Timbuktu
Timbuktu: A Novel | Paul Auster
Meet Mr. Bones, the canine hero of Paul Auster's remarkable new novel, Timbuktu. Mr. Bones is the sidekick and confidant of Willy G. Christmas, the brilliant, troubled, and altogether original poet-saint from Brooklyn. Like Don Quixote and Sancho Panza before them, they sally forth on a last great adventure, heading for Baltimore, Maryland in search of Willy's high school teacher, Bea Swanson. Years have passed since Willy last saw his beloved mentor, who knew him in his previous incarnation as William Gurevitch, the son of Polish war refugees. But is Mrs. Swanson still alive? And if she isn't, what will prevent Willy from vanishing into that other world known as Timbuktu? Mr. Bones is our witness. Although he walks on four legs and cannot speak, he can think, and out of his thoughts Auster has spun one of the richest, most compelling tales in recent American fiction. By turns comic, poignant, and tragic, Timbuktu is above all a love story. Written with a scintillating verbal energy, it takes us into the heart of a singularly pure and passionate character, an unforgettable dog who has much to teach us about our own humanity.

My favorite book thus far in 2018. It is the story of Mr. Bones, a mutt, and his master, Willy G. Christmas. He is a troubled homeless poet, in and out of his mother's home. Mr. Bones is his constant companion. His mom dies. On his last legs, Willy and his dog travel to Baltimore, where we hope his high school English teacher still lives. He wants to give her his life's work and his dog a place to call home. Thanks @Liberty #thewallsareclosingin

A mentally ill homeless man is dying and his dog (Mr. Bones) needs a new human. Never would have read a book about a dog if it was written by anyone but Auster. Mr. Bones is not a husky...they just make my Canadian heart happy.

I've wanted to read this since I heard it mentioned in a Fionn Regan song a few years back. The story is told from the perspective of a dog called Mr. Bones 🐶 #unusualnarrators #anditsaugust

I ❤ this book cover. I also ❤ this story. #marchintoreading @RealLifeReading

"Good begets good; evil begets evil; and even if the good you give is met by evil, you have no choice but to go on giving better than you get. Otherwise-and these were Willy's exact words-why bother to go on living?"

Leniverse Excellent quote! Words to live by. 8y

Spent part of my Labor Day rereading this favorite from Paul Auster. I'm a sucker for any story about a dog, and this one is a great one.
