An Incomplete Revenge
An Incomplete Revenge: A Maisie Dobbs Novel | Jacqueline Winspear
38 posts | 50 read | 11 to read
In her fifth outing, Maisie Dobbs, the extraordinary Psychologist and Investigator, delves into a strange series of crimes in a small rural communityWith the country in the grip of economic malaise, and worried about her business, Maisie Dobbs is relieved to accept an apparently straightforward assignment from an old friend to investigate certain matters concerning a potential land purchase. Her inquiries take her to a picturesque village in Kent during the hop-picking season, but beneath its pastoral surface she finds evidence that something is amiss. Mysterious fires erupt in the village with alarming regularity, and a series of petty crimes suggests a darker criminal element at work. As Maisie discovers, the villagers are bitterly prejudiced against outsiders who flock to Kent at harvest timeeven more troubling, they seem possessed by the legacy of a wartime Zeppelin raid. Maisie grows increasingly suspicious of a peculiar secrecy that shrouds the village, and ultimately she must draw on all her finely honed skills of detection to solve one of her most intriguing cases.Rich with Jacqueline Winspear's trademark period detail, this installment of the bestselling series, An Incomplete Revenge, is gripping, atmospheric, and utterly enthralling.

I really liked this one, maybe even more than Messenger of Truth, although there is no need to compare. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The 5th in the #MaisieDobbs series of between wars mysteries was heartbreaking several times over. A current case uncovers a tragedy from WWI in small-town Kent. So many themes and connections, lots of growth for our favorite characters. Thoughtful consideration of what being labelled outsiders can lead to. Any book that makes me cry is doing its job drawing me in! By far the best one yet.

Another stellar performance from Winspear. As I've said before and I'll say it again because it bears repeating, this series just improves with age. This was a bit different (although all of Maisie's adventures are unique) in that it involved both a current case and an unexpected 10-year cold case. The present-day case centers around fraud conspiracy while the cold case entails murder, lies and coverups. While both cases were absorbing,

robinb I found the cold case more compelling and heartbreaking.
Winspear's writing is always thought provoking, but this book in particular was a step above for me. There is a theme of fire throughout the story, with multiple connotations, that I found insightful and interesting and also well done in comparison to the character development of Maisie.

Again, wonderful reading on every level. 5/5 stars

kspenmoll I just adore this series- loathe the thought of an end…. Your analysis/ review wonderful (edited) 11mo
robinb @kspenmoll thank you. 😊 The first book almost made me give up on the series. So glad I stuck with it. ♥️ 11mo

My favorite of the series so far! Maisie heads to a small town during hop picking season & finds herself in the midst of a dark secret held since the war. With traveling gypsies, a wealthy cruel landowner, & a rogue arsonist, there‘s so much story to unfold. I loved her relationship w/the gypsies‘ matriarch & having the chance to learn more about Maisie‘s history. The story unfolded beautifully & foreshadows the growing prejudice during the ‘30s.

This is the fifth book in the Maisie Dobbs series which finds Maisie investigating a series of mysterious fires in a small English town full of secrets. I really enjoy following Maisie‘s evolvement as the series moves along and the look at life between the World Wars. There are still many more books in the series for me to look forward to reading yet.

cathysaid I loved this series on audio. 5y

While this wasn‘t my favorite Maisie Dobbs #audiobook, it was still an enjoyable addition to the series. The various story threads just seemed more difficult to follow and stay curious about.

I read more in July than I realized! Not so bad, considering what a busy month it was. Quite a few solidly good reads, with An Incomplete Revenge getting the only ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review. Five of the above were ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, which is still high praise in my book!

First time in a while that I read 0️⃣ non-fiction in a month.

The 5th book in the Maisie Dobbs series, and my favorite so far. I knew the twist in this mystery early on, but I read this series for the characters, not the mystery. Maisie‘s growth in this installment was welcome, and slightly overdue.

Taking on a more serious tone, this book touches on ethnic prejudice, bullying, the effects of being considered an outsider, and herd mentality in a small village in Kent.

This book wasn‘t as exciting as some of the previous Maisie Dobbs books but it was still good. This book had a more serious tone to it. I‘m hoping that since things have happened in this book we will see a change in Maisie in the next book. Still one of my favorite series!

For my #FoxyLady I am going for one of my favourite female characters, Maisie Dobbs. A woman well ahead of her time. There is always an air of mystery about Maisie, as well as a certain Je Ne Sais Quoi! #Rocktober. I just love this series and have read 8 in the past year.

BarbaraBB I‘ll have to look into this, I don‘t know her! 7y
Andrew65 @BarbaraBB They're set after the end of the First World War as people deal with the effect of that war. She is effectively a private investigator . A very cerebral character and some interesting plots. 7y

An excellent read & got me out of the funk I have been in & the mini reading slump I have been in. I do love the Maisie Dobbs books, even without the historical mystery element they have a different & refreshing feel to other crime novels. Yet again the events in this story relate back to the 1st World War despite it being 1931 but I have to say yet again it worked. A momentous event happened in this book which could change things moving forward.

batsy I read a couple of the books out of order and have been meaning to go back to them and read in order. They are quiet, thoughtful books in a way, and that's interesting for a mystery series. 8y
Andrew65 @batsy I would agree with your comments on the books. (edited) 8y

Tonight have started Book 5 in the Maisie Dobbs Series set in 1930s England. I do love this series and the quirky character that is Maisie - certainly a strong female lead for the book. As much as the mystery in this book I am interested to see how (and if) Maisie's personal life develops, which is the biggest mystery of all! Already hooked! And got me out of a bit of a reading slump in the early part of May. #historicalmystery
