Excerpt: ... the negro pianist, came to town. He gave a concert at the Opera House on Monday night, and he and his manager spent Saturday and Sunday at our comfortable hotel. Mrs. pg 207 Harling had known d'Arnault for years. She told Antonia she had better go to see Tiny that Saturday evening, as there would certainly be music at the Boys' Home. Saturday night after supper I ran downtown to the hotel and slipped quietly into the parlor. The chairs and sofas were already occupied, and the air smelled pleasantly of cigar smoke. The parlor had once been two rooms, and the floor was sway-backed where the partition had been cut away. The wind from without made waves in the long carpet. A coal stove glowed at either end of the room, and the grand piano in the middle stood open. There was an atmosphere of unusual freedom about the house that night, for Mrs. Gardener had gone to Omaha for a week. Johnnie had been having drinks with the guests until he was rather absent-minded. It was Mrs. Gardener who ran the business and looked after everything. Her husband stood at the desk and welcomed incoming travelers. He was a popular fellow, but no manager. Mrs. Gardener was admittedly the best-dressed woman in Black Hawk, drove the best horse, and had a smart trap and a little white-and-gold sleigh. She seemed indifferent to her pg 208 possessions, was not half so solicitous about them as her friends were. She was tall, dark, severe, with something Indian-like in the rigid immobility of her face. Her manner was cold, and she talked little. Guests felt that they were receiving, not conferring, a favor when they stayed at her house. Even the smartest traveling men were flattered when Mrs. Gardener stopped to chat with them for a moment. The patrons of the hotel were divided into two classes; those who had seen Mrs. Gardener's diamonds, and those who had not. When I stole into the parlor Anson Kirkpatrick, Marshall Field's man, was at the piano, playing airs from a..."

I love reading classics and this one was so good. Reminded me a bit of when I read Little House books when I was younger. This title drew me in and I was well entertained. #bookspin @thearomaofbooks

Kimberlone I never made the connection, but that‘s an apt comparison - a more adult, realistic version of little house on the prairie 8mo

If you want to escape present time, then pick up this book.

It was a pure pleasure to read. Willa Cather's writing is so beautiful, especially when she describes her surroundings.

It's a tale about immigration, multi-faceted, set in a harsh environment, but it's also a friendship story, a story about neighbors helping each other out. You'll witness the difficulties faced by the immigrants in the late 1800s, but also how resilient they were.

The final book in Cather‘s Plains trilogy, this book tells the story of orphan Jim Burden and Ántonia Shimerda, who are each brought as children to be pioneers in Nebraska towards the end of the 19th century. It was a hard but memorable life, but left lasting impressions upon friends Jim and Antonia. Ive read O Pioneer, still need to read Song of the Lark

Started reading the physical book, but I felt I didn‘t have time, so I switched to audio. I really enjoyed this classic. Set in Nebraska, Cather makes you want to see the beautiful sunsets & fields. Loved the characters, esp the relationship between Ántonia & Jim. Only frustrating thing on audio is the narrator went back & forth for a bit in his pronunciation of Ántonia. A classic worth reading. My #doublespin book for July. @TheAromaofBooks

Growing up in Nebraska means reading My Antonia at least once in school. It‘s been probably 20+ years since then so I thought I‘d give it a listen. I‘m still not a fan of the main character, Jim. He‘s very self-centered and unable to see the world through anybody else‘s eyes until the end when he finally grows up.
That said, it is a beautifully written book and I am proud to be from the state that inspired Willa Cather.

Love to read Willa Cather. Rereading this was like revisiting an old friend and discovering that my friend was so much more than I remembered her to be. Antonia showed strength and resilience surviving and finally, inevitably thriving the harsh measure the newly settled prairie commanded. A powerful story.

I enjoyed my first reading of this classic book. Can‘t believe it took me this long to read it! While the titular character was romanticized by our protagonist, Jim Burden, this didn‘t distract from the very real trials of settlers in early America. 4/5⭐️

Jim‘s memories of Antonia‘s family‘s experiences as new immigrants to Nebraska feels particularly relevant today. Antonia has complexity to her story and character as she makes a life in the states. Cather shows both the welcome and the suspicion with which the immigrants could be viewed as well as Antonia‘s family‘s adjustment to a new culture. Found it quite moving and was a hit in my family book club.

This was my second read, and I fell more in love... mostly. #audiobook #dw2020reads

Pros: The farm life and small town life routines will appeal to Little House fans. Many passages about the plains landscape touch my heart and bring up memories. As I get older, I sympathize with more and more characters.

Con: Part 2, Chapter 7! Slight spoiler as that chapter's all romanticized racism. Feel free to skip it as it doesn't affect anything crucial.

effani That racist chapter really took me by surprise and soured me on the whole book when I reread it recently. Your advice to skip it is wise! 5y

10 years ago, I was embarking on a year-long reading project to mark the 100th anniversary of my employer, the Rochester (NY) Public Library. I read 100 books - 1 book from each year the library was in operation. I read some amazing books and some duds. The best and most beautiful was My Antonia by Willa Cather. Here is what I wrote about it - https://itsallaboutthebook.org/2011/03/04/100-years-100-books-6-1918/

There was a basic harmony between Ántonia and her mistress. They had strong, independent natures, both of them. They knew what they liked, and were not always trying to imitate other people. They loved children and animals and music, and rough play and digging in the earth. They liked to prepare rich, hearty food and to see people eat it; to make up soft white beds and to see youngsters asleep in them.👇🏽

📷: Bantam classic cover of My Ántonia

Tanisha_A They ridiculed conceited people and were quick to help unfortunate ones. Deep down in each of them there was a kind of hearty joviality, a relish of life, not over-delicate, but very invigorating. 5y

I think Cather reminds us to break from this myth of subservient rural wives, and admire the variation of female strength, independence and vitality. She also uses that prose of hers to create something of a childhood Garden of Eden. It‘s not a simple as you might think. Currey @Graywacke @Lcsmcat @batsy I have started the new year by finishing My Antonia! Oh how I have missed Catherbuddyread. I loved Cather‘s take on the robust Antonia thriving though “battered”. I found the narrator Jim to be not straining to remember a nostalgic Eden but looking back at key moments of transition: red grass to corn, his dancing shoes to adulthood, the moment when Antonia decides she must be herself at all costs. Happy New Year 3y
Lcsmcat @Currey Happy New Year to you! It‘s hard to compare anyone to Cather. Her prose is so amazing! 3y

My Ántonia starts out strong with such great descriptions of pioneer #Nebraska that is becomes appealing and beautiful. (I‘ve been to Nebraska and found it to be neither of those things.) Then it simply becomes vignettes in the life of Jim Burden. The writing style didn‘t work for me, but I‘ve intended to read this book for years, so I‘m glad I finally did.

This is the part of My Ántonia that I remember the most strongly. I didn‘t realize it was so early in the book. #catherbuddyread @Graywacke

Graywacke Curious. I‘ll start closer to the discussion date. 5y
Graywacke Ok, now I understand. 5y
Lcsmcat @Graywacke It‘s not a scene easily forgotten, is it? 5y
Graywacke @Lcsmcat she just kind of leaves us to dwell on all the grisly details she didn‘t tell but obviously happened. Yeah...it‘s not. 5y

Due to extraordinary luck Serial Reader was noticed by Salon writer Mary Elizabeth Williams, who gave me the opportunity to ramble about the app and why I created it (hint: it revolves around My Antonia and some crying). Check out her excellent article if you're interested: https://www.salon.com/2019/06/02/my-phone-helped-me-fall-in-love-with-books-agai...

And if not, at least be sure to read the excellent My Antonia by Willa Cather!

Caterina Great interview, thanks for sharing! 😊 I've used and loved SerialReader for a few years now, and I've always been impressed with how many works by women and people of color you find in public domain. I love discovering books on your app and reading classics I've always meant to read. ❤️ (PS - I happen to be reading My Antonia right now!!) 6y
SerialReader @Caterina Thanks for the kind words! Hope you enjoy My Antonia 😊 6y
BarbaraBB I am a @SerialReader adept as well. I hope this interview will give you more fame! Great app! 6y

"As I looked about me I felt that the grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the colour of winestains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first washed up. And there was so much motion in it; the whole country seemed, somehow, to be running."

When I think of wheat, I think of the prairies where I grew up in Winnipeg and in Wichita, which led me to thinking of Willa Cather. I‘ve been wanting to read my Antonia for a long time now. Maybe this will be the year. I‘ve put it off after disliking o‘pioneers in middle school. #readinggrudge #timbittunes #wheatkings

Cinfhen I definitely get the wheat/prairie connection 😉😊 6y
Blaire @Cinfhen now thinking about wheat I‘m wanting to reread the little house on the prairie books. I loved those! 6y
Tanisha_A I want to read this one too! 6y

Cathythoughts I loved this book. ♥️👍🏻 6y
readinginthedark You read O! Pioneers in middle school? I don't know if I would have liked it at that age. It seems like a book that one can understand so much better as an adult. 🤔 I enjoyed this one when I read it in high school, though! 6y
Blaire @readinginthedark I may have to go back to it. We read it in 7th grade. I just remember being bored by it at the time. 6y
readinginthedark Yeah, I could see that. Cather's books are pretty subtle, I think, all about the land and slowly building character relationships. They'd be hard to read at that age. 6y

SIGH. This had everything I liked about O Pioneers and everything I hated about The Song of the Lark. I really enjoyed the overall story and the depiction of the complexities of country life and of a time gone by. It was difficult to read past the racism and misogyny at times though.

readinginthedark 🤔 Did you feel that Cather or the characters were being racist and misogynistic? I haven't read this in such a long time but only remember period-appropriate feelings in this realm, so I was just curious. 6y
elizabethlk @readinginthedark honestly both. I actually used it as an example in an article recently so I have some relevant quotes. A black pianist's voice is described as having "the docile note of subservience in it." His physical description includes "almost no head at all; nothing behind the ears but folds of neck under close-clipped wool. He would have been repulsive if his face had not been so kindly and happy." 6y
readinginthedark Good point. I guess I need to read this book again. I don't remember how she refers to other characters for comparison. 6y

elizabethlk @readinginthedark honestly a lot of it made me pretty uncomfortable. Sami are referred to as laplanders, even by someone who is half Sami (it is considered derogatory where the Sami are from but not in the US) and she says she thought the Sami had fat and ugly faces "like the Chinese." There are also moments where she does stuff like describe people as "still like an indian" and such. Honestly I thought Song of the Lark was way worse for it. 6y
elizabethlk It just turned out to be aggressively not for me. Really liked O Pioneers! though. 6y
readinginthedark Understandable. Sometimes certain classics are hard to stomach for this reason--outdated social ideas/language/etc. 😕 It's unfortunate. 6y

Trying to blast through the end of this so I can make 2019 a Willa Cather free year.
