Who doesn‘t love a story about a murderous robot with a conscious?

Murderbot is a SecUnit sent on intergalactic space missions with the humans who hire the spacecrafts. But unlike the other units, which must obey every command, Murderbot can think for itself. It just chooses to help so it will remain undetected.

In this shortish novel, the first in the series, we‘re introduced to Murderbot and it‘s thinking.

Great story, entertaining scifi.

1. I read almost all of the Murderbot books in August, but I've tagged the first because it ignited the spark for me!

2. All of them! Paper because of the tactile experience, ebooks because I can read in the dark and pack "light" while still taking a shelfload of books, audiobooks because I can read while doing housework.

3. Probably mystery/thriller/horror these days.

My elder child has been recommending this series to me for ages, and I finally picked it up, and I really liked it! Murderbot is so honest and self-reflective, which sounds weird but makes total sense on the character. Now to procure the second in the series!

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 Okay! Now I know what all the fuss is about. This was a very entertaining story. Most of this series is currently free on Audible (Yay for excellent free stuff.) This security droid calling itself Murderbot has attained free will. But rather than murdering anyone, it would much rather watch soap operas. I‘ll continue this series and I highly recommend that all science fiction fans start reading or listening.

When a security android slash synthetic slave goes rogue, it becomes a wild card in a sci-fi adventure. However, the best part of the book is the part of this android being very humane, shy, sarcastic and sacrifices himself to safe the humans who for the first time treat it decently.
Will go straight to the second book in the series

The Murderbot series reread begins! Having bounced around in this series universe for a while, this first book definitely feels like just a taste of larger discussions about autonomy, enslavement, the nature of a self, corporate greed(lack of ethics), but it's honestly the perfect length introduction to Murderbot's POV. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? The marvelous mix of the anti-social IDGAF attitude (arguably masking trauma) with heightened emotional vulnerability where its emerging preference for specific humans is concerned, which presents as some combo of herding cats and leading fluffy ducklings. 9mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/4 So far, I've lived up to my promise to take notes/start a detailed character map, because Murderbot's disdain for the details of human appearance and drama means I started to lose track through these books of who's who and how they're connected to each other. I anticipate tracking such things will improve my reread by adding some depth and complexity that may have been missing the first time, or got lost in the gaps between when I could get subsequent books from the library. 9mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 Even if each adventure does still read as its own mission, I'm glad to be along for the ride. Pretty sure I'll be buying each volume after each reread. If you haven't picked them up, I highly recommend!

Robotswithpersonality @julesG I honestly didn't realize paperback was an option until this second read of the first book. When I went to look up the second in my local bookstore, only the hardcover was showing as an option...so might be getting hardcovers by default! Curious about texture now - the protective mylar on library dust jackets means I'm often in the dark about how they really look/feel without the mega-shiny. 9mo

The plot was intriguing but aside from Murderbot, everyone else had a paper-thin personality.

Doppoetry A friend recommended this to me and I was more inclined to listen to it because it was short.

I've read this type of story before, the type of story where the author always asks “When does AI become more than AI“ While I understand the limitations of around 100 pages it really does feel too wishy-washy. My other criticism is the “LGBTQA“ representation that felt more like an off-handed joke than actual rep and it was embarrassing to read.
9mo
Doppoetry Another thing that kills a narrative for me is when the main character continually repeats that they “don't care“. They don't care about the setting, they don't care about this and they don't care about that. It kills the enthusiasm and feels like the author is shooting themselves in the foot when they refuse to engage with their world or characters. 9mo

I am not usually a Sci-Fi reader, but picked up this novella after seeing it recommended and I was really impressed. It was both smart and funny, plus a little bit sassy. Of course it also had some action and the inclusion of morality issues gave it some depth. Being Sci-Fi, it had a lot of technical stuff, but it never felt overwhelming or hard to follow. I have added the second in the series (Artificial Condition) to my TBR list. 4.5/5 stars.

HeatherBookNerd I‘m not big on Sifi either, but I‘m completely obsessed with the series and I‘m burning my way through. (edited) 10mo

Just listened to this novella while playing some Mortal Kombat. I liked this, Murderbot is definitely A Mood. It poses the question ever present in the genre since I, Robot; when does artificial intelligence become intelligent life? But Murderbot might not be ready for peopling. It‘s really taking time away from their entertainment streaming time.

Mehso-so

A little found family story, with a grumpy anti-social introvert with a heart of gold, a hacked comm unit, and inorganic weapons built-in to its body in the center.

I think I liked this enough to continue, at least on to Book 2. It was sweet, and endearing, with a healthy dose of side-eyed humor. But I wasn‘t *immediately* captivated or enthralled the way I expected to be. It felt, very much, like a piece — not a whole. 🦾👇🏻

monalyisha 1/2: I‘ll admit to skimming sentences which included words like “beacons”, “safety units” and “launch vehicles,”; “mapping functions”, “hoppers” and “systems analysis.” I keep trying to get into sci-fi but it very clearly does not come naturally. 🙈 11mo
monalyisha 2/2: This was an #AuldLangSpine pick from @BarbaraJean, who actually listed Book 7 on her list. Because they‘re short and there‘s so much love for the series, I‘ll optimistically give the next installment a shot — maybe on audio, and with crossed fingers! I‘m not ruling out the possibility that I might come to love the Diaries and look back on this so-so rating like, “Who was she? I hardly know her.” 😆 11mo
julesG Audible might have the audiobooks for free for subscribers. There is also a GraphicAudio version for the first four novellas. The second book - as GraphicAudio - is my current commute audiobook in the car. 11mo

monalyisha @julesG That‘s good to know! I‘ll look into it. Thanks! 11mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I have a weird theory about Murderbot. I think it should have been one book. I found the individual books to be fine but as a whole I loved the series. They work only together. And I am not a series person, I usually read one maybe 2 and am done. 11mo
RamsFan1963 I was so-so on the first book also, but from the second one on, especially in audio, it's one pick after another. 11mo
BarbaraJean Haha—yes, Murderbot is quite definitely sci-fi! I‘ll be interested to know if the second one works better for you. I feel like there‘s less setup needed and perhaps fewer of the technical terms. The audiobooks are really good, although I switched to print halfway through the series because I tend to glaze over with the technical terms when it‘s being read to me! 11mo
BarbaraJean @ChaoticMissAdventures I like your theory! I have a hard time keeping track of what happened in specific installments; it does feel more like a whole than specific episodes. And one of the things I love so much about the series is how Murderbot‘s character deepens over the series. 11mo
Adventures_of_a_French_Reader @monalyisha The second novella of the series was so-so for me, but I liked the 3rd one, and I'll soon start the 4th one. The novellas are quite short, so it's a plus ;) 11mo

How are fans of the books feeling about this??

I am excited to see it come on screen, and am so glad it is going to be a series and not a movie. I am also excited Apple is carrying it, they are doing some amazing work.

I am just not so sure about Alexander Skarsgård being the lead?

If you are a fan how did you picture Murderbot?

Ruthiella I pictured Murderbot as female, but I probably won‘t watch the show anyway. And he is an appealing actor. 11mo
julesG Murderbot is caring. Very caring. So, if I had to gender it at all, I'd stand with @Ruthiella - it is more female than male. I keep hoping that Apple keeps its visor down and doesn't show Murderbot's face until the last minute. Which means that I'm hoping Skarsgard plays Ratthi. 11mo
julesG And I really want to see a more mature woman for Dr Mensa, but can't think of a fitting actor right now. Well, I am not sure about this. If I ever watch it, I'll probably watch it with my son (super fan) and we'll complain about all the changes the TV show made to the original material. Then we'll sulk and go have an emotion in private while watching the wall. I'm curious to see how they do Sanctuary Moon though. 11mo
See All 16 Comments
Hooked_on_books I totally picture Murderbot as female. I love the idea of this being done, but am worried. 11mo
Mrs_B I‘m agreed, I pictured Murderbot as being female or androgynous. I do think they‘ve not got the casting right here. I wonder what the author thinks about this? 11mo
Ruthiella @julesG I picture Sanctuary Moon as being totally cheesy! That would be fun to recreate. The cast should be super ethnically diverse. In my mind , that‘s the universe Wells created. People are still good and bad, but their allegiances are to corporations, not countries or cultures. 11mo
julesG @Ruthiella Yes, to all you wrote. To me it's a diverse cast, too. And that's why I think making the books into a TV show hinges on the casting. 11mo
julesG @Mrs_B Wells hasn't said anything on Instagram about it, just shared the news that Skarsgard was in the series. 11mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Ruthiella @julesG @Hooked_on_books I think it is so interesting how people pictured Murderbot. I pictured them as a larger more masculine nonbinary person who is racially ambiguous. I wonder if people pictured them as a woman because they were really into soap opera shows? Which is often seen as feminine. Did I picture them as masculine B/C security is often more masculine? 11mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I reread this in September and now I cannot remember if the books described them at all. 11mo
Ruthiella @ChaoticMissAdventures Murderbot is never described other than technical capabilities and its effort to appear more human than secunit. I think my feminine assumption came from the fact that the author is female. 11mo
julesG @ChaoticMissAdventures a SecUnit doesn't have a gender. It's not a SexBot and Murderbot emphasises it often. My son and I base the "if we had to assign a gender to Murderbot, it would be female" on the caring aspect - never on the soaps. Murderbot is described as a high tech killing g machine. It describes itself as having short hair (which it later grows out) and I'm fairly certain most people around Murderbot see it as either androgynous or male 11mo
julesG Even the aliases Murderbot uses are androgynous/gender neutral. So, if you asked me to select an actor for Murderbot I'd be inclined towards Charlize Theron starting with Mad Max Fury Road and going towards Old Guard. 11mo
Hooked_on_books I actually never thought of the shows Murderbot watches as soap operas. For me, I feel like there are characteristics (introverted, socially awkward, blunt) that I personally really identify with and I‘m female, so I pictured them more female. 11mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Hooked_on_books @julesG @Ruthiella It will be interesting to see how Skarsgård pulls it off, overwhelmingly I am hearing no matter how people pictured Murderbot they for sure didn't picture someone like him. But I know he is a big nerd so I have hope he does well with it all - I think he is also a producer. 11mo
julesG Do you think he's the same level nerd as Henry Cavill? If so, this could go well after all 11mo

Murderbot hacks its own governor module which means it doesn't have to obey orders anymore and protect the people it is supposed to protect as a SecUnit. But it doesn't care much for murder especially after finding out it can now access the combined feed of entertainment channels carried on the company satellites. "As a heartless killing machine, I was a terrible failure."
I enjoyed this short one immensely.

The plot was interesting, it reads like an episode of a series. And most importantly, when finished, we want to read what comes next...

This has been on my list forever and I‘m so happy to have ticked it off this #scarathlon - short, original, funny and interesting. My only complaint was that it could have been longer really to get more depth in.

kwmg40 The 5th book in this series is a full-length novel and it definitely provides more depth and complexity. 13mo

This GraphicAudio was good, but the audiobook was better, IMHO.

5/5⭐ Absolutely delightful. Murderbot's voice instantly draws you in. I read this novella in one sitting because the perfect pacing made me have to know what was going to happen. #roll100

This was really tough because I read a few awesome books this month including Magic Claims, Star Splitter, and The Kaiju Preservation Society. But I picked the tagged because it is a masterclass in writing in 149 pages. Martha Wells is simply brilliant.

Thanks for the tag @The_Penniless_Author 😀

In only 149, pages, there is a lot packed into this SciFi novella. Incredible character development of a part organic, part inorganic android, and through first POV no less, asking the underlying human question of "who am I." The set-up, the tension, the conflict—this novella is a masterclass in writing. Simply brilliant.

Book 3 for #20in4

ChaoticMissAdventures I am reading this series now! I love how she has created Murderbot ❤️ 1y
wanderinglynn @ChaoticMissAdventures I had so many people recommend this series to me. I‘m so glad I finally read book 1. I‘ve now ordered the rest of them! 1y

Even better the second time around!
I love Murderbot.
A book about a security robot who has hacked his controls, downloaded thousands of hours of soap operas and must still do his job around humans who he doesn't enjoy.
This lighthearted, unique and fun novella is a ride and worth all of the awards it has gotten! This time I am reading the entire series 😀

julesG My son would tell you, wait till your 27th re-read. 🤣🤣🤣 He loves the Murderbot novellas. 1y
ChaoticMissAdventures @julesG oh my! Well, at least it is short? Has he convinced you to read it yet? 1y
julesG The other way round. I introduced it to him. And then had to tape my mouth shut so I wouldn't give anything away. 1y
ChaoticMissAdventures @julesG Yes!!! Love it when a parent introduces a favorite book to their kiddos!! 1y
