The Prison Doctor
The Prison Doctor | Dr Amanda Brown
As seen on BBC Breakfast Horrifying, heartbreaking and eye-opening, these are the stories, the patients and the cases that have characterised a career spent being a doctor behind bars.

Disappointing. Thought I‘d get some genuine insight on what it‘s like being a doctor inside a prison. This fluffy “feel good” look at the women inside makes me want to spend some time inside a British prison. The author makes it sound quite lovely - there are wonderful people to meet and lots of activities to do. The author sounds like a sweet person. I was looking for honesty and reality though 🫤

💛💛💛 A collection of memoirs from a GP working in the British prison system. It was interesting, however as a British GP myself, I found it lacked much substance and depth. These prisoners/patients have experienced horrific hardships in life whether it be domestic violence, child abuse, drugs, sex trafficking, or homelessness, but I didn't feel the book delivered the emotional rawness of these subjects to the reader.

True memoir of a GP who makes the move to work as a prisoner doctor. Another reason to appreciate the wonderful work people in the medical profession do 🌈

Audiobook number 4 and I feel like I‘m getting the hang of this! Today I have been #audiobatching - made a lot of spag bol and butter chicken! 😋

This was a fascinating look at Dr Brown‘s life as a prison doctor, which she came to late(ish) in life after becoming disillusioned with the role of a GP.

What I found most interesting were the differences between a young offenders‘ prison, a male prison (Wormwood Scrubs) and a female prison.

Reviewsbylola This sounds like it‘s my type of audiobook! 5y
Hooked_on_books Welcome to the audio world! I was skeptical of audiobooks for a long time but started dipping my toe in several years ago. Now I LOVE audiobooks! They really expand my reading options, especially now that I can listen to them while I work. I probably listen to 8-10 every month. They rock. 5y
squirrelbrain I was very anti-audiobooks Holly, @Hooked_on_books - and the first one I tried didn‘t help with that situation. Since then though I‘m really enjoying it and hoping to get a job where I can walk to work, so that‘s when I‘ll listen.... just started this one and loving it - it‘s read by Meryl Streep! 5y
squirrelbrain You should definitely try it @Reviewsbylola - although I‘m not sure if it will be available in the US.... 5y

I got about a 1/4 of the way through. Working in a prison myself I know the stresses and trauma it brings. I felt like she was on a bit of an ego boost and found her style of writing quite arrogant. Hats off to her though. Being a prison doctor is not an easy job.

Written with admirable passion, Dr Amanda Brown‘s memoir ‘The Prison Doctor‘ was definitely my cup of tea. I really enjoyed reading about the range of situations that she has to deal with on a daily basis – 5 stars!

My full review is up on my blog now 📚

JillR I thought this was interesting too, although I work with prisoners and their perspective of the healthcare they receive in many UK prisons doesn‘t quite tally with hers so I felt a bit conflicted reading parts of this. 5y
whatrebeccasread @JillR ah! I can imagine how you feel conflicted! My knowledge of the field was almost non existant till reading this one so it's interesting to hear this! 5y

The book just served as a way to stoke the author's ego about how great she is when in truth, she seemed unprofessional at times.

The book seemed dry and I would love some wit in it. The last part of the book where she switched to the female prison flowed better but it had the underlying, I'm better than everyone else.

I listened on audible to the audiobook and the narrator's voice was annoying but summed up the whiney tone perfectly at times.
