#SundayFunday @ozma.of.oz
Although my first choices would actually be somewhere in Middle-earth or, apprehensively, in Gormenghast (that my phone's autocomplete has learnt "Gormenghast" gives me immense satisfaction!), as these are more obvious locations, I'm going to pick Green Knowe, as it should be a better known children's book, which is atmospherically ghostly and would meet my Gothic inclinations ???

BookmarkTavern That sounds lovely! Thanks for answering! 💚 2y
batsy Oooh nice! I'd love to stay there, too, but will feel much better having a bunch of Littens for company 😆 2y
Bookwomble @batsy I'm sure they'd find space for us all. A nice cosy drawing room with an open fire, and tea and crumpets with lashings of butter 😌 2y

There is not much better than a childrens book with a big old country house, a ghostly past that creeps into the present and a lonely child that likes to explore. Thank you to @batsy and @LeahBergen for putting this book on my radar a couple of years ago! It will be a comfort read to keep on my shelves and reread when I want to relive a snowy ghostly Christmas. 💕

batsy So glad you enjoyed it! It's a lovely read and I feel like I might have to revisit it sometime this year :) 3y
LeahBergen I‘m so glad you liked it as much as @batsy and I did! 🥰🥰 I keep meaning to read more of the series but you know how that goes… 🙄 3y
Tamra Sounds fun! 3y
Chrissyreadit I agree with @LeahBergen and @batsy this is just a perfect book to read, especially around Christmas (to me) 3y

LeahBergen @batsy I remember you thoroughly enjoyed it! 😘 5y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Aww, aren‘t you sweet? 😘😘 I figured I‘d better update the photo as the previous one was a few years old. At the rate I‘m aging now, I should be updating every few months. 😂😂 5y
Literary_Siren You‘re welcome! I enjoyed the movie as well as the book. But the movie has Dame Maggie Smith in it so you know it‘s good! 5y
LeahBergen @Literary_Siren Ooo, I love her! 👏🏻 5y
TrishB Love the new pic ❤️ 5y
LeahBergen @TrishB Well, aren‘t you nice? 😄 Thanks! If I did a strictly up-to-date photo from today it would actually show all my undyed grey hairs. 😆😆 5y

Faves of 2019 #adventrecommends Dec 17

An atmospheric, magical tale that totally won me over with its setting, writing, characters. A perfect children's book. It's been on my TBR forever so cheers to @TheBookHippie for including this in the #ChildrensClassicRead2019 🙂

Literary_Siren They made this a movie! From Time to Time staring Dame Maggie Smith! That‘s how I discovered the book. The movie might still be on Netflix. 5y
batsy @Literary_Siren I will definitely look for this on our Netflix! Can't go wrong with Maggie Smith ❤️ 5y
LeahBergen On my shelf and needing to be bumped up the TBR! 5y

On his first night at Green Knowe, Tolly is rowed through the flooded gardens by lamplight after having travelled through a flooded England, drenched by rain. I love that this English landscape hinges between reality and fantasy; there's no solid division between the real and imagination, which is to me is a crucial element of the best children's books 💚

saresmoore Mmm, great point about children‘s lit! If the book was good enough, just reading it would blur my sense of reality in everyday life for a while. I miss that. 6y
Chrissyreadit I love this book! I listened to it several times with my children on long car rides (many years ago) and it remains a favorite ❤️❤️❤️❤️ 6y
RohitSawant So wonderfully described! Love your point about the blend of the real and imaginary. 6y

batsy @saresmoore I know, right? I miss that kind of immersion reading that totally transports me until I forget who I am. 6y
batsy @Chrissyreadit That's lovely! I only read it recently because of a readalong hosted by @TheBookHippie and I regret not having read it as a kid! But better late than never 😁 6y
batsy @rohit-sawant ❤️❤️ 6y
TheBookHippie @batsy ❤️💚 This was simply wonderful. 6y
LeahBergen I need to pull this off my shelf for a read soon. 👍🏻 6y
saresmoore I mean, I did recapture a bit of that when I binge watched the entire series of Gossip Girl a few years ago. 😅 6y
batsy @LeahBergen It's so lovely ❤️ 6y
batsy @saresmoore Well, just between us, I also recaptured that feeling while watching Pretty Little Liars 😂😭 6y

Pickpick

The children of green knows by Lucy Maria Boston is a modern fantasy book that was published in 2002. This is a thrilling story about a haunted manor that is found in an overgrown garden in England. There are three main characters Toby, alexander, and Linnet who have been dead for centuries. They welcome Tilly to Green Knowe. The haunted manor hides many stories and the master of the house is a great grandmother Oldknow.

I loved this book as a child. Full of ghosts, but not scary; atmospheric but not grim. I reread it recently and it holds up magnificently. I was delighted to discover that the author, Lucy M. Boston, was born in my home town, though sadly little has been made of it locally.

#CreepyKids (in today's book mail).

This is one of those children's series that I somehow missed out on as a kid. Was anyone a fan?

Aleida Great cover. Never read it. 7y

rubyslippersreads I've never read any of these, but they went on my TBR list after I saw the film. 7y
batsy They've been on the TBR for far too long. That's a lovely edition. 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled New to me too, but right in my wheelhouse! 7y
ValerieAndBooks 🙋I read the Green Knowe books from the library when I was a kid— at least the ones they had!! I can even remember which section I got them from. I also remember them as being very atmospheric-creepy rather than scary-creepy if you know what I mean. I should try to find and read again! 7y
merelybookish I always mix this up with The Wolves of Willoughby Chase so I think I've read it, but I really haven't. 7y

I recently did that thing where I was so convinced I‘d love a new-to-me series that I bought all the books before even starting the first one. I have done this many more times than I‘d like to admit, to be honest. 🙄

And I actually bought mismatching covers on purpose because I really loved the Faber Classics 2-in-1 bind-up (and it was cheaper than 2 separate books!) Here‘s hoping I actually do like these #Green Knowe books! #30daysofreadathon

rubyslippersreads These have been on my TBR list for ages. 😊 7y
BucklingBookshelves @rubyslippersreads I hope you get to them someday too! I had honestly never even heard of them... then promptly got a whole set 😊 7y

Finished this book but still not sure whether I liked it. Some of the parts were great but others couldn't hold my attention and I had to fight to keep going. Might try the second one but unsure at this point. Anyone know if it gets better?
