The Serial Killer Files
The Serial Killer Files: The Who, What, Where, How, and Why of the World's Most Terrifying Murderers | Harold Schechter
THE DEFINITIVE DOSSIER ON HISTORYS MOST HEINOUS! Hollywoods make-believe maniacs like Jason, Freddy, and Hannibal Lecter cant hold a candle to real life monsters like John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, and scores of others who have terrorized, tortured, and terminated their way across civilization throughout the ages. Now, from the much-acclaimed author of Deviant, Deranged, and Depraved, comes the ultimate resource on the serial killer phenomenon. Rigorously researched and packed with the most terrifying, up-to-date information, this innovative and highly compelling compendium covers every aspect of multiple murderersfrom psychology to cinema, fetishism to fan clubs, trophies to trading cards. Discover: WHO THEY ARE: Those featured include Ed Gein, the homicidal mamas boy who inspired fictions most famous Psycho, Norman Bates; Angelo Buono and Kenneth Bianchi, sex-crazed killer cousins better known as the Hillside Stranglers; and the Beanes, a fifteenth-century cave-dwelling clan with an insatiable appetite for human flesh HOW THEY KILL: They shoot, stab, and strangle. Butcher, bludgeon, and burn. Drown, dismember, and devour . . . and other methods of massacre too many and monstrous to mention here. WHY THEY DO IT: For pleasure and for profit. For celebrity and for companionship. For the devil and for dinner. For the thrill of it, for the hell of it, and because such men are monsters, who live . . . beyond the frontiers of madness. PLUS: in-depth case studies, classic killers nicknames, definitions of every kind of deviance and derangement, and much, much more. For more than one hundred profiles of lethal loners and killer couples, Bluebeards and black widows, cannibals and copycats this is an indispensable, spine-tingling, eye-popping investigation into the dark hearts and mad minds of that twisted breed of human whose crimes are the most frightening . . . and fascinating.

I always like Harold Schechter‘s books. This was in-depth and covers a lot of topics, including information about famous killers and some I wasn‘t familiar with. This had been unread on my shelf for years. Glad I finally got around to reading it. Some of the details and illustrations are pretty gruesome.

The narrator is a bit dry and says the most disturbing things with a flat tone. The book was EXTREMELY repetitive saying the same things over and over and going over the same cases time and again.

I thought well written. Hadn't heard of some of these killers before.

#2018Book121
Like Schechter's other books, this one was carefully researched and full of fascinating information. However, like Schechter's other books, he spends way more time than necessary on Ed Gein and Albert Fish.

Either Schechter has a total lack of self-awareness or that website is tasteless indeed. I won't be checking it out (if it even still exists). I can't recommend this book for #truecrime fans; it has a ton of information, but it's poorly organized and very repetitive... then there are the illustrations he chose to include. The Kindle edition is also badly formatted. I may reference the list of serial killer books at the end again, however.

This book primarily consists of short accounts of the lives and deeds of various serial killers. I just keep thinking the MFM ladies did this one, and they did it better. #murderino #truecrime

I already know that Harold Schechter's true-crime books are overly sensationalistic, gross, and occasionally offensive. But they're well-researched and fun, so I forgive them. However, I'm not sure how seriously to take this book when he spells a legal term wrong while commenting on a killer's misunderstanding of it. 😳🙄

I found this book so captivating! I couldn't put it down. In fact, I read it twice actually. I loved how it delved into the why, and included cultural information, like why people are fascinated with serial killers. I picked another good book for #nonfictionchallenge17.

(These were the only pictures I had of the book, taken from when I first started reading it.)

So, I just spent a good fifteen minutes crying over books; my book collection more specifically. My fiancee and I are moving across the country soon and I'm doing a lot of packing and cleaning today so there is less to do later. I started packing up my books. That smallish box and these books on my nightstand are all that remains of my previous vast collection. I feel like...Like some part of me has died. I used to have thousands of books. :-(

BookishMarginalia You will again. In a new place. With new books. Eventually. 8y
WarpedSweetness @BookishMarginalia Thanks. :-) I've been trying to replace what I lost and had to throw away. It just sucks that I had to lose so much. 8y
BookishMarginalia Big hug 💜 8y
LittlePixels My sympathies. I had to do the same thing last year, albeit not as drastic, paring my multi-thousand book library down to just 600+. It hurt! The number is slowly creeping upwards again. 😉😊 8y
WarpedSweetness @LittlePixels Ugh! Just trying to part with books is bad enough as it is. I wish that was the reason for my little library. Unfortunately when we left our last apartment, I had to throw away books because of a bed infestation. :-/ It was awful. @BookishMarginalia *hugs back* Thanks! 8y

Books came in the mail today! They were supposed to be Valentine's Day present from my fiancee...But I opened them today. Lol I was going to start on The Serial Killer Files as my book for the #nonfictionchallenge17, but now I am not sure if I want to start that or one of my new books.

For anyone interested in true crime and serial killers, this book gives amazing insight and details. I especially liked how he delved into the history of heinous crimes (werewolves and vampires anyone?). True crime is probably my favorite non-fiction genre and this book ranks up there as one of the best in my opinion. #Reccomendsday
