Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?: Big Questions from Tiny Mortals About Death
Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?: Big Questions from Tiny Mortals About Death | Caitlin Doughty
Best-selling author and mortician Caitlin Doughty answers real questions from kids about death, dead bodies, and decomposition. Every day, funeral director Caitlin Doughty receives dozens of questions about death. The best questions come from kids. What would happen to an astronauts body if it were pushed out of a space shuttle? Do people poop when they die? Can Grandma have a Viking funeral? In Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?, Doughty blends her morticians knowledge of the body and the intriguing history behind common misconceptions about corpses to offer factual, hilarious, and candid answers to thirty-five distinctive questions posed by her youngest fans. In her inimitable voice, Doughty details lore and science of what happens to, and inside, our bodies after we die. Why do corpses groan? What causes bodies to turn colors during decomposition? And why do hair and nails appear longer after death? Readers will learn the best soil for mummifying your body, whether you can preserve your best friends skull as a keepsake, and what happens when you die on a plane. Beautifully illustrated by Diann Ruz, Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? shows us that death is science and art, and only by asking questions can we begin to embrace it.

I got selected to be on the jury for a murder trial (+ conspiracy to distribute illegal narcotics). 2 defendants; 4 charges to consider for each. Aside from all of the other feelings & responsibilities associated with that, it also put a real cramp in my reading style! No commute = no audiobook. I also could NOT read “Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?” while discussing (& viewing evidence of) an actual dead body.

Anyway, it‘s been a full two weeks. 😱

Amiable My son was on a jury trial in Maryland earlier this year -- not a murder case, though. Carjacking with a weapon (however that gets charged). He said it was pretty interesting. I always get excused from jury duty the minute the lawyers find out my husband is a firefighter -- I think they believe that public service employees all think the same and I would automatically side with the police? It makes me mad. Because I do have a mind of my own. 🙄 13mo
monalyisha @Amiable I disclosed that my stepfather (who raised me) is a homicide detective, my uncles are police officers, and my grandfather was a police officer, and they STILL kept me around! I was floored! If they‘d asked if I could still be unbiased, I would have said yes…but they didn‘t even bring it up! 13mo
Amiable @monalyisha Ha ha! Maybe it's because RI is so small -- if they started eliminating anyone who is related to a police officer they'd never be able to seat a full jury! 😃 13mo
monalyisha @Amiable I think it might be because my family‘s in MA. But it still seemed risky — like, what if a subconscious bias existed? That being said, I am a very good and fair little doobie. They could probably tell. 😅 13mo
quietlycuriouskate Eeek! I was selected for the jury on a gang rape trial several years ago. The case got thrown out of court very early on. I don't know the circumstances, I was just hugely relieved to be spared the ordeal. 13mo
monalyisha @quietlycuriouskate Ugh, how horrible all around. Hopefully, some justice and healing was found. 13mo

The author reads the book herself, but she also does plenty of youtube videos and a blog, I think. Anyway, she does a good job and I find this stuff fascinating! She does a good job of mixing in some humour to go along with the rest of the explanations, as well. There is some science and history, as well, depending on the question/answer

This is a really great read if you're curious about death and the macabre. I personally feel Doughty should be considered an expert in her [somewhat unusual] field. This book is a treasure trove of cool Q&As from kids. There's also awesome illustrations in this book! Quite a few things I already knew, but loads of stuff I didn't. Highly recommend if you're interested in unusual reads.

Can't wait! 💀⚰🥀

It's only about 200 pages, so I should easily start and finish tonight, if my eyes don't get tired. I love her and have been looking forward to it (and the other I purchased.)

Caitlin Doughty, a mortician with an appropriately morbid sense of humour, answers questions from kids. “We can't make death fun, but we can make learning about it fun.” Hello putrefaction! Hello mummies and cryogenically frozen corpsicles! This #audiobook, narrated by the author, makes for entertaining and informative family listening.

The book is a Q & A style format, with kids asking all the questions adults are too afraid to ask. These questions range from “Do dead bodies smell?” to “Can I give my grandma a Viking funeral?” And the classic “Will my cat eat my eyeballs?”

Caitlin answers these questions with scientific facts, and does not sugarcoat it. She‘s honest but she answers with finesse and a bit of humor. It answered so many questions I never knew I had until now.

I really enjoyed this one. Doughty‘s usual brand of humour mixes really well with the kinds of questions she gets asked by children. It is aimed at kids (middle-grade), but I enjoyed it as an adult, and it does seem like it would be a good read for curious youngsters too - Doughty manages to be both matter-of-fact and gentle as she explains.

I really enjoyed this read, it was light and funny at times. Not morbid at all. Caitlin Doughty is a mortician who answers questions from children about death. It was really entertaining and I also learned a lot of interesting things.

Caitlin Doughty writes in a way that is accessible, honest and amusing which makes this topic less scary and sad. I will definitely be reading her other books. #nonfiction #essays #science

I quite enjoyed this interesting, snarky, sometimes funny, sometimes gross, sometimes funny & gross at the same time, look at death. I learned some things from these questions asked by children & while it‘s definitely not a book for #audiosouping it made my commutes during a busy couple of weeks entertaining. My first from this author but I‘ll look for more.

I loved this book. Caitlin gives very practical (and amusing) answers for questions that kids have about dead bodies. The tone was great and made it a very quick read. I learned so much, which I enjoy when it's presented well. I highly recommend this book, but if you're pretty squeamish you might want to pass it up.

DGRachel I am really looking forward to this book (despite being squeamish). Mom bought it for me on Small Business Saturday and I'm saving it for 2020 so it can count for MountTBR. 😂 I'm not sure buying books in November & December with the intent of saving them for MountTBR is really the intent behind MountTBR, but it works for me! 5y

I saw this on Litsy, & it sounded interesting, mainly because I work with kids & know the hilarious/weird questions they can ask. This book grossed me out in parts (I‘m squeamish about blood, etc) & isn‘t something you want to read while eating. I did learn a lot, the illustrations are fun, & the author is funny. My kindle still showed 20 pages left when the book ended, so it was a little abrupt. #TBRRead #wintergames @Clwojick @StayCurious

“This book would not exist without hundreds of questions from morbid little angels.” All of the morbid little angels in my life are being gifted this book. They will love it!

BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘ve been wondering whether my 9 year old granddaughter would like it. She‘s all about science, and her older sister died when she was five. So she might like to have answers. Would she be too young, though? 5y
JacqMac @BarbaraTheBibliophage I am giving it to my niece. She‘s 8. I think it would depend on the kid. But her explanations are full of science. They are simple, yet honest. You can always read through it and see what you think. 5y

Quirky (in positive sense) book about questions that we all have about death, written in her typical humorous style and with respect to the topic. Book is intended for younger readers, but it‘s still interesting for adults, well - at least it was interesting to me ...

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Caitlin Doughty once again schools us on the taboo. Children ask weird, but often poignant, questions, so the clever premise of addressing kids‘ questions about death led to some incredibly interesting, sometimes macabre, information. And dare I say this is one of the funniest books I‘ve read all year? Dark and morbid humor works for me. The cool illustrations are a charming bonus. One of my top reads of the year for sure!

Scochrane26 I will prob read this. Kids are hilarious. In therapy, they will often have me laughing, but then I forget to write it down for a future book. 5y

One of my favorite books of 2019. Oh my! These little bundle of joys gave Caitlin something to write about that's quite clear. Reading this book made me think about how as adults we miss the creativeness gift we once had as children. The questions are definitely thought-provoking, interesting, and thoroughly sourced. The list of sources at the end of the book is surprisingly interesting.
