, law enforcement, and the lurid sins of the rich and famous. It's an open and shut case for the prosecution, and a quick conviction seems all but guaranteed. Until Maya Seale, a young woman on the jury, convinced of Nock's innocence, persuades the rest of the jurors to return the verdict of not guilty, a controversial decision that will change all of their lives forever. Flash forward ten years. A true-crime docuseries reassembles the jurors, with particular focus on Maya, now a defense attorney herself. When one of the jurors is found dead in Maya's hotel room, all evidence points to her as the killer. Now, she must prove her own innocence--by getting to the bottom of a case that is far from closed. As the present-day murder investigation weaves together with the story of what really happened during their deliberation, told by each of the jurors in turn, the secrets they have all been keeping threaten to come out--with drastic consequences for all involved.

The cover drew me in and the story kept me going. Two mysteries are trying to be simultaneously solved while jumping back and forth between decades in an easy-to-follow fashion. My first legal thriller was meh but this one was much better. Is Bobby guilty? Who killed Jessica? What about the following mysteries? Gripping until the end!

It took me a long time to finish this one because it just didn‘t keep my attention well enough to devote much time to it at once. I am glad I continued reading it; the ending tied up a lot of loose ends and was satisfying. It‘s told in alternating timelines, past and present, about the trial that changed all the characters‘ lives. The past sections switch between all the jurors, and the present focuses on Maya, the juror who influenced the others.

Wow, I'm so glad I read this book! The mysteries were great, the storytelling and character depth were excellent, and the social commentary was interesting and on point! This is definitely underhyped, and is now one of my favorite mystery books of all time.

Enjoyed this mystery within a mystery. There were a few surprises tossed in at the end that were quite a stretch. But I liked the courtroom/jury room bits.

This was a great legal thriller. There were lots of characters, but each one had their backstory and a unique set of motivations. I guessed the solution of one of the mysteries, but the other one surprised me. Also, what the group did after the first mystery was solved, although a bit far-fetched, was thought-provoking and fit the story.

A page turner that had me still trying to figure it out at the end. It also had me questioning what I know about our justice system. Would definitely recommend!

A jury on a murder trial is deadlocked when a young woman manages to turn the tide to acquit; a decade later, she must face the consequences when a fellow juror is killed and she is the prime suspect. This was a page-turning and twisty plot which questions our jury system and modern justice. Moore has done an excellent job with this book and I look forward to reading The Sherlockian by him. Recommended.

Wow what a thrill ride this was. There are so many twists and turns in this story. JUst when you think you have it figured out bam, another twist, The plot is quite pacy and builds to an ending that leaves you just sat there thinking wow. I found myself wondering what I would have done in her situation. That ending is so well done though. The story is well written and gives an interesting insight into the jury after a trial. #netgalley 4*

I can‘t believe I ever put this one down...but life sometimes. This was a non stop crime drama with multiple mysteries to unravel. Told in the present from the perspective of Maya, a defense attorney who was a former juror on the sensational trial ten years prior. Her current story is told excellently by weaving in the past perspectives of her fellow jurors when one of them turns up dead at a reunion. Highly recommend!

November #bookspinbingo wrap up. Not as good as I hoped, but still pretty decent for me. Between covid and a couple of bummer books, my reading was slower than I had hoped earlier on in the month. About 70% in the tagged book, so I‘ll try and finish that this week and 20% into The Broken girls so just a square short of the bingo...kinda. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Best underrated book of the year!!! Wow! This book had one of the best hook beginnings ever! This book was not anything I expected. There were twists everywhere up until the very last page! As someone who works in the legal system I held off reading this for a while and now I am kicking myself for waiting. Dang this was fascinating for a piece of fiction.

Graham Moore is such a talented writer. No matter the topic he always comes across as an expert. I have loved every book and this one was no exception. It would make a great book club pick there are so many hot topics in the pages. What I found the most interesting was looking at a case from a jury perspective and how each person can reach the same verdict for a different reason and they are all right. This book gave me a lot to think about.

Sometimes a good legal thriller is exactly the book I need. I'll admit that the ending becomes a bit unbelievable, but it works within the confines of the story.

It's a fast paced read that kept me intrigued through the last page without making me overthink anything so that I could just enjoy the journey.

Velvetsun @shellleigh33 I did. I will double check the tracking. I was just getting ready to mail off the next book as well. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 4y
shellleigh33 @Velvetsun was your ever able to check on that tracking bc I still haven‘t got the book. I hope it didn‘t get lost in the mail or sent to the wrong place 🤷‍♀️😩 4y
Velvetsun @shellleigh33 post office still had it listed as ‘in transit to the destination” until Saturday - when it changed to “pending”. Then the book, in a plastic Usps bag....not the original padded envelop...was returned this morning. I‘ll get it back in the mail on Wednesday with the next book as well. I‘m sorry for the delay. 😕😕😕 4y

In courtrooms all across this city, Maya had seen people get verdicts they‘d wanted, and she‘d seen just as many get ones they didn‘t. But the verdicts had nothing to do with the truth. No verdict ever changed a person‘s opinion. Juries weren‘t gods. 👨‍⚖️🏢⚖️

56 books total. It was difficult to categorize because I don't know if how I perceive people is how they identify. I have read 10 books by black people, 4 books by nonblack LatinX people; I don't know any of these authors identify as a POC. I'm Latina, and I'm white. I read 1 book by an Asian man, 0 non-LatinX indigenous, and 1 LGBTQIA+ collab w/ various authors. The Holdout is my favorite book published in 2020. @chasingom @Emilymdxn

It is easy to see why the author is an award-winning screenwriter. I inhaled this in a way I haven‘t with any book in months. Really crisp plotting and characterizations. If you have been slumping or struggling to focus on books over the past few months, this is a good mojo reclaimer. 4🌟
