The Infatuations
The Infatuations | Javier Marķas
A New York Times Book Review Notable Book, NPR Great Reads, and Onion A.V. Club Best Book of 2013Each day before work Marķa Dolz stops at the same café. There she finds herself drawn to a couple who is also there every morning. Observing their seemingly perfect life helps her escape the listlessness of her own. But when the man is brutally murdered and Marķa approaches the widow to offer her condolences, what began as mere observation turns into an increasingly complicated entanglement. Invited into the widow's home, she meets--and falls in love with--a man who sheds disturbing new light on the crime. As Marķa recounts this story, we are given a murder mystery brilliantly encased in a metaphysical enquiry, a novel that grapples with questions of love and death, chance and coincidence, and above all, with the slippery essence of the truth and how it is told. This ebook edition includes a reading group guide.

This is a book with very little plot and lots of stream of consciousness. A woman is intrigued by a couple she doesn‘t know but meets every day in a breakfast place in Madrid. One day the husband is killed and she can‘t stop herself from talking to the woman.
Not much more happens yet it is an engaging read with some interesting thoughts.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Donā€˜t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

JamieArc I‘m intrigued by every book you post for this because they all have gorgeous covers. I suspect you do the same thing as me - HAVE to have a book because the cover is šŸ˜ but then never get to reading it for a while šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ 10mo
TheEllieMo @JamieArc yup, that does sound like me! I love a good cover! Sprayed edges are also a weakness 10mo

Mehso-so

Between this and ā€œVia Merulanaā€ I‘m starting to think paragraphs are not valued on the continent. This is a pretty much as described - a kind of mediation on murder, love, and what we know and can‘t know about other people. There is a lot of ruminating going on, so if you‘re like me and just want a plot, you‘re probably missing the point.

Loving right now. Weird how the main character, Maria Dolz, imagines the imaginings of the other characters. It‘s very meta. We see the supporting characters as imagined by The author who imagines what Maria imagines the other characters might have imagined...fun!

I really enjoyed the characters and the theme of this story. The only downside was the Norwegian translation - it often felt too direct, which made the language awkward and annoying. I should probably force myself to read MarĆas in Spanish next time.
