Grandfather's Journey (Read-aloud) | Allen Say
23 posts | 15 read | 4 to read
When he was a young man, Allen Says grandfather left his home in Japan to explore the world. He began his journey by crossing the Pacific Ocean on a steamship, then wandered the deserts, farmlands, and cities of North America. Allen Say lovingly tells the story of his own familys cross-cultural history in elegant watercolor paintings that earned him a Caldecott Medal in 1994. This twentieth-anniversary edition of the modern classic features read-aloud audio and an introduction by Allen Say.

I'm catching up on what I've read since May. We were learning about reference materials and the kids' loved the atlases. We read Grandfather's Journey and visited some of the locations in the book. The standard in the picture is taking notes from a book, a very talented kindergartener labeled and colored this map.

bthegood great picture and talent for your kindergartener 🙂 1y
mandarchy @bthegood sometimes I have to get a picture so I can remember that the kids did well with the activity. All of them tried and did really great, but this kid is amazing. 1y

Following the #wonderouswednesday prompt from @Eggs ! Thanks for tagging me.

This is a photo of my grandfather reading! He died when I was young so we don‘t have many photos of him. My mother sent me this picture this week and I thought you‘d all enjoy.

Beautiful to me is the little things in life, the cosy reading spot, the clouds forming shapes in the sky, soft rain. I‘m inspired by people who do small kindnesses for others.

jlhammar Wonderful photo! 2y

Published in 1994, this historical fiction book was very moving. A young boy tells the story of his Grandfather‘s life and his experiences with his cultures and where he has lived. The story follows his grandfather and ends with his own experience with his cultures. This book won the Caldecott Medal. I really enjoyed this book!

These are watercolors! I can‘t believe it. Loved this beautiful story of travel between the US and Japan.

Librarianaut I love to share this one with my 3rd & 4th graders- they all get very quiet and contemplative… 2y

“Grandfather‘s Journey” written and illustrated by Allen Say is a wonderful HF RA picture book. This picture book is about a mans love for two countries, the USA and Japan and his constant desire to go back and forth over the course of his life. UDL principle 2.4 which is promote understanding across language which can be portrayed with this book.

carolinem ESOL strategy 11 which is placing language into meaningful context which can be used with this book. This is a great resource for teachers to use with along reading this book! https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/grandfather‘s-journey 5y
carolinem Also this book has won the Caldecott honor as well! 5y
DrSpalding It may look like this book is historical fiction however it is actually about the author‘s grandfather‘s immigration. What genre do you think it is now? Reading is fundamental is an excellent resource. Continue using this in future assignments. 5y

Grandfather‘s Journey by Allen Say is my favorite picture book to this day. This heartwarming NF Caldecott winning book tells the story of a Japanese grandfather and his longing for his two homes. All educators should have this book in their classrooms because it will resonate with your immigrant students. An AS is the ideal strategy to use because students will get background knowledge to better understand the book. #UCFLAE3414F19

karlasanabria1 #UCFLAE3414 The following link provides classroom aids to include in your lesson plan or overall class. https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/grandfather‘s-journey 5y
karlasanabria1 The UDL Guideline I believe would fit with this story is activating or supplying background knowledge (3.1). While the ESOL Strategy I‘d use would be, offering a variety of reference materials at the students‘ instructional level for independent use (29). 5y
Jgolub13 I like how you incorporated your real grandpa into the post. It shows how the story related to your life. I love the idea of incorporating this book, because it shows students what the life of an immigrant really is like. 5y

Grandfather‘s Journey is a HF that won the Caldecott Medal and would be great for a LC in grades 3-5. This book can be used in the classroom to benefit students not only in ELA, but in other content areas as well by providing various topics of diversity.

Zmohammad UDL strategy 9.3 (developing self-assessment and reflection) and ESOL strategy 16 ( integrate reading, speaking, writing activities, and listening) align with the lesson plan and TA strategy to make the students engage with each other for ideas, so that they can show their understanding by writing about their own journey. 6y
alexandracarpenter The cover of this book looks so beautiful with the raindrops! I've never read it before, but after looking at the lesson plan you provided, I will definitely have to check it out for my future classroom. 6y

Grandfather‘s Journey (HF), a Caldecott winner, by Allen Say is a book that can be done with (CR) Choral Reading. Because the sentences aren't too long in this book and vocabulary isn't too advanced, choral reading would be a great way to read this book. This historical fiction recounts the journey of a man's grandfather who moved from Japan to America. The man‘s grandfather after many years misses his native home and goes back only to miss his

Edenmonet home back in America. As the man gets older he understands his grandfather's longing and love for his native home and new home. This book can be read during a History unit on Japan and is very important for students to read because it shows the sacrifices people have made to have a better life. This project can be done with the students older family members to see what sacrifices they had to make to have a better life. 6y
Edenmonet https://www.rif.org/sites/default/files/Support_Materials/FMTDFamilyStoriesShari... The UDL principle would be 3.1, activating background knowledge, and the EL strategy would be 4, Linking the lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge and 14 simplifying my speech by making it slower and redundant.

Towards the end of the book it was very sad to read briefly about how a war began and bombs fell from the sky leaving nothing behind, also was very sad his grandfather never mad it back to California. Sometimes things need to be a little sad to get a message across.

Grandfathers Journey by Allen Say
Scholastic Inc. 1993
This book is set in the past and talks about a grandfather that came to the new world from Japan but then ended up missing home and returned to Japan then transitions to talks about the grandchild. This is a character that children may not be able to relate to but could learn from. It teaches children events in history from a new point of view.

Grandfather‘s Journey by Allen Say. Genre: NF, Award: Caldecott Gold, TS: RA, IR, PR, SR. I think this book would be a great read aloud and would be great with a social studies lesson about immigration. I also think this would be a great book that ELL‘s could understand. EL: 4. Link lessons to students prior knowledge. UDL 8.3; foster collaboration and community. #UCFLAE3414SP18

Jeffersleighann This book is about the child describing his grandfather‘s journey from Japan to America and back. It also shows his grandfather discovering America and the family history that led to the child‘s generation. 7y
DrSpalding Say is a wonderful author. Excellent choice. This book would complement a social studies unit on immigration nicely. 7y
DrSpalding When a nonfiction book is about a person, what is the genre? 7y
Jeffersleighann @DrSpalding A biography (: I think so too, it would work well in a social studies unit. 7y

This is my current #favplacetorelax. The chair used to be in my grandpa's office and after he passed away a few years ago, it came to my family. I helped take care of him in his last year as he sank deeper into dementia. We never spent much time together before that but we could always talk about books. Reading in that chair makes me feel connected to him again. Plus it's comfy. #augustphotochallenge #day17
