In Flanders Fields and Other Poems
In Flanders Fields and Other Poems | John McCrae
27 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
In Flanders Fields, the iconic poem which gives its title to this collection of poems and selected prose, is one of Canadas and the worlds best known poems of the Great War. It was written in 1915 by Canadian John McCrae, an artillery man, poet, and medical doctor, upon the death of a friend and fellow soldier during the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915. This is a faithful reissue of the Canadian first edition of McCraes writings, originally issued by his friends in 1919 in his honour and memory. It includes the best of his poetry and selections of his letters from the front lines together with a thoughtful essay of appreciation by his friend and fellow medical officer, Sir Andrew Macphail.

As a milspouse, I‘d really rather we not continue to “take up the quarrel,” but I do appreciate the way McCrae so pointedly presents the dead here, as individuals who were so recently just like us, and expecting to go on.
Hooah, my friends. Missing you.

#OnThisDay in 1915 Army Doctor John McCrae sat and penned the words:
"In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below."
Some say he then crumpled up the page and threw it away, until it was saved by a fellow officer. McCrae would continue to work on it for months until its publication later that year.

Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields. 🌹❤️🌹❤️

My family doesn‘t have many who have served, we‘re mostly farmers and teachers and nurses. That doesn‘t mean that we don‘t appreciate and remember the sacrifices made by others. Today is a shared day of remembrance and recognition for many of us. While the reason for today is a horrible one, I‘m thankful for the bond it creates with our friends in Europe, and elsewhere. We need that as much now as we did then. Never forget.

On this day, Armistice day. A moment to remember, think of all the brave men and women.

I do three things on Armistice day, I read John McCrae's poem, I listen to Raymond Levesque's song and I seek the Heritage Minutes about WW1 I offer you The Nurses of WW1 https://youtu.be/00n67k-f7Yw

I am so proud that Julie Payette is right now GG.

"Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."
