Area X
Area X: The Southern Reach Trilogy: Annihilation; Authority; Acceptance | Jeff VanderMeer
In time for the holidays, a single-volume hardcover edition that brings together the three volumes of the Southern Reach Trilogy, which were originally published as paperback originals in February, May, and September 2014.Annihilation is the first volume in Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy, Authority is the second, and Acceptance is the third. Area X-a remote and lush terrain-has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; all the members of the second expedition committed suicide; the third expedition died in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another; the members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within months of their return, all had died of aggressive cancer. This is the twelfth expedition. Their group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist, the de facto leader; and our narrator, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain and collect specimens; to record all their observations, scientific and otherwise, of their surroundings and of one another; and, above all, to avoid being contaminated by Area X itself. They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers-they discover a massive topographic anomaly and life forms that surpass understanding-but it's the surprises that came across the border with them, and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another, that change everything. After the disastrous twelfth expedition chronicled in Annihilation, the Southern Reach-the secret agency that monitors these expeditions-is in disarray. In Authority, John Rodriguez, aka "Control," is the team's newly appointed head. From a series of interrogations, a cache of hidden notes, and hours of profoundly troubling video footage, the secrets of Area X begin to reveal themselves-and what they expose pushes Control to confront disturbing truths about both himself and the agency he's promised to serve. And the consequences will spread much further than that. It is winter in Area X in Acceptance. A new team embarks across the border on a mission to find a member of a previous expedition who may have been left behind. As they press deeper into the unknown-navigating new terrain and new challenges-the threat to the outside world becomes more daunting. The mysteries of Area X may have been solved, but their consequences and implications are no less profound-or terrifying.

Finally finally finished this trilogy. Definitely struggled to hold me at many points but I powered through all three. Gd I want to like sci fi more than I do. The final book was cool jumping between characters' perspectives. No satisfying explanation of course but not that mad at it.

If you love weird psychological science fiction then you will love this trilogy. I loved it! All the little connections that happen in this book. And the twists that happen.

If J. J. Abrams, Margaret Atwood, and Alan Weisman collaborated on a series, it might be this awesome.

This collection includes all three novels in the epic Southern Reach trilogy: Annihilation, Authority, and Acceptance....

The goodies!! I‘m really excited about these books- 2 have been on my TBR for quite some time, I can‘t wait to read the tagged book as it was a surprise and sounds really good, and I had no idea George RR Martin had written a children‘s book! And I love all the goodies- coffee, soaps, bookmarks, the gloves (I know I‘m weird but they will be much loved here!), and OMG the little Longclaw!!

Thanks so much Ashley!

Took me a loooong time to finish this book. A so-so read. Although I enjoyed the book but I'm glad it's over!

✔ Atmospheric writing
✔ Weird and intriguing plot

❌ Monotonous storytelling
❌ Confusing and frustrating ending

Rating: 3.5🌟

Mar. 1: Currently Reading

I am reading Area X, because Annihilation is out in theatres here and I want to read it before I see it.

I am also reading Cat's Eye. It was my book club book for February, so I need to catch up!!

Man. The audiobook narrator sounds so much like Katey Sagal. I speed most my books up to 1.25 or more but doing that made it sound exactly like her to the point of distraction. (Loving the book though)!

Loki is really into Jeff VanderMeer's Area X trilogy, apparently. He keeps joining me when I'm trying to read it, but he does have excellent taste in books, so I guess it makes sense. Am now attempting to use him as a book rest...

I started the third book this morning. I really dig how different each of them are, in pretty much every way, and how this one is weaving in people from the first two and hopping around in time. I definitely recommend them.

As a side note, we have a big couch. These two could have (and give me and my scrunched legs) so much more room. I guess I should feel loved, but mostly I feel a cramp beginning. #dogsoflitsy

1️⃣ All of them! I really love the Christmas season.
2️⃣ None. Specifically told people not to get me books since I have too many to get through this year already sitting on my shelf.
3️⃣ A bunch of comics, the Southern Reach trilogy, and Wuthering Heights (again)
4️⃣ Yep, my brother is getting a novel and my sister is getting a cookbook.

GypsyKat I‘m with you on number one, but I could probably write a book about all the Christmas traditions that I love! 😊🎄 7y

Phenomenal trilogy from Jeff Vandermeer! The first book, Annihilation, is coming soon as a movie, the newest, full length trailer has dropped and it looks pretty faithful.

This book was creepy AF and I sure hope the movie does it justice!

This is a trilogy unlike any other. Hypnotic writing, surreal scenery, mistrust, memory loss, evolution, violence, head spinning mystery, shady business, intense family relations, compelling story - all this adds up to an incredible series of books. Can't wait to reread these, and for the Annihilation film adaptation next year.

I've been blessed with above average scaredy-cat tendencies so if you're someone who handles creepiness well, ignore me when I say : THIS IS A TERRIFYING TRILOGY. It's well written and imaginative as hell, but also chilling.
