Quirky (in positive sense) book about questions that we all have about death, written in her typical humorous style and with respect to the topic. Book is intended for younger readers, but it‘s still interesting for adults, well - at least it was interesting to me ...

This was my last book for #Nonfiction2019 challenge, #SomethingPersonal

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Congratulations! Great job! And some great books in there too. 5y

Finally wrapped up #nonfiction2019 with tagged book as #somethingpersonal — My info was part of Equifax breach, and someone has tried using my SSN. But I didn‘t find this book very helpful though, I knew the basic stuff already, and the rest seemed overly complex. I didn‘t feel like there was a lot of “low hanging fruit” that would be easy to implement.

Thank You Melissa for the awesome challenge!!!

Megabooks Great job!!! 5y
Cinfhen Congrats on completing!!! I‘m already looking forward to next year @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 🤓 5y

UPDATE!

✅ Something Personal ➡️ Savage Appetites

I picked this book because it's about women's obsession over true crime stories & how they were affected by it. I'm not obsessed with the crime but am more interested in the investigation & forensics side of this genre.

I almost bailed on this book but glad that I finished it. I ended up enjoying it much more than I thought I would!

I wanted to tag the Patti Smith Audible Original from my Bingo board...but it‘s not in the database. Anyway, here‘s my progress on #nonfiction2019. It‘s been a good year for NF for me!

@Riveted_Reader_Melissa

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yay! Great job!! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thanks! I‘m going to use Unmentionable for the #somethingpersonal square. No idea about the others, though. Yet! 6y

My first book of the year was “Becoming”, so it‘s #SomethingYouPick
Then I decided I‘d read some of my #MountTBR of Obama/Trump books before they got too outdated, so I followed up with:
“Fear” many #UnlikelyCharacters
“Shade” #SomethingWithPicture
“Thanks, Obama” #SomethingWithPolitics

And then:
“Sapiens” #SomethingWithHistory
“ColorOfLaw” #SomethingWithLaw
“We‘re Going to Need More Wine” which is VERY #SomethingPersonal

#Nonfiction2019

Lindy Zooming along. Good work! 6y

A sobering look at not just the arson & resulting fire, but also of the man accused of starting it. On Black Saturday there were over 400 seperate fires in Victoria, this is the story of just one of them, the Churchill fire, and the subsequent trial & conviction of an autistic man for arson. Highly emotional & very well written. #NonFiction2019 #SomethingPersonal #Pop19 #ReadABookDuringTheSeasonItsSetIn #ReadHarder #ABookOfANonViolentTrueCrime

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds like an emotional read, but a good one. 6y

Up next is my #NonFiction2019 #SomethingPersonal & #Pop19 #ReadABookDuringTheSeasonItsSetIn This is about the Bkack Saturday fires on 7thFeb 2009,which were deliberately lit.Australian bushfire storms are living breathing things, they sound like a freight train coming at full speed, they block out the sun & turn the world orange & black. They even generate their own weather called a pyrocumulus cloud that rains liquid soot & fire bullets. Terrifying.

Samplergal Just downloaded this one. Sounds so interesting. Thanks! #somuchfornotbuyingbooks 6y
Cinfhen Those photos are INTENSE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥Book sounds super fascinating 6y
gradcat I, too, think the photos here are really dramatic. I added this book, and I want to suggest one to you that has a similar subject matter. Just a tip! 6y

Lizpixie @Samplergal #somanybookssolittlefunds💸 @Cinfhen Book so far is brilliant. I‘ve also read one called Kinglake350 by Adrian Hyland, also about Black Saturday & also brilliant. I was caught in a bushfire when I was 15, it was terrifying & I‘ll never forget it. Some years the Blue Mountains are ablaze so intensely that we get embers & ash here, 47kms away from the fire. Some summers are just full of dread, waiting for that orange glow in the sky🔥 6y
Lizpixie @gradcat thanks for the tip! It‘s already in my litsyTBR👍 Those are actual photos from the fires in the book, Australia in high summer is a dangerous place. 6y
Cinfhen This book isn‘t available yet in USA kindle 😫😫im gonna check with #BookDepository 6y
Cinfhen I did see the other two available on Kindle 😄 (edited) 6y
Cinfhen I can‘t imagine ever being caught in a bushfire - how terrifying that must have been 6y
Freespirit I need to read this 6y
Lizpixie @Cinfhen I think book depository has it, if not I can send you a copy if you‘d like. It was terrifying being caught by one, my boyfriend at the time & I were fishing in the Hawkesbury river at a remote spot that was down a long dirt track in bushland. We woke to the smell of smoke, piled it all in the car & started driving out but within a minute we had trees on fire both sides of the car & leaf litter on the track itself in flames. 6y
Lizpixie I remember soaking shirts with our water bottles & stuffing them around the windows(old car with not so great rubber seals!) We had to crawl down the road, what took us 5 mins the day before, took us an hour to travel. We finally got through but the car had scorch marks all over it & the rubber parts had warped & melted from the heat. Scariest car ride I‘ve ever had.😱 @Cinfhen 6y
Cinfhen That‘s something you never forget and I‘m sure you walk away knowing your life was sparred. I‘ll check out Book Depository - thanks!! Shipping to & from Australia is expensive especially to Israel. It‘s not worth the cost but thanks for the offer 😘 (edited) 6y
gradcat Your story of being caught in a bushfire sounds utterly heart-stopping...so glad you & your boyfriend made it out okay! 6y
Lizpixie @Cinfhen no worries Cindy, I‘m happy to do it if you change your mind. I‘m halfway through and it‘s utterly compelling. @gradcat thank you, it‘s given me a total dread of bushfires since, the fact that it was one way out(a tiny dirt track just out of Wisemans Ferry NSW))made it more terrifying. We seriously thought about abandoning the car and jumping in the river at one point! 6y
gradcat 😱 So frightening. 6y

💧💧⬅️ That‘s me, turning into a puddle on the floor after reading this book. It is moving, real, and inspirational. We need books like this, for the kids out there who see themselves in Jarrett‘s story.

I grew up with 2 parents who loved and cared for me, but I always wondered about the ones whose blood I share. The pic above is when I met my birth father for the first time. My birth mother was a heroin addict, and died before I could meet her.

alisiakae Fills the prompt for #Booked2019 #comicorgraphicnovel but i also recommend it for anyone looking for a book for the #addiction prompt. It is definitely the best book I have read so far this year. 6y

Cinfhen I‘m moved in so many ways by this post. Thank you for sharing 😘 6y
JennyM ❤️ 6y
Blaire Thanks for sharing a bit of your story. I think there are many kids who could use this book. 6y
Reggie Yeah, I totally cried on this one. Especially the panel right after his grandparents tell him what they tell him after they come back from Disney Land. Great review! 6y
alisiakae @TrishB Thanks! @Cinfhen 💖💖💖 Aww, thanks! 6y
alisiakae @Blaire I‘m always very open about my story, although it is a bit hard to talk about with such a small character limit! 😂 From what I hear from my grandparents and those who knew her, my birth mother was a lot like Leslie in the book: an intelligent, good person who made some bad decisions, & struggled with the consequences for the rest of her life. My BM got clean, but then injured her back, and became dependent on opiates. That is how she OD‘d. 6y
alisiakae @Reggie That was a hard one! That, and some of the panels when you could tell Leslie was using again after a period of being clean. And the Author‘s Note at the end should definitely not be skipped! 6y
Blaire @4thhouseontheleft I live in West Virginia now and I think your story and this book would be familiar to anyone living here. It seems people are no more than a degree removed from the impact of addiction. I appreciate your openness. Going to recommend to several friends who have adopted or are fostering kids who have similar backgrounds. 6y
