Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark
Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark: Disney After Dark | Ridley Pearson
In this fantastical thriller, five young teens tapped as models for theme park "guides" find themselves pitted against Disney villains and witches that threaten both the future of Walt Disney World and the stability of the world outside its walls. Using a cutting-edge technology called DHI--which stands for both Disney Host Interactive and Daylight Hologram Imaging--Finn Whitman, an Orlando teen, and four other kids are transformed into hologram projections that guide guests through the park. The new technology turns out, however, to have unexpected effects that are both thrilling and scary. Includes a preview chapter from Kingdom Keepers II - Disney at Dawn!

To be completely honest I wasn‘t that impressed with this one. I was really looking forward to going back to the world of the keepers, but now that we‘re back I‘m kind of underwhelmed. The book completely ignores things from the other books and had a hard time getting connected with the new kids while splitting the book with the original keepers.

Who hasn‘t wondered what it might be like to wander around Disney after hours? For Disney fans & young readers alike this is a fun MG story, an adventure where magic comes to life & the battle between good & evil rages across the park when the tourists are gone. One thing is for sure, you‘ll never view the It‘s a Small World ride the same way again after reading it. A quick, fun read filled with friendship, adventure & no small amount of magic.

LibrarianRyan I loved this trilogy (when it was still a trilogy) 4y

Being a huge Disney fan, I would definitely recommend this book and the series. Also when you finish this series, there‘s a whole follow up series too. It‘s about 5 teens that become 3D holographic tour guides for the Disney theme park, but at the same time are selected for saving Disney as we know it. Don‘t wanna give too much away, just read it.

A fun and light fantasy romp through the Disney World Parks. Great for anyone familiar with the Florida parks. Some of the material definitely feels 15 years old. Some needlessly problematic sections as well. But overall, a fun read after recently visiting the parks.

This book has been on my TBR list for a long time. I am so glad that I finally did, it is so good. In fact it is so good, I am going to start rereading it tomorrow with one of my students. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a Disney fan or just anyone who loves a good spooky mystery.

Kingdom Keepers by Ridley Pearson would be a great choice for and independent read or literature circle book. This science fiction digs into the depth of Walt Disney World where five find themselves against Disney Villains and witches. Especially with living in Central Florida, I especially would use this book as many kids could be able to relate to the attraction they‘ve been to.

BRaulerson This book could be used to tie in main idea concepts using standard https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/5767.The UDL Guideline clarifying vocabulary and symbols. With this book being a science fiction, it may have more technical terms that would need to be discussed prior to, or even during the story. The ESOL Strategy would be teach technical vocabulary using key concepts. #UCFLAE3414F19 (edited) 5y
kgarzon Students would definitely be amazed to be reading a novel that takes place somewhere they know or even visited before, letting them actively visualize the story progressing. And if they haven't, then you could easily provide references like videos or a park map to provide context! 5y
DrSpalding Using the Florida Department of education website is a wise choice. This is fun science fiction to introduce central Florida students to. 5y

The Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark is a SF novel written by Ridley Pearson. I would use this novel for a LC in a fifth grade classroom because there is so much in the book students can talk about and learn off of each other. This book is about five children who go to sleep and become holograms in the Disney parks and have to defend them from the Disney villains trying to take over.

katiehamlin I have nothing but amazing things to say about this book. I‘ve read the series three times through and I think every student should be exposed to it! #UCFLAE3414F19

The EL strategy I would use with this novel is 10, teach think, pair and share strategies in cooperative groups. This is good because I would use this novel as a LC, so the students are already collaborating and pairing up and working together to share their ideas with each other.
5y
katiehamlin The UDL principle I would use for this book is 1.3, offer alternatives for visual information. I think this is good for this novel because it doesn‘t have photos or anything in it, so many students may want to have an audio recording of it they can listen to while they read along with it. 5y
katiehamlin Here is a link to a resource I would definitely use with this book in my classroom. https://wildgeeseguides.blogspot.com/2010/01/kingdom-keepers.html This link includes many great pre-reading activities, discussion questions, and projects for every book in the series that would be great to incorporate into a classroom! 5y
Camrynm I loved your author study in class and I am very interested in this series now! Your resource looks great too! 5y
DrSpalding You shared such passion for this series! I will not forget that. I believe students can make such personal connections to this series even though it is science fiction. The setting of Disney World is one that we can all connect to here in Central Florida. 5y

I read and loved this book by the black cover alone. I never bothered reading the dust jacket, and it did NOT have the subtitle Disney after dark in the second printing of book 1 in hardcover the subtitle was added in black under the original title. No idea why the changed the cover. It was a successful book. And I personally hated the covers of book 2 and three. The covers got changed again at book 4. Originally this was 👇🏻

LibrarianRyan A trilogy but so many people were annoyed at the big baddie that three more books were added. And now there is even a spin off series. If you are a fan of Disney land you have to read these books. . #BBRC

mom2bugnbee The copy my kids had is completely different! The top half was the eyes of a villain (Maleficent? Ursula?) & the bottom was drawings of the kids. We don't have the book anymore, or I'd post a picture. 5y
LibrarianRyan @mom2bugnbee yep. That is the cover change when they brought out books 4-6. It was just supposed to be a trilogy. 5y

I‘m a Disney freak. So I knew I was gonna be reading these series. It took me a while to get into and get through this one! It started out SLOW. I put the book down a few times, and don‘t come back to it for months. But finally one day I decided I was gonna stick to it a finally finish it. And I did. About 3/4 way through it snagged me, and I ended up liking it! But not love! I will however continue the series, bc like I said I‘m a Disney freak!

LibrarianRyan Book 3 sucks. I was like Seriously. I haven't read the rest of the series. But I was reading them as they were coming out before it was ever titled Disney After Dark. It was just supposed to be three books. I loved one and two. I have plans to finish the series, i'm just not in a hurry. 5y
Lots_O_Books I agree! If I come across the books for free or extremely cheap I‘ll pick them up, but not in a rush to read them 5y

This SF novel by Ridley Pearson is a great book for LC or IR for upper elementary or middle school students. The story is about five kids who are turned into Disney host holograms and are the key to saving Disney World. I think students would really enjoy this book, especially because it takes place right here in Orlando! https://www.scribd.com/mobile/document/215408915/Kingdom-Keepers-Teacher-s-Guide

EricaG The link provides some different ideas of how to use this book in the classroom. One of them is to hold a mock trial. After reading, students would think of the “crimes” the villains committed. Then, they would hold the trial with the students acting as the villains, judge, prosecution, defense, and the jury. They would need to research judicial procedures first, and then plan their strategies. This would meet UDL 6.2 and EL 48. #UCFLAE3414F17 (edited) 7y
DrSpalding What a fantastic way to teach about the judicial system while using a quality piece of literature. Wonderful resource. 7y

Disney fans will really enjoy this & only need an idea how Disney World is set up (I‘ve only been to Disneyland and could keep track). There were times I was annoyed by the adults but that seems normal in YA/Middle Grade books. The narrator, Gary Littman, did a decent job though there were a couple of female voices that bugged me pretty good. Probably would recommend physically reading this one instead of audio. I will be continuing this series

These are another set of series I #DNF, and I can not decide if I want to. Kingdom keepers was only supposed to have three books but the big baddie in the last book was so lame for a series that I love and hand to kids all the time. I think the beautiful creatures movie ruined the book for me. Never read the rest of the series. #readjAnuary

Christy2318 I really liked the first two Beautiful Creatures books. I did not like the plot turn book 3 took and never read the last book. The movie was terrible. 8y
Bookzombie I only read Beautiful Creatures and haven't picked up the rest. I haven't even seen the movie. Just not motivated to read more of them. 8y
booksandcats13 When I read the first Beautiful Creatures book I thought it was pretty boring. People's love of it got me to give the next book a chance (and the library had the audiobook available immediately). I listened to the next one instead of reading it like the first. The narrator made a huge difference. I gave the second book four stars (when the first book only got 1.5). This was almost certainly because of the excellent audio performance. 8y

LibrarianRyan @Ruri_kaichou the book was awesome. But you Malificent is in the first book but she is not the big baddie I did not think was all that big and bad. But I do love the books. 8y

Read this one with my ten year old because it was on her Battle of the Books list. Eh... it's fun if you've been to the parks and can picture the places they mention. Overly descriptive parts bog down the flow of the story. Some characters are not well developed (like, they don't even seem necessary to the story).

I love Disney World.
I love YA.
I love original stories.
But this book was just not good. The plot was asinine and the characters were stereotypes taken straight from the TV show Recess. The only reason this doesn't get rated worse is because of the Disney trivia inside. The writing is just awful.

I read the Kingdom Keepers before it had the Disney After Dark subtitle. I picked it up because of the author and the cover. (Original cover pictures). Malificient isn't the "big villain" but then again the big villain (revealed in #3 was a let down). #septohotochallenge #favoritevillan

🌟🌟🌟🌟4/5. I loved it. I was captivated by the plot. When this first came out I wished I could run around Disney all night. This book brought the villains to life, it developed my imagination. Would read again if given the chance.😊
