Three more books for #ReadingAfrica2022 in September but it‘s getting more difficult each month!

🔸 Rwanda: An ordinary man
🔸 Tunisia: In extremis
🔸 Eritrea: Africa is not a country (but this book probably fits all African countries)

TrishB Doing brilliantly! 2y
squirrelbrain You‘re not far off! 2y
Librarybelle So close! You can do it! 2y
jenniferw88 Yeah... you won't be surprised to learn that I've practically abandoned this challenge! My problem is that I sign up for too many at the start of the year 🤣 oh well there's always #readingtheamericas2023 🤣🤣🤣 One of these days I will actually complete it! 2y

Another three countries for #ReadingAfrica2022 but like @Cinfhen mentioned, it‘s getting tougher to find books - and to enjoy them 🤷🏻‍♀️. My August additions:

🔸 Guinea-Bissau: Anos Ku Ta Manda
🔸 Uganda: Walking the Nile
🔸 Comores: A fish caught in time

Megabooks Doing awesome!! 👍🏻👍🏻 2y

🔸Angola: A General Theory of Oblivion
🔸 Eswatini: When the ground is hard
🔸 Mali: Monique and the Mango Rains

Bookwomble Wow, you've covered a lot of ground! Well done 🌍👏😊 2y

🔸 Chad: The journey
🔸 Equatorial Guinea: La Bastarda

In February I read only three books for #ReadingAfrica2022 but I am still on track so far with a total of 11 countries. The ones I read this month are:
? Malawi - The Boy who harnessed the wind
? Zimbabwe - We need new names
?Cape Verde - The Last Will & Testament of Senhor da Silva Araújo

Bookwomble The Last Will and Testament... is the only English-language book I've seen from Cape Verdi, I think, so I've got that one ear-marked for later in the year. 3y

A good start to #ReadingAfrica2022 in January. I got to 5 countries in Africa.

Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Nigeria, Libya, Morocco.

If you are playing along how did you do?

Bookwormjillk Nice! Slow start for me, only two. I'm hoping for better this month. 3y
DGRachel I managed 13 in January because I wanted to give myself a cushion for months that I didn‘t want to read anything on my list or months when it took me 4 weeks to get through a book. 3y
Andrew65 @DGRachel Wow! Brilliant! I‘m trying to aim for 1 a week. 3y

I finished my rough list for #ReadingAfrica2022. I know the final list at the end of the year will have some changes, but I found at least one book for every country, including the bonus countries. I learned some lessons from #ReadingAsia2021 and picked kids books and graphic novels wherever I could, for quick box checking successes. Here‘s the list for Togo - Western Sahara. (Post 4 of 4)

BarbaraBB Thank you so much for these posts. I can‘t wait to start and see what we‘ll read! 😘 3y
DGRachel @BarbaraBB Doing these made me more excited about the challenge. I think Tall Blondes has been on my TBR since it was published, so 20+ years. I know my parents gave me the copy for Christmas. It will be good to check that off! 3y

BarbaraBB I can‘t believe you did this!! This is so incredible helpful. I‘m taking screenshots to compare what I‘ve “chosen” and add books to my gaps! 3y
BarbaraBB I also totally agree on the graphic ones 😃 3y
DGRachel @BarbaraBB I‘m glad it‘s helpful to others! My spreadsheet tracks if I can get a book from the library or on audio, and this way I can see if a book is out of print or only available from the UK. I‘ve ordered a couple of used books already and I‘ll have to order one from Book Depository because it isn‘t available in the US. I love the planning stage. 🤩 3y
BarbaraBB We would have been bff‘s in real life 😂, I too keep a spreadsheet with a column on where to get the books. I compare prices on BD, Amazon and a Dutch website for used books 😉 3y
rwmg I must admit I was unaware of the change of name until Eswatini was listed in travel bans due to the omicron variant and I was thinking "Where's that?" 3y

Prepping for #ReadingAfrica2022! I have a decent amount of books that‘ll get me going and cover some countries.

From the top down: Zanzibar - Zimbabwe - Sudan - Libya - Mauritius - Egypt - Cape Verde - Angola - Togo - Burundi - South Africa - Somalia - Senegal - Rwanda- Nigeria - Mozambique

You can still join the challenge! Fill in the form here: https://forms.gle/tKdCCsxttXxcex6p9

erzascarletbookgasm 👏👍 That two doorstoppers though 😬 3y
Velvetfur Hmmmm I've got one so far! (Nigeria) I'll collect some more and see if it's going to be do-able! Because so far I'm currently reading book 45 of this year and listening book 46, I read/listened almost double that last year, so still not sure if I can manage all the books for Africa.... I'll work on it though! 3y

Jess861 Some interesting looking books in that pile. I really enjoyed Purple Hibiscus! I put quite a few books on my birthday and Christmas list so I'm interested to see which ones I end up getting to help with #ReadingAfrica2022 3y
Soubhiville I‘ve been pulling my books that fit as well. Planning for challenges is fun! I‘ll have to look for that Elizabeth Strout book, I like her ☺️. 3y
Librarybelle What a great stack! I‘ve been slowly collecting books as well! 3y
Laughterhp Did I actually sign up for this challenge? I know I thought about it and even looked at the sign up sheet, but don‘t know if I filled it out. 3y
Nute I hope that when I really start looking into this that I find that I already have many books on my bookshelves like this lovely stack that you have, Ms. Barbara.🙂 3y
Cinfhen Need to take a pic!!! Research 🔬 💚Thanks for sharing 3y
kamoorephoto Part of your #ReadingAfrica2022 challenge should be getting everyone to learn to point out all the African countries on a map. Hardly anyone can; I think it‘s the hardest continent to learn, geography-wise. My 14-yr old boy decided he would make a point of doing all these online challenges to learn countries on maps and he finally got 100% with Africa. I still can‘t do it. (edited) 3y
Hooked_on_books Nice! Always good to get some ideas. 🤓 3y
Singout I‘ve made a list of what‘s available in audio from my library: certainly not every country but I wouldn‘t be able to do that anyway! Zambia recommendation: The Old Drift. 3y
BarbaraBB @Velvetfur No need to read them all, just read what you feel like and what is possible! 3y
BarbaraBB @Jess861 Looking forward to what you‘ll get! 3y
BarbaraBB @erzascarletbookgasm Absolutely. They scare me a little. But there‘s no avoiding the tagged one: I can use it for #Booked2022 too 3y
BarbaraBB @Soubhiville Me too and I‘ve heard this book is about Somalia! 3y
BarbaraBB @Laughterhp I don‘t know and don‘t feel obliged. I just saw in my last post that you were interested - that‘s why I tagged you! 3y
BarbaraBB @Nute I was surprised and I hope you‘ll be too when you start looking for them! 3y
BarbaraBB @kamoorephoto You‘re so right. When you‘re participating you definitely learn a lot about the countries and their geography; these challenges make you Google a lot too. That‘s what I love about them. And your 14-year old is amazing, so cool!! 3y
BarbaraBB @Singout Thank you for that recommendation, I was hoping for some! I‘ll stack! 3y
Laughterhp Haha okay! I don‘t think I did yet lol, so good to know 3y
BarbaraBB @Laughterhp One more to add to your new bujo 😂😉? 3y
kamoorephoto @BarbaraBB Have you seen this - Can you name a country on a map?! https://youtu.be/kRh1zXFKC_o 3y
BarbaraBB @kamoorephoto I hadn‘t seen that. It‘s horrible. My first thought was: people in Europe (where I‘m from) can mention many countries but I‘m probably wrong 🙀 3y
CaitZ Thank you for this 3y
rockpools Wonderful! I‘m So looking forward to this 😊. I‘m still going to set a target of 15 countries for myself, as I‘m not good at reading at this volume, but I can‘t wait to see people‘s recommendations as we go through! 3y

@BarbaraBB @Librarybelle Question on the challenge-is it “cheating” to use the same book for multiple countries? I have several that touch at least three countries.
#readingafrica2022

BarbaraBB I wouldn‘t think so. Africa is BIG and it takes all we can to finish this challenge 😉 3y
DGRachel @BarbaraBB It is a daunting challenge! 😅 3y
Texreader I was a stickler during #readingeurope and insisted on reading one book per country. Then there was #readingasia and that‘s pretty impossible partly because of the dearth of books for some countries but because there are so many countries. So I caved and now I‘m all for reading books that cover multiple countries. 😁 3y
See All 8 Comments
DGRachel @Texreader #readingasia was the first I participated and I did the one per country but it was hard and I forced my way through a lot of stuff I hated. Just looking at the #readingafrica list feel so overwhelming and I doubt I‘ll finish if I had to do one per country. I‘ll try, but if I don‘t HAVE to, there will be less stress. 3y
Librarybelle I think the beauty of this challenge is to do whatever works for you! Next year I think will be harder than this year in that not as many books and authors are represented exclusively for a specific country. There may be books that cover several countries that are really the only way to read about those countries! @BarbaraBB 3y
BarbaraBB @DGRachel @Texreader @Librarybelle I completely agree, we should make it as easy and fun as we can since it is going to be a tough challenge otherwise! 3y
