I'm catching up on what I've read since May. We were learning about reference materials and the kids' loved the atlases. We read Grandfather's Journey and visited some of the locations in the book. The standard in the picture is taking notes from a book, a very talented kindergartener labeled and colored this map.

This is a photo of my grandfather reading! He died when I was young so we don‘t have many photos of him. My mother sent me this picture this week and I thought you‘d all enjoy.

Beautiful to me is the little things in life, the cosy reading spot, the clouds forming shapes in the sky, soft rain. I‘m inspired by people who do small kindnesses for others.

Published in 1994, this historical fiction book was very moving. A young boy tells the story of his Grandfather‘s life and his experiences with his cultures and where he has lived. The story follows his grandfather and ends with his own experience with his cultures. This book won the Caldecott Medal. I really enjoyed this book!

These are watercolors! I can‘t believe it. Loved this beautiful story of travel between the US and Japan.

“Grandfather‘s Journey” written and illustrated by Allen Say is a wonderful HF RA picture book. This picture book is about a mans love for two countries, the USA and Japan and his constant desire to go back and forth over the course of his life. UDL principle 2.4 which is promote understanding across language which can be portrayed with this book.

this book was interesting. I liked the sense of adventure and the illustrations but was not wowed by it

Grandfather‘s Journey by Allen Say is my favorite picture book to this day. This heartwarming NF Caldecott winning book tells the story of a Japanese grandfather and his longing for his two homes. All educators should have this book in their classrooms because it will resonate with your immigrant students. An AS is the ideal strategy to use because students will get background knowledge to better understand the book. #UCFLAE3414F19

Grandfather‘s Journey is a HF that won the Caldecott Medal and would be great for a LC in grades 3-5. This book can be used in the classroom to benefit students not only in ELA, but in other content areas as well by providing various topics of diversity.

Towards the end of the book it was very sad to read briefly about how a war began and bombs fell from the sky leaving nothing behind, also was very sad his grandfather never mad it back to California. Sometimes things need to be a little sad to get a message across.

This book is set in the past and talks about a grandfather that came to the new world from Japan but then ended up missing home and returned to Japan then transitions to talks about the grandchild. This is a character that children may not be able to relate to but could learn from. It teaches children events in history from a new point of view.

Grandfather‘s Journey by Allen Say. Genre: NF, Award: Caldecott Gold, TS: RA, IR, PR, SR. I think this book would be a great read aloud and would be great with a social studies lesson about immigration. I also think this would be a great book that ELL‘s could understand. EL: 4. This is my current #favplacetorelax. The chair used to be in my grandpa's office and after he passed away a few years ago, it came to my family. I helped take care of him in his last year as he sank deeper into dementia. We never spent much time together before that but we could always talk about books. Reading in that chair makes me feel connected to him again. Plus it's comfy. #augustphotochallenge #day17
