Sixty-eight pages in, and my TBR is expanding at a rate of one title every 23 pages. If this keeps up, I'll have 20 new titles on my TBR by the time I finish. I think I kind of knew that reading this one would be like drilling a hole in the bottom of my boat, but here I am anyway.

Cosmos_Moon_River My TBR grows exponentially compared to my reading. 4y
ImperfectCJ @Cosmos_Moon I almost had a handle on my TBR for a little while but people just keep writing books I want to read, darn them. 4y

I‘m sad to say I‘m putting Middlegame on pause because I can‘t listen to the narrator any more. I have the physical copy and will return to it at some point.

Hanging out at the library with my kids, wondering if there's always so much coughing and I'm just noticing it now, I found this book. I'm new to Nick Hornby and maybe I should start with his fiction, but his approach in these collected columns seems very similar to how I view my reading. Besides, how can I visit the library without messing up my reading plan by picking up another book?

BookNAround I love this collection. And I actually like his non-fiction as a whole better than his fiction. 5y
Hooked_on_books This is a wonderful book! And yes, there‘s always this much coughing. 😉 5y
ImperfectCJ @BookNAround Good to hear! What little I've read of this so far I like. Hopefully it doesn't add to my TBR too much, though. 5y
ImperfectCJ @Hooked_on_books Thank you! That's what I thought (about the coughing). Except for that the library is very quiet today. 5y

I‘ve read (and loved) a few books of Nick Hornby‘s columns on reading. These were responsible for several obscure items on my Kindle, I.e. #AusterityBritain. This book collects all his columns into one volume. The quote above illustrates the bibliophile‘s dilemma—the impossibility of reading all the good books published in the last 6 months, much less from the more distant past. All I can do is fill my shelves with good books.

Liz_M I LOVE his Believer columns! I have the individual books rather than the 10-year volume. 😍 5y
arubabookwoman @Liz_M I read a few of his other books, probably from the library since they're not on my shelf, so I was glad to find this complete collection. I love his snark, and his ability to make the most unpromising books sound intriguing. 5y

With each passing year, and with each whimsical purchase, our libraries become more and more able to articulate who we are, whether we read the books or not.

Books are the fullest expression of self. We are our books, the ones we struggle with, the ones we put down and the ones we can‘t, the ones we still hope to read, and, of course, the ones we love. That, more than anything: the ones we love.

ApplesandSpindles I LOVE his Believer column/books about read I g 6y

...when it‘s going badly, when books don‘t stick or take, when your mood and the mood of the book are fighting like cats...

Like his ground rules. Don‘t point out how much money he spends on books, many of which he‘ll never read. Some of his friends are writers, so he‘ll write about their books. Don‘t tell him he‘s showing off. Sometimes things are slow and he can read more than usual. Lots of reading is just lots of reading, not bragging.

The Nick Hornby books based on his column in the Believer "Stuff I've Been Reading" is what made me start documenting not only books I've read, but also books I've purchased. I keep a monthly list. Since I believe that buying a book and reading a book are two separate pleasures I try not to stress over the number purchased vs number read!

LeahBergen True. They ARE separate pleasures. 😄 6y

#marchintoreading day 6 - Happy Reads

The collected writings of Nick Hornby for The Believer; got more than a few reading recommendations from this book over the years, and needless to say it makes for a great read itself. The focus on only good books served me as a kind of precursor to @Liberty 's #AlltheBooks podcast.

blurb
LauraJ

Here we go. It's going to take me months to finish this because Hornby will mention hundreds of books that I will want to read. It will start with our mutual love of Dickens. I'll be so distracted by the need to read Dickens that I won't want to touch the dozens of unread books sitting in my apt. And so on... #blameitonLitsy or more specifically, @LectricSheep who sent me Tub. Little does she know that she's created a monster! #marchintoreading

I decided to mimic Nick Hornby's columns and track books bought and read. My resolution is to read more books from the library and read the ones I purchase. Although it looks like I bought several books, I actually spent less than $30. Trevor Noah's book was the best of the month. I was disappointed in my library books. This was probably the first month I read a BOTM selection the same month I bought it. Progess!!

Woo-hoo! This is my first litsy-inspired book purchase. It's a collection of essays on what Nick Hornby's been reading and it spans a decade. I read the essay from September 2003 this afternoon... SO GOOD! It's like listening to a friend talk about their book finds, and what they've liked about what they've been reading, and about what they think about reading in general. Thank you Litsy people for an excellent recommendation :)
