Good Wives
Good Wives | Louisa May Alcott
Little Women is, to this day, one of the most beloved novels in the English language. But few of its fans realize that it was originally published complete with its sequel, 1869's Good Wives, in one volume. This wonderful book picks up the story of sisters Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy three years later, as they've passed through childhood and begin to face the complications of adult life. The further adventures of the March women-as well as their friend Laurie-will delight and enthrall readers who've only known their tale as ending with Little Women.LOUISA MAY ALCOTT (1832-1888), one of the most well-known American novelists of the 19th century, was born on November 29, 1832 to transcendentalist educator Amos Bronson Alcott and his wife, Abigail May Alcott. She was the second of four sisters (like Jo, her literary corollary), and grew up in a family that encouraged and sympathized with her abolitionist and feminist leanings. As a child she received instruction from noted literary figures such as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, and Nathaniel Hawthorne, all family friends. In addition to the Little Women series, which included four novels, she wrote 28 other works, three under the pen name A.M Barnard. Though Alcott had chronic health problems in her later years, most likely attributed to an autoimmune disease, she continued to write until her death at 55 in 1888.

Not as good as Little Women, but still a great book! I'm impressed how Alcott was so ahead of her time!

odeofrhythm 😍 yes she was. I read some of her quotes and it gave me sneak peek of her thoughts. Which says so much about our emotions and independent woman. 4y
pilardib @irhythm_ YES! I read a little bit about her life and it made my reading experience a lot more meaningful 4y

I used to think I couldn't let you go, but I'm learning to feel that I don't lose you, that you'll be more to me than ever, and death can't part us, though it seems to.

I meant to post this days ago but things have been kinda crazy. Over the weekend my parents took a trip to Boston and the stopped to tour Orchard House, the place where Louisa May Alcott lived and wrote. Knowing what a fan I am, they brought me home these two beautiful books. ❤️

I jump around in my reading a lot. Today, even though I‘ve finished nothing else I‘ve started, I‘m reading this. I had no idea it even existed until someone mentioned in a Litsy post — and I‘d read Little Men and Jo‘s Boys and all the others.

batsy Part of the confusion for me is also that most editions of Little Women incorporate Good Wives, I think. And I just found out fairly recently that I thought I'd read Little Women but it was only the abridged children's version 🙈 6y
KathyWheeler @batsy I wonder then if I‘ve actually read it as part of when I read Little Women because something I know happened has not yet happened in this book. My first reading of it was the abridged children‘s version you mentioned, so I possibly could have known about it from reading that? I‘m so confused, and it‘s been so long that I have no idea if I‘ve read this or not. (edited) 6y
batsy I know what you mean! In my case I'd read a standalone edition of Good Wives after reading the abridged LW, and haven't read the other two. So I told myself that 2019 will be my Little Women/Wives/Men/Boys year so that I can finally say that I've read them all 😂 6y
KathyWheeler @batsy AND be positive that you‘ve read them too instead of confused.😄 6y

Rummaging through my teenage bookcase at my mum's. #titlewithgood #aprilbookshowers @RealLifeReading

DeborahSmall My teen Hardy books are the same Q9 editions ? 8y
Oryx @DeborahSmall I was just thinking when I posted this, I'm sure these were only £1, but couldn't quite remember. Explains why I have nine of them. Purchased at Easons. 8y
DeborahSmall Haha yes mine too, I have a couple I bought in Menzies in Glasgow but as I moved here when I was 17 most of these are from Easons too. Hardy a favourite author yet I don't have any 'nice' editions of his books. I must start collecting some but because I physically read these ones I don't think I could take them off my shelves 💕 hope you're having a good trip home❤️ 8y

Oryx @DeborahSmall Thanks, I'm having a nice trip, mostly involving food so far. 8y
DeborahSmall @Oryx funny you say that all my trips home to Glasgow revolve around food! The chippy is different so I get maybe a black pudding or smoked sausage supper with pickles then the next night it's a curry from my favourite Chinese and I can never leave without at least 2 different Indian restaurants... 8y
